Citizens' Political Discourses on Climate Change and Vaccines
2022
The main objective of this chapter is to compare the political discourses of Polish and Spanish citizens on science issues such as vaccines and climate change expressed by the citizens participating in the public consultations held in València (Spain) and Łódź (Poland) during the autumn of 2019. As the general elections were held very close to the public consultations in both countries, it was expected that there would be references to election campaigns, political parties, or public policymaking during the debates. Then, those statements explicitly expressing political views on climate change and vaccines were selected from the debate transcripts before applying five specific frames and va…

What Drives Selective Exposure to Political Information in Spain?
2022
Communication research underlines two types of selective exposure to the media: one guided by ideological-partisan affiliations and one guided by interest in politics. This work will compare both motivations in the consumption of political information through three media types (digital press, television, and radio) by Spanish citizens during the 2019 November General Election. Through multinomial logistic regressions applied to a representative post-electoral survey, results show that ideological-partisan orientations are the most important variables governing selective exposure, especially for the digital press and the radio. Besides confirming ideological selective exposure, the data high…

Deliberative Rhetoric of Parliamentary Debate
2018
The chapter deals with the parliamentary moves of debating. Parliamentarisation can be connected to practice of debate pro et contra. Parliamentary rhetoric is no merely eloquence or oratory in the classical sense, but parliamentary politics has modified the deliberative genre of rhetoric to a debate between multiple agents in line with the parliamentary procedure. Parliamentary politics is understood as the activity of all members participating in the debate and rhetoric then considers the styles of politicking as moves in the debate, in which the act of debating enjoys a priority over the final decisions. The chapter presents how different faces of rhetoric—genres, maxims, topoi, figures …
