Desertification and Water Scarcity as a Security Challenge in the Mediterranean
2009
There is a new perception of a global dimension: environmental security. The protection of our fixed and shared environment is gradually coming to people’s attention as an obligatory requirement for equitable development, in order to prevent disasters related to environmental security and to avoid conflicts. The Euro-Mediterranean Region is also immersed in this general trend partly as a consequence of more frequent severe environmental events, such as forest fires, floods and landslides, droughts, torrential rains, heat waves and water scarcity. The Southern and Eastern shores of the Mediterranean undergo even more harsh environmental impacts affecting the stability of the land, its capaci…
Comparative Analysis Between France and Italy
2016
In this chapter, the role of river contracts in European and national water policies has been analyzed, by observing the two paradigmatic contexts of France and Italy. The comparative analysis undertaken both with respect to the experiences of water management policies and river contracts, allows to more deeply assess the governance processes of water resources and understand their political, legal and socio economic scopes. In addition, the comparison of these two national contexts has highlighted the opportunities for actual integration between practices of urban and territorial planning, and water management policies. The analysis has been specifically focused on the respective normative…
Informing, engaging, mobilizing or interacting: Searching for a European model of web campaigning
2011
This study presents data from content analyses of the websites of all parties that stood in the 2009 European parliamentary elections in France, Germany, Great Britain and Poland. It cross-nationally examines the main functions of the websites, the adoption of Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 features, and the political and cultural factors that determine parties’ online communication. The findings show that while the main website function varies across countries, Web 1.0 is still the dominant mode of campaigning. Moreover, offline inequalities within and between nations determine differences in parties’ individual online strategies: specifically, major parties in states with long histories of democrac…
Rethinking Political Representation from the Perspective of Rhetorical Genres
2019
This article is a thought experiment. It constructs ideal types of political representation in the sense of Max Weber. Inspired by Quentin Skinner and others, the aim is to give a rhetorical turn to contemporary debates on representation. The core idea is to claim an ‘elective affinity’ (Wahlverwandschaft, as Weber says following Goethe) between forms of representation and rhetorical genres of their justification. The four ideal types of political representation are designated as plebiscitary, diplomatic, advocatory, and parliamentary, corresponding to the epideictic, negotiating, forensic, and deliberative genres of rhetoric as the respective ways to plausibly appeal to the audience. I dis…
Pres…
Party Positions on Differentiated European Integration in the Nordic Countries: Growing Together, Growing Apart?
2020
The Nordic countries constitute an interesting laboratory for the study of differentiated European Integration. Even though Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden share some historical, cultural, socio-economic and political characteristics, all those countries have ultimately opted for a different kind of relationship with the EU. Whereas Finland, a member of the Eurozone since its inception in 1999, has been considered to be part of the Union’s ‘inner core’ for quite some time, Iceland and Norway, in contrast, have opted to remain outside the EU albeit closely associated via the European Economic Area Agreement. The variation of relationships has also been reflected in Nordic parti…
Didáctica (lengua y literatura)
2017
Nuestro …
Unite against: A common threat invokes spontaneous decategorization between social categories
2019
Abstract A frequent rhetoric in the political arena calls members of larger groups like nations to lay aside all dividing differences and unite in face of a common threat. In the present research we sought to test whether such a unifying effect of external threat already manifests in such basic cognitive processes as automatic categorization even for such strong schisms as the ones between black and white Americans or Israeli Jews and Arabs. In Studies 1 & 2 (N = 183/144, USA), we established the decategorization effect in the context of black and white US Americans. In Study 3, we showed the effect again in a German lab for the gender category (N = 101). In Study 4 (N = 168, Israel), we tr…
The Development and Promotion of Controlled Designations of Origin (Appellations d’Origine Contrôlées) in Burgundy: The Recognition of Terroir Wines …
2019
From the end of the nineteenth century to the first half of the twentieth century, French, and especially Burgundian vineyards will undergo profound changes with a relatively important transformation of wine production and marketing standards. Indeed, in the nineteenth century, the wine merchants are dominating the wine production in Burgundy. They buy grapes, make wines, breed and sell all the wines put on the market. However, thanks to economic and political changes affecting the sector during the last third of the nineteenth century (phylloxera crisis, overproduction, fraud, Third Republic,..), a political, legal and commercial fight led by winegrowers trade unions begins. They stick to …
