In the vast reform program sketched by the chevalier de Jaucourt in the Encyclopédie for the modernization of justice, one point is particularly close to his heart: humanizing the rules of war. Drawing from the philosophies of Grotius and Montesquieu, his articles devoted to the question of a just war (CONQUEST, DAMAGE, DESERTER, ENEMY, PRISONNER OF WAR, RETALIATION, WAR, etc.) argue for the subordination of the political to moral reason and work towards the advent of international humanitarian law.

In this article the adequacy of the sociological paradigm in voluntary associ ations' research is investigated by comparing it with its nval, the incor poration or system integration paradigm (types 1 and 2) and with two approaches that are their combinations: multi-dimensional theones of disper sion and cross-cutting of interests (type 3) and multi-dimensional theories of incorporation and system integration of interests (type 4). Frame building and frame sponsorship in the 2011 Spanish election: the practices of polarised pluralism

ABSTRACTThis study assesses if the well-established polarised pluralism of the Spanish news media system translated into frame sponsorship during the 2011 Spanish General Election. After reviewing the historical and cultural influences that shaped the 2011 Spanish electoral campaign, I conduct a qualitative discourse analysis of 96 news releases issued by the 2 main Spanish political parties, the Socialist Party and the People’s Party, to identify their sponsored diagnostic and prognostic frames. “Another Munich We Just Cannot Afford”: Historical Metonymy In Politics

The appeasement of Hitler and the Munich Agreement is a rhetorical comparison used commonly in international relations to defend politico-military action. On the basis of conceptual history and rhetorics, we examine cases of political speech in this paradigm. Firstly, we discuss time and conceptualize experience into first and second order experiences. Secondly, the roles of metaphor, metonymy and analogy in relation to thought and action are examined. We then contextualise Munich 1938, and present three cases demonstrating the political usage of this metonymy since WWII. These range from the Suez Crises to the Gulf War and on-going War on Terror.
