Tactical Web Use in Bumpy Times—A Comparison of Conservative Parties’ Digital Presence

2021

Modern-day party politics happen on two grounds: the offline sphere and the online sphere. It is the primary understanding of this chapter that both spheres complement each other. We therefore focus our contribution on governing parties and help to close this gap between online and offline communication and organisation by asking: How do conservative, governing parties deploy social media over a number of successful election campaigns? We explore whether there are tactical patterns or tendencies of media presence between different party channels during campaign and normal times with a longitudinal approach. Second, we introduce a multi-modal comparative research design and deliver theoretic…

When Methodology Interferes With Substance

2005

For campaigners, and also attendant researchers, the advent of the Internet has challenged established ways of doing their respective campaign business. Practitioners, used to running local and media campaigns, can nowadays also resort to elements of web campaigning, while electoral researchers, used to running election studies based on personal or telephone interviews, can now employ online surveys to do their business. However, e-campaigning and online polling suffer from severe deficiencies. Based on online and offline surveys conducted in the run-up to the 2002 German election, we show two things. First, online surveys yield biased results; second, e-campaigning reaches only a tiny fra…

Navigating high-choice European political information environments : a comparative analysis of news user profiles and political knowledge

2021

The transition from low- to high-choice media environments has had far-reaching implications for citizens’ media use and its relationship with political knowledge. However, there is still a lack of comparative research on how citizens combine the usage of different media and how that is related to political knowledge. To fill this void, we use a unique cross-national survey about the online and offline media use habits of more than 28,000 individuals in 17 European countries. Our aim is to (i) profile different types of news consumers and (ii) understand how each user profile is linked to political knowledge acquisition. Our results show that five user profiles – news minimalists, social m…

Evolution of the opinion of newspapers on the Catalan conflict from 2010 to 2017

2020

Benedykt XVI o terroryzmie

2019

BENEDICT XVI ON TERRORISMIn Benedict XVI’s reflection on terrorist acts an unequivocally negative attitude towards them appears, regardless of the motives behind the armed actions. In this rather difficult problem for his contemporaries, he studied the premises responsible for the escalation of aggression and violence in various parts of the world, as well as their consequences for individual states and societies. The sources of acts of terror in the current reality were found in ideologies of extreme religious, as well as religious or even anti-religious backgrounds, of which ardent supporters try to impose by force or propaganda their dictatorship on certain social communities or office h…

Vers une historiographie des politiques des traductions en Belgique durant la période française

2014

The language policy of the French Revolution is known today especially for the imposition of the national language and the oppression of dialects and regional languages in France. This pilot study focuses on a less-known phenomenon of that period: translation policy. From 1790 on, several decrees stipulated the translation of national laws and decrees into the regional languages of France and some languages of other European countries. We will illustrate this translation policy focusing on translations of political and administrative texts from French into Flemish in Belgium (which was annexed by the French Republic in 1795 and remained French until the end of the Napoleonic era). We will n…

The meaning of critic and political responsibility in Iris M. Young

2013

The meaning of critic and political responsibility in Iris Marion Young This article aims to show how the conception of «critic» in Iris Marion Young is to articu- late the critical theory of society with the phenomenological analysis. This is essential to consider that injustice is based on «oppression» and defend the «political responsibility» to fight injustices. This articulation between critical theory and phenomenological analysis can be seen in her descriptions of the tensions between the structural and the immediate ways to achieve justice. If oppression is the fundamental form of injustice, political respon- sibility is the key to understanding her proposal to seek it as a way to m…

Generation Z and Organizational Listening on Social Media

2020

Young people are avid users of social media and have appeared as a powerful force for social change, as shown by the ranks of those who have joined Greta Thunberg in the global climate movement. In addition to challenging political institutions and governments, young people today are also holding the corporate world accountable. To respond to young people’s expectations, brands, and organizations have turned to social media to interact and build relationships with them. However, critics have lamented that these attempts often fail and that young people’s trust in institutions, brands, and organizations continues to decline. This article asks how young people perceive organizational listenin…

Institutional resources as a source of trade union power in Southern Europe

2017

Abstract Institutional resources are one of four sources of power available to trade unions (Gumbrell –McCormick and Hyman, 2013). Literature has tended to pay more attention to associational and organizational power and to emphasize the indispensable but problematic character of institutional resources. This paper examines the role of institutional resources in three Southern European countries (Greece, Portugal and Spain) which share common characteristic including post dictatorship political settlements; recent economic crises; external intervention. Comparative analysis draws out the distinctive role and character of institutional resources in Spanish industrial relation. It shows how t…

Gerd Callesen, Socialist Internationals: A Bibliography of Publications of the Social-Democratic and Socialist Internationals, 1914–2000. Bonn and Ge…

2004

This is a very useful bibliographical tool produced by the efforts of the International Association of Labour History Institutions (IALHI). This association comprises more than one hundred archives, libraries and research centers all over the world, though the vast majority are located in Europe, and not all of them have the same importance, reflecting the geographical and political unevenness of socialism's history. This particular volume aims to list all the publications of the social-democratic internationals after 1914, i.e. from the time of the political split due to the support for World War I by most social-democratic parties. This means that the left-wing, beginning with the Kientha…
