Ciudadanía democrática: ética, política y religión. XIX Conferencias Aranguren

2011

This article is comprised of two parts, bound together by the concept of democratic citizenship. The first part attempts to design the lines of deliberative democracy as the most appropriate model to embody the actual substance of democracy. That is why it presents the sense of deliberative democracy, its traits, its advantages compared with other models, the conditions for its start-up, its limits and the specific type of deliberative democracy that would be more adequate, and which receives the name of «communicative democracy»; all of this by way of dialogues with its main representatives. The second part addresses the specific questions of the <i…

Localizing Global Solidarity: Humanitarian Aid in Lesvos

2021

The so-called “refugee crisis” in Lesvos, Greece provides a poignant example of situated, local suffering that has called for the coordination of global resources to provide relief. Some of the first to respond were local and international Citizen Initiatives for Global Solidarity (CIGS). While a growing role for CIGS has been interpreted as a call for more global involvement, arguments for the increased localization of relief efforts suggest the need for aid agents to maintain a reflexive awareness of the potential for an influx of outside assistance to disempower those most affected. We argue that barriers to implementing the localization of humanitarian aid can be better understood by po…

Nowa polityka. Wprowadzenie do ewolucyjności

2017

This article introduces a vision of the new politics that emerges from my recent book Tractatus Politico‑Philosophicus. The Tractatus discusses a number of topics. To name just a few, these are: politics, human nature, the state, freedom, solidarity, democracy, civilization, family and marriage, power, international relations, war and peace. Also, it introduces new words, such as sophocracy, ennobled democracy; nativeculturalism (an alternative to multiculturalism); or parentsexuality, a privileged form of sexuality. It addresses many issues that concern today’s political thinkers. The main objective of my work is to demonstrate the necessity of, and provide a guide for, the redirection of …

Tradycyjny instytucjonalizm i jego znaczenie dla nauk politycznych

2015

The paper presents academic achievements of traditional institutionalism, the first scientific approach in political science, which was developed since the second part of the 19th century in USA, Great Britain, Germany and France. The author argues that this orientation had a creative influence on the progress of the discipline, however this impact is not appreciated by contemporary studies in the field of political science and political theory where limited understanding of the old institutionalism is promoted. The revision of this state of affairs has shown that, apart from the analysis of formal structures and institutions of state power, the traditionalists also have studied political p…

Przemoc jako konstytutywny element teorii polityczności. Carl Schmitt a tzw. kwestia żydowska

2016

Article deals with the relationship between Carl Schmitt’’s political theory and political theology, which inherently works with the violence assumption, and the so called jewish question. Author shows the way the enemy of the political is gradually constructed on the basis of textual and doctrinal analysis. The core of Schmitt’s enemy construction depends on the refusal of the philosophical tradition, which assume that all man are equal as far as they are participating in one common nature or are in actual or potential possesion of reason. This refusal is the basis on which the criticism of normativism, for Schmitt in the inter-war period represented especially by jewish thinkers such as H…

The Temptation of Populism in David Cameron’s Leadership Style

2015

DOI: 10.1057/9781137439246\₁0; International audience; It may seem unusual to associate the widely-used concept of populism with the leadership of the British Prime Minister, David Cameron. Populism is, however, open to various interpretations and definitions and so easy to manipulate that it could apply to almost anything. Moreover, populism has so often been used to describe movements and groups critical of representative democracy, generating a ‘malaise’ (Mény and Surel, 2002: 21) or a ‘threat’ to democracy (Mudde and Kaltwasser, 2012), that it is has become difficult to conceive it as a new political practice in the hands of democratic governments. To accept what would appear to be a co…

Political Philosophy and Anthropological Pessimism: Notes on Arthur Schopenhauer’s Political Philosophy

2014

2016

The purpose of this article is to analyse Hobbes’s understanding of democracy. The first part of the article analyses the role of democracy in the social contract. It aims to show how there exists a democratic element at the beginning of the process of social contract, in which the multitude is transformed into a people. However, after the first social contract is made, Hobbes aims to reduce the power of the people by leading the process of social contract on to another level, on which the power of the people is assigned to a representative of the sovereign power, for example a monarch. The second part of the article aims to explain the practical reasons, provided by Hobbes in different par…

Putting global poverty in context : a philosophical essay on power, justice and economy

2009

Teppo Eskelinen tarkastelee väitöskirjatyössään äärimmäiseen köyhyyteen sisältyviä eettisiä ongelmia yhteiskuntafilosofian näkökulmasta. Usein oletetaan, että maailman hyväosaisilla on moraalisia velvollisuuksia poistaa äärimmäistä köyhyyttä. Näitä velvollisuuksia tulee kuitenkin Eskelisen mukaan tutkia etiikan lisäksi yhteiskuntafilosofian kontekstista eli oikeudenmukaisuuden ja vallan ongelmina.- Alallamme on käyty paljon keskustelua siitä, minkälaisia velvollisuuksia hyväosaisilla on poistaa äärimmäistä köyhyyttä. Nämä velvollisuudet on perinteisesti nähty velvollisuuksina auttaa. On kuitenkin esitetty, ovatko talousjärjestelmän voittajien velvollisuudet enemmänkin negatiivisia eli velvo…
