The role of the International Organization for Migration and the UNHCR in the EU and Italy: Still entrapped by a securitization approach to Mediterra…
2019
Mediterranean migration flows have been managed, so far, by revitalizing the traditional remits, such as border control, of the state. Recent years have seen the growth of nationalist parties, able to exploit migrant flows to expand their support. Rescue operations have also received widespread criticism from several other actors, instead others have expressed anxiety about the lack of concern, on the part of state representatives, for the humanitarian dimension of the phenomenon. The EU has not been able to act as a counterweight and has shown all the difficulties involved in enhancing solidarity and responsibility-sharing between member states. Moreover, there is a lack of mutual trust af…
Robert Nozick and Axel Honneth: An attempt to shed light on mental health service in Norway through two diametrical philosophers.
2020
This article aims at giving insight into Norwegian mental health service by exploring the ideologies of two diametrical philosophers, the American Robert Nozick (1938-2002) and the German Axel Honneth (1949-). Nozick proposes as an ideal a minimal state in which citizens have a "negative right" to the absence of interference and to follow their own interests without restriction from the state. On the other side, Axel Honneth claims that there is no freedom without state interference. In his view, governmental involvement is understood as a prerequisite for personal freedom. We may call this state an opposite of the minimal state; a maximal state. To get a better understanding of these oppos…
2017
Current military campaign against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria raises the question of the admissibility of the right to use force in self-defence against attacks by non-State actors in other States. International law in this area remains controversial and State practice ambiguous and inconsistent. This article analyses the legal basis invoked by States to justify their military operations against ISIL. Consent provided by the Iraqi government is lacking in the case of Syria, leaving only self-defence as feasible legal basis. The broad support for the use of force against Islamic State sides with conflicting views regarding the need of territorial State consent to the use of force on …
Exploiting for Care: Trafficking and Abuse in Domestic Work in Italy
2017
ABSTRACTCare workers are now an essential part of reality for many Italian families. Yet, despite advancements in regulating domestic work, abuses are widespread. This article explores why exploitation in domestic work is rarely viewed as such and addressed with policies concerning trafficking and exploitation. I look at the way in which the care issue has been addressed by the Italian state and at the peculiar relationship between employers and domestic workers. Furthermore, I focus on the gaps in policies on trafficking and exploitation. I argue that the interplay of these factors results in the “normalization” of exploitation in domestic work.

"Moskiewski pachołek" versus "polski patriota". Niepubliczne opinie o generale Wojciechu Jaruzelskim z lat 1981-1982
2016
The Nation-State Relation in the Constitution of the Republic of Poland
2020

Evangelical Global Engagement and the American State after World War II
2017
The resurgence of American evangelicalism since the 1940s unfolded in conjunction with efforts by policymakers to instrumentalize religion for the assertion of empire. Missions and foreign aid are two key areas where these dynamics intersected. They show that evangelicals were both at home in the “American century” and deeply critical of global power. Rather than being a weakness, however, these tensions enabled the movement to become a crucial arbiter at a time when the country's new role was not yet firmly legitimized at home. In particular, evangelicalism helped reconcile isolationist, antistatist, and antimilitarist sentiments with hegemonic aspirations, the national security state, and…
A more targeted approach to foreign direct investment: the establishment of screening systems on national security grounds
2018
The process of liberalization of international trade and of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has constituted a broadly accepted trend during the last few decades and FDI inflows have expanded constantly since the end of the 1980’s. However, signs of a certain crisis of the positive and one-way attitude towards international trade and FDI exist nowadays. The increase in the flux of FDI coming from developing and emerging countries to developed economies, the sudden relevance of foreign sovereign investors, the changing environment for national security or the quest to protect technologies and sectors of the economy considered vital for the host country, its sovereignty and competitiveness are…
