This article focuses on the use of the concept of friendship in the treaties of friendship concluded by the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union in the twentieth century. The range of reference of friendship and its usage by these two political rivals display a number of commonalities, which indicate a key role this concept plays in maintaining the existing order of interstate relations. In the aftermath of the First World War, constitutions of European states were widely democratized and parliamentarized, and similar turns were expected in international relations as a consequence of the creation of the League of Nations. This comparative analysis of Swedish and Finnish parliamentary debates on the League membership focusing on conceptualizations of the national versus international demonstrates how democratization and internationalization merged discursively. The article deals with the question if the cleavage concept of Lipset and Rokkan can be applied to the rise of National Socialism at the polls and as a mass-integration party. Voter fluctuations within and between political camps are analysed by means of ecological regression analysis as well as the social composition of the NSDAP electorate. Furthermore the social fabric of NSDAP party members between 1925 and 1933 is decribed in terms of the cleavage concept.

This study contributes to the literature on informal governance by examining politics of informal agenda-setting in the European Commission. As a ‘hard case’, the paper examines how the European Commission exceeds limited legal Treaty provisions in foreign and security policy (CFSP). This system, where the Commission has come to play a more prominent role than stipulated in the treaties, is interpreted as a normalization of CFSP governance. This chapter explores a historical distant reading strategy of British Parliamentary discourse. It uses historical collocation analyses of ‘internationalism’ and the ‘international’ in the British Hansard Corpus and a selection of Commons and Lords debates concerning British membership in international organisations as it relates to the League of Nations, United Nations, Council of Europe, EEC and Brexit. The aftermath of resilience in the global world.

Just as there is an aftermath of trauma, there is reason to think of an aftermath of resilience, different from the resilience capacities developed after a trauma. The aftermath of resilience reflects the ability to activate resilient memory in response to traumatic memory in order to rebuild oneself. This is a major challenge for the global mental health of our fragile societies. The challenge is significant for France, Europe and the world. Beyond the overuse of the word resilience in scientific literature and the media, it contributes to the methodology, epistemology and politics of resilience.
