Ammattitaiteilijuus ja kirjailijana olemisen ehdot muunkielisten kirjailijoiden näkökulmasta

2020

In this article I describe the results of a questionnaire survey done on non-dominant language writers in Finland, and reflect this on the criteria by which a professional artist has been traditionally defined in Finland. The background data consists of reports and studies on artists' social standing conducted by Arts Promotion Center Finland, Cupore and the Finnish Writers' Union.
There were 31 responses to the study from non-dominant language residents of Finland who identify themselves as writers. Among these writers, the most often mentioned factor to define a professional writer were published works. Published works have also been central when a professional artist / writer has b…

Accounting, microfoundations, hybridization and longitudinal conflict in a Finnish health care organization

2021

PurposeThis article analyzes the cognitive microfoundations, conflicting institutional logics and professional hybridization in a case characterized by conflict.Design/methodology/approachIn contrast to the majority of earlier studies focusing on special health care, the study was conducted in a Finnish basic health care organization. The empirical data include 36 interviews, accounting reports, budgets, newspaper articles and meeting notes collected 2013–2018.FindingsThe use of accounting techniques in this case did not offer professionals sufficient support under conditions of conflict. The authors suggest that this perceived lack of support intensified the negative emotions toward accoun…

Piesza Opolska Pielgrzymka na Jasną Górę

2018

Started on 17th August 1977 the Opole Walking Pilgrimage to Jasna Góra was a result of many centuries oftradition of dévotion to Our Lady ofCzęstochowa in the Opole region. After érection ofthe apostolic administration ofthe Opole Silesia in 1945 and Opole diocese 27 years later preparing the whole-diocese pilgrimage was impossible because oftwo factors: political context ofthe PPL and reluctance of bishop Franciszek Jop to provoke the government unfavourable towards the Church. Not before 1976, with bishop Jop being deadly sick, his auxiliary bishop - Wacław Wycisk let fr. Edmund Cisak (priest in Grodziec) to prepare the pilgrimage. On the starting day ofthe First Opole Walking Pilgrimage …

Foucault and the birth of psychopolitics : Towards a genealogy of crisis governance

2020

The article contributes to the genealogy of current tendencies in crisis governance by reconstructing Michel Foucault’s analysis of the application of the notion of crisis in 19th-century psychiatry. This analysis complements and corrects Reinhart Koselleck’s history that viewed crisis as originally a medical, judicial or theological concept that was transferred to the political domain in the 18th century. In contrast, Foucault highlights how the psychiatric application of the concept of crisis was itself political, conditioned by the disciplinary power of the psychiatrist. Unlike the ancient medical concept of crisis that emphasized the doctor’s judgement in observing the event of truth i…

A Historical Analysis of Media Practices and Technologies in Protest Movements : A Review of Crisis and Critique by Anne Kaun

2017

Dr. Anne Kaun’s book, Crisis and Critique: A Brief History of Media Participation in Times of Crisis (London: Zed Books, 2016, 131 pp., ISBN: 978-1-78360-736-5), is a concise but comprehensive analysis of the changing media practices and technologies in protest movements. The book overviews the topic within the context of major economic crises and scrutinises three richly detailed case studies in the United States: (a) the unemployed workers’ movement during the Great Depression in the 1930s, (b) the tenants’ rent strike movement of the early 1970s, and (c) the Occupy Wall Street movement following the Great Recession of 2008. Kaun begins her book with an introduction t…

At the Roots of Finnish Cultural Policy: Intellectuals, Nationalism, and the Arts

2007

In this article we argue that the role of intellectuals was essential (1) in the formation of Finnish cultural policy and (2) for the development of national cultural administration and public arts subsidy system in the country in the period leading up to World War II. The actions of the intellectuals can be considered as political choices in a contingent sociopolitical realm, and arts as an essential part of the signifying system. In Finland, intellectuals remained active in the intertwining areas between the state and civil society. We highlight the impact of their actions especially through a study of archival materials obtained from the State Arts Boards. At these Boards, the intellectu…

The Janus Face of Political Experience

2018

Arendt’s concept of experience can contribute in important ways to the contemporary debates in political and feminist theory. However, while the notion is ubiquitous in Arendt’s thinking we lack an understanding of experience as a concept, as opposed to the impact of Arendt’s personal experiences on her thought. Drawing from her notes for “Political Experiences in the Twentieth Century,” the article seeks to enrich our understanding of the Janus-faced character of political experience. It emphasizes the importance of vicariousness, and argues that experience should be understood as a process of suffering, enduring, and re-experiencing events beyond our conscious control. The article further…

John Edgar Wideman, lecteur-archiviste de Frantz Fanon

2017

This article intends to read Fanon, a Novel, written in 2008 by John Edgar Wideman, as an attempt to decolonize the archive, more specifically the Fanonian archive. Rather than trying to exhume the legacy of the Martiniquan thinker, the novel proposes to set Fanon’s thought in motion, allowing it to unfold before the reader’s eyes. Thus summoned up, the archive assumes an eminently political role. No longer an origin in a teleological narrative, it can only be apprehended by a text that deliberately practices generic blurring and intermingling as a mode of writing. In Fanon, a Novel, the intersection between fiction and the archive serves as a productive space where national and colonial gr…

La oposición senatorial en tiempos de Augusto: el caso de Antistio Labeón = The Senatorial Opposition in the Time of Augustus: The Case of Antistius …

2020
