Bioconcentration and metabolism of 3,4-dichloroaniline in different life stages of guppy and zebrafish

1993

Abstract Bioconcentration factors (BCF) and metabolism of 3,4-dichloroaniline in different life stages of guppy (Poecilia reticulata Peters ) and zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio Hamilton-Buchanan ) were investigated. The results prove that embryos of zebrafish, four-day-old yolk sac larvae, 17-day-old larvae and adult zebrafish are able to transform the chemical to 3,4-dichloroacetanilide. Bioconcentration factors in these life stages are between 30 and 42, exept yolk sac larvae showing a BCF of 86. 3,4-Dichloroacetanilide was also detected in extracts of newborn and adult guppies, but they are able to form an additional, yet unknown metabolite. The BCF varies from 34 in six-month-old guppies …

The effects of biomass co-gasification and co-firing on the development of combustion dynamics

2018

Abstract Effects of wheat straw co-firing with gas (propane flame) and co-gasification/co-combustion with wood pellets on the development of thermo-chemical conversion of biomass pellets and on heat energy production were experimentally studied and analyzed with the aim to improve the gasification/combustion characteristics and the applicability of wheat straw as an alternative energy source for cleaner heat energy production. The results suggest that the wheat straw co-firing with propane provides an enhanced thermal decomposition of pellets with more complete combustion of volatiles increasing thus the heat output at thermo-chemical conversion of wheat straw and the produced heat energy p…

Antimicrobial and antioxidant supramolecular ionic liquid gels from biopolymer mixtures

2023

In this work, we describe the preparation and characterization of supramolecular ionic liquid gels based on binary mixtures of biopolymers, comprising chitosan, chitin, cellulose and lignin. The gels were obtained in ionic liquids differing in the cation or the anion, with no need for a cross-linking agent or acid treatment. The materials obtained were characterized for the minimum gelation concentration, porosity, swelling and rheological properties, finding a prominent influence of the nature of the ionic liquid anion. Then, we investigated the ability of the gels to scavenge free radicals, finding that the gels exhibit a higher antioxidant ability than their individual components. Moreov…

Ecology and extent of freshwater browning - What we know and what should be studied next in the context of global change

2022

Water browning or brownification refers to increasing water color, often related to increasing dissolved organic matter (DOM) and carbon (DOC) content in freshwaters. Browning has been recognized as a significant physicochemical phenomenon altering boreal lakes, but our understanding of its ecological consequences in different freshwater habitats and regions is limited. Here, we review the consequences of browning on different freshwater habitats, food webs and aquatic-terrestrial habitat coupling. We examine global trends of browning and DOM/DOC, and the use of remote sensing as a tool to investigate browning from local to global scales. Studies have focused on lakes and rivers while seldo…

Association between Asthma Control and Exposure to Greenness and Other Outdoor and Indoor Environmental Factors: A Longitudinal Study on a Cohort of …

2022

Achieving and maintaining asthma control (AC) is the main goal of asthma management. Indoor and outdoor environmental factors may play an important role on AC. The aim of this longitudinal study was to evaluate the association between AC and exposure to greenness and other outdoor or indoor environmental factors in a cohort of asthmatic children. This study involved 179 asthmatic children (5–16 years). Parents were interviewed through a modified version of the SIDRIA questionnaire. AC was assessed at each visit. Exposure to greenness was measured using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). A logistic regression model was applied for assessing risk factors for uncontrolled…

Major ions and trace elements composition of rainwater around the two industrial areas of Milazzo and Priolo Gargallo (Sicily - Italy)

2023

This database shows the concentration of major ions and trace elements in rainwater from two polluted industrial areas of Sicily, Milazzo and Priolo Gargallo, collected from June 2018 to July 2019, through a network of 11 bulk collectors to sample bulk atmospheric deposition, for a total of 131 samples collected. Different sources, both natural and anthropogenic, for both major ions and trace elements have been recognised. This study also highlighted some critical issues with common methods of sampling and analysing atmospheric deposition. The analysis and comparison of two different aliquots, filtered and unfiltered rainwater, has shown that the filtration method removes from the sample a …

Metals distributions within black crusts sampled on the facade of an historical monument: The case study of the Cathedral of Monza (Milan, Italy)

2019

This research deals with the characterization of black crusts collected from Dome of Monza. Black crusts (BC) can be formed as a result of different chemical and physical reactions between the stone surface and environmental factors (such as gaseous pollutants, aerosol particulate matter and its specific chemical constituents-the carbonaceous fraction and the metals); therefore, they are considered as a passive sampler of pollutants. The specific focus of the current work is the study of the metals and their distribution within the samples. To characterize BC, several techniques were used such as: HRSEM-EDX, IC and LA-ICP/MS. This integrated approach allowed us to gain information about the…

Quantities, environmental footprints and beliefs associated with household food waste in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

2019

The objectives of this research were to identify the quantities and global warming, acidification and eutrophication potentials associated with household food waste in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In parallel, this study investigated perceptions related to food waste and using the quality function deployment for environment model, correlated reasons for discarding food waste and beliefs associated with food waste. Based on this study, it is estimated that around 2.8 kg of food waste is disposed of by the average household every week. Global warming, acidification and eutrophication potentials associated with household food waste are, on average, 3.49 kg CO2e/week, 2.42 g SO2e/week and 8.70 g PO…
