I corpi del virus
2020
How to criticize without ever becoming a critic
2019
The chapter elucidates the disposition of the critical IR scholar by exploring the resonances between the political subject and the figure of the critic. While the critical disposition is often contrasted with proper politics as overly negative and devoid of constructive effects, I argue that political praxis and critical activity share a similar modus operandi in overcoming exclusions, overturning hierarchies and abolishing restrictions in a given world. The political subject is not a poet, artist or ‘world-maker’, but a pitiless critic of the worlds s/he finds itself in. Critical IR is therefore a political intervention into the world of the IR discipline that does not seek to consolidate…
Crowdfunding y Financiación de Partidos Políticos
2019
Crowdfunding is presented as a new private financial resource for parties of political parties by which citizens can participate economically in the structure of these organizations. This paper will set out some legal proposals that seek to adequately incorporate this new resource. First, we will approach the crowdfunding analysis in order to make it easier for the reader to understand this phenomenon. Secondly, it will analyze the current implementation of this tool by political parties at national and international level, pointing out some of the positive and negative aspects that can be derived from the use of this new resource. All this, with the main objective of analyzing the viabilit…
The Role of Professors in the Formation of Finnish Parliamentary Life: The Struggle between Two Conceptions of Parliament
2017
The Frankfurt Parliament (1848–49) was subsequently dismissively referred to as the “Professors’ Parliament” due to its heavy representation of scholars and the academic style of its lengthy discussions. Professors have played a prominent role in the deliberations and development of other European assemblies, too. This article examines the role of professors in the formation of Finnish parliamentary life. It moreover underlines the close relationship between the academia and national politics in late nineteenth-century Finland, starting from the European revolutions of 1848. The article highlights how politically active professors, together with the newspaper press, were crucial in transfe…
A comparison between three ideal types of parliamentary politics : representation, legislation and deliberation
2018
Representative, legislative and deliberative assemblies are commonly called parliaments. The three types of assemblies share many procedures and practices, and the Inter-Parliamentary Union includes all three types among its members. Nonetheless, as ideal types in the Weberian sense, the three kinds of political assemblies do differ in their modes of acting and thinking politically. This article is a thought experiment to sketch the three ideal types by working out a number of key aspects of their distinctive political features. The political action that characterizes representative assemblies is pre-parliamentary elections, legislative assemblies are judged by their post-parliamentary resu…
Deliberative Democracy, Active Citizenship and Critical Culture: From Aristotle’s Rhetoric to Contemporary Political Philosophy
2013
The aim of this paper is to defend an adequate reading of Aristotle´s deliberative rhetoric that allows us to understand practical rationalization as a process of interpretation of human actions. After the consideration of rhetoric as a general human ability that is indispensable for political coexistence, the impact of the Aristotelian rhetorical proposal is presented, not just as a defense of the importance of rhetoric in a democratic society, but also as a novel attempt to understand what it means to speak of practical rationality.

Ciudadanía democrática: ética, política y religión. XIX Conferencias Aranguren
2011
This article is comprised of two parts, bound together by the concept of democratic citizenship. The first part attempts to design the lines of deliberative democracy as the most appropriate model to embody the actual substance of democracy. That is why it presents the sense of deliberative democracy, its traits, its advantages compared with other models, the conditions for its start-up, its limits and the specific type of deliberative democracy that would be more adequate, and which receives the name of «communicative democracy»; all of this by way of dialogues with its main representatives. The second part addresses the specific questions of the <i…
