Measuring Social Solidarity. Some Research Notes
2012
Abstract There is an increasing public, political and research interest in social solidarity. Even though the concept has a long history and is embedded in solid approaches, there is not much literature concerned with its measurement. The paper falls into the area of the methodological studies of social solidarity and it deals with construct validation. The objective of this paper is to test for convergent validity and nomological validity of two sets of items aiming to measure social solidarity attitudes and acts. The main method employed is confirmatory factor analysis.
The Five-Pillar Model of Parties’ Migration into the Digital
2021
Scholars have examined how political parties cope with web-based technologies for about 20 years. This body of literature on party digitalisation covers many different aspects of parties’ migration into the digital, yet usually, the term digitalisation is used equally for all kinds of web-related changes in party behaviour and routines. This contribution distinguishes five key dimensions (pillars) of parties’ migration into the digital, which resonate with classic approaches of party research. These pillars cover (A) membership, (B) leaders and candidates, (C) policy program, (D) public image, and (E) resources. Each pillar consists of three bricks addressing sub-dimensions. This enables a …
Talking Politics: The Influence of Historical and Cultural Transformations on Polish Political Rhetoric
2021
This qualitative study aims to explore the characteristics of Polish political rhetoric since 2004 when Poland’s political system stabilized after the transformation from a communist to a democratic state. It analyzes a selection of celebratory presidential speeches, PMs’ inaugurals and parliamentary debates, and populist party propagandas targeted at domestic audiences. It looks at content, but mainly at style and rhetorical devices to identify reflections of Poland’s turbulent history (resistance rhetoric), economic instability (crisis rhetoric), national heritage (traditionalism and religiosity), and recent social changes (mediatization). One significant dimension investigated here is th…
Global Powers and the International Currencies: What Does the Last Years Suggest for the Future?
2018
Starting from the literature that identifies different factors which determine whether a currency plays a global role, we propose an analysis of international status of major currencies using the following criteria: the demographic, economic, commercial, and financial size and importance of the currency issuer, the currency issuer’s financial market, and the history of using currency. We consider that the international use of a currency is mainly defined by the issuer’s place in the global economy, including its share of world trade and the size of its economy and financial market. The US dollar’s reference position was less influenced by the introduction of the euro, but nowadays it may be…
Pierre Bourdieu’s Theory of Politics: An Interpretation
2018
Bourdieu’s theory of politics can be divided into three components: a general analysis of the social aspects of the political (le politique), a more specific analysis of politics (la politique), and his political practices. The author analyzes Bourdieu’s conception of social domination through topics such as political judgment and delegation and then his theory of the political field. In Bourdieu’s structuralist framework, the struggle for domination takes place between the dominant and the dominated. The second component restricts political action to a more specific social location, the political field. For Bourdieu, the division of society into social classes forms the explanatory basis f…

Transferir tecnologia para outros espaços escolares
2015
The technology transfer model offers us a perspective to analyze how schools receive incorporate technological activities and their equipment. Particularly, we analyze the innovations generated by these processes at the organizational level of schools as recipients of technology. The analyzed data belong to an investigation which is currently being performed in 12 regions on the “School 2.0 program”. At this stage we handle references of descriptive statistics and some of the interviews and classroom observations from the participating centers on the “smart school”. From the first analysis, it can be said that the school system follows a pattern transfer including: high dependence on the po…

What’s Wrong with the Diffusion of Innovation Theory?
2001
This paper examines the usefulness of the diffusion of innovation research in developing theoretical accounts of the adoption of complex and networked IT solutions. We contrast six conjectures underlying DOI research with field data obtained from the study of the diffusion of EDI. Our analysis shows that DOI based analyses miss some important facets in the diffusion of complex technologies. We suggest that complex IT solutions should be understood as socially constructed and learning intensive artifacts, which can be adopted for varying reasons within volatile diffusion arenas. Therefore DOI researchers should carefully recognize the complex, networked, and learning intensive features of te…
