Not So Much Societal: The Catholic Church in Poland as a Veto Player

2021

George Tsebelis distinguished two forms of veto players’ actions: institutional and partisan. In a democracy, the Church is not able to play either role because it is not an element of the state’s institutional structure. This was the source for Simon Fink’s proposal to look at the Church as a societal veto player (VP). The case of Poland shows, however, that such an approach becomes inadequate in numerous situations. The Church’s influence on political parties, and particularly the state’s institutions, may be exerted outside society. Performed on the basis of the existing literature and political debates conducted since 1989, the analysis of the social and political reality of Poland all…

Krinka Vidaković-Petrov y Kalmi Baruh: una perspectiva biográfica intersubjetiva

2019

Krinka Vidakovic-Petrov has devoted much of her extensive academic career to studying the Hispanist Kalmi Baruh. In fact, the researcher considers him the «father» of the Spanish studies in Yugoslavia. The present article intends to analyze her personal connection with the Bosnian-Sephardic intellectual through the biographical method, including the attendance to one of her academic presentations, three meetings that took place in Belgrade and a personal document written by her. The aim of the article, despite the limitations of this research model, is to highlight the relevance of the work carried out by Vidakovic-Petrov and to analyze the cognitive fundamentals that justify her interest i…

Promoting children’s participation: the role of teachers in preschool and primary school learning sessions

2010

The aim of this study is to provide insights into the social construction of participation in joint activities in Finnish preschool and primary school classrooms. The article deals with two issues: How do teachers promote participation in a preschool classroom as compared with a primary school classroom? What similarities and differences are found? It also considers the question of how the similarities contribute to the continuity from preschool to primary school in terms of participation. Based on observation data insights are provided into the interactions between teachers and children by using extracts from teacher‐led learning sessions. The teachers used a diversity of strategies to pro…

A Post-contentious Turning Point for the Contentious French? Crisis Without Protest in France

2018

International audience; This chapter shows that the ‘contentious French’ may not be that contentious anymore. The economic crisis provides a unique chance to argue that a post-contentious turning point is emerging in spite of a long-standing tradition of protesting. Yet the chapter suggests that this post-contentious turning point is not bringing about acquiescence but opens space for new forms of political participation, especially in connection with resources acquired through employment and educational track. In this case, we find a more extensive engagement in online activism and non-institutional forms of political participation, that is, the two forms of political participation that ar…

Older people’s participation in political organizations: The role of generativity and its impact on well-being

2017

Aging population has increased a global concern to keep seniors active and healthy. Civic participation, in particular, has been highlighted for its social and community benefits and its impact on elders’ health and well-being. To date, however, most studies have explored volunteering; other types of civic activities, such as political participation, are largely overlooked. This study analyzes the relationship between older people’s active involvement in political organizations, generativity, and hedonic and eudaimonic well-being. We selected two samples of Spanish older people: a sample of elders actively involved in political organizations (n = 97) and a comparison group (n = 85). Measure…

Identifying profiles of complementary and alternative medicine believers and/or users

2020

The present study focuses on the identification of profiles of CAM believers and/or users. Using data from the Spanish CIS Barometer (2018) and a sample of 2486 Spaniards, a hierarchical and non-hierarchical cluster analysis and discriminant analysis have been performed. Profiles of people with a high level of belief in CAM and/or CAM users were identified. Results reflect relationships between personal factors (healthy lifestyle and status, political and religious ideology) and satisfaction with conventional medicine with the belief/use of CAM. Personal factors and satisfaction are not related to the level of belief in CAM. We have tried to fulfil some gaps detected in the literature: much…
