Cost-driven framework for progressive compression of textured meshes

2019

International audience; Recent advances in digitization of geometry and radiometry generate in routine massive amounts of surface meshes with texture or color attributes. This large amount of data can be compressed using a progressive approach which provides at decoding low complexity levels of details (LoDs) that are continuously refined until retrieving the original model. The goal of such a progressive mesh compression algorithm is to improve the overall quality of the transmission for the user, by optimizing the rate-distortion trade-off. In this paper, we introduce a novel meaningful measure for the cost of a progressive transmission of a textured mesh by observing that the rate-distor…

Mesh connectivity compression using convection reconstruction

2007

International audience; During a highly productive period running from 1995 to about 2002, the research in lossless compression of 3D meshes mainly consisted in a hard battle for the best bitrates. But for a few years, compression rates seem stabilized around 1.5 bit per vertex for the connectivity coding of usual meshes, and more and more work is dedicated to remeshing, lossy compression, or gigantic mesh compression, where memory and CPU optimizations are the new priority. However, the size of 3D models keeps growing, and many application fields keep requiring lossless compression. In this paper, we present a new contribution for single-rate lossless connectivity compression, which first …

Saliency Features for 3D CAD-Data in the Context of Sampling-Based Motion Planning

2021

In this paper, we consider disassembly scenarios for real-world 3D CAD-data, where each component is defined by a triangle mesh. For a fast construction of collision-free disassembly paths, common approaches use sampling-based rigid body motion planning which is well studied in the literature. One fact that has so far received little attention is that in industrial disassembly scenarios components are often attached to each other with flexible fastening elements like clips. In the planning process, the fastening elements show the following characteristics: 1) They can cause complex non-linear disassembly paths. 2) They are often deformable. 3) They are usually modeled in a relaxed state and…

Modelling Polycrystalline Materials: An Overview of Three-Dimensional Grain-Scale Mechanical Models

2014

International audience; A survey of recent contributions on three-dimensional grain-scale mechanical modelling of polycrystalline materials is given in this work. The analysis of material micro-structures requires the generation of reliable micro-morphologies and affordable computational meshes as well as the description of the mechanical behavior of the elementary constituents and their interactions. The polycrystalline microstructure is characterized by the topology, morphology and crystallographic orientations of the individual grains and by the grain interfaces and microstructural defects, within the bulk grains and at the inter-granular interfaces. Their analysis has been until recentl…

A predictive approach for a real-time remote visualization of large meshes

2012

Déjà sur HAL; Remote access to large meshes is the subject of studies since several years. We propose in this paper a contribution to the problem of remote mesh viewing. We work on triangular meshes. After a study of existing methods of remote viewing, we propose a visualization approach based on a client-server architecture, in which almost all operations are performed on the server. Our approach includes three main steps: a first step of partitioning the original mesh, generating several fragments of the original mesh that can be supported by the supposed smaller Transfer Control Protocol (TCP) window size of the network, a second step called pre-simplification of the mesh partitioned, ge…

Reliable numerical solution of a class of nonlinear elliptic problems generated by the Poisson-Boltzmann equation

2020

We consider a class of nonlinear elliptic problems associated with models in biophysics, which are described by the Poisson-Boltzmann equation (PBE). We prove mathematical correctness of the problem, study a suitable class of approximations, and deduce guaranteed and fully computable bounds of approximation errors. The latter goal is achieved by means of the approach suggested in [S. Repin, A posteriori error estimation for variational problems with uniformly convex functionals. Math. Comp., 69:481-500, 2000] for convex variational problems. Moreover, we establish the error identity, which defines the error measure natural for the considered class of problems and show that it yields computa…

Combination Of Handcrafted And Deep Learning-Based Features For 3d Mesh Quality Assessment

2020

We propose in this paper a novel objective method to evaluate the perceived visual quality of 3D meshes. The proposed method in no-reference, it relies only on the distorted mesh for the quality estimation. It is based on a pre-trained convolutional neural network (i.e VGG to extract features from the distorted mesh) and handcrafted features extracted directly from the 3D mesh (i.e curvature and dihedral angle). A General Regression Neural Network (GRNN) is used to learn the statistical parameters of the feature vectors and estimate the quality score. Experimental results from for subjective databases (LIRIS masking, LIRIS/EPFL generalpurpose, UWB compression and LEETA simplification) and c…

Full Reference Mesh Visual Quality Assessment Using Pre-Trained Deep Network and Quality Indices

2019

In this paper, we propose an objective quality metric to evaluate the perceived visual quality of 3D meshes. Our method relies on pre-trained convolutional neural network i.e VGG to extract features from the distorted mesh and its reference. Quality indices from well-known mesh visual quality metrics are concatenated with the extracted features resulting a global feature vector. this latter is used to learn the support vector regression (SVR) to predict the final quality score. Experimental results from two subjective databases (LIRIS masking database and LIRIS/EPFL general-purpose database) and comparisons with seven objective metrics cited in the state-of-the-art demonstrate the effective…

Reduced Reference Mesh Visual Quality Assessment Based on Convolutional Neural Network

2018

3D meshes are usually affected by various visual distortions during their transmission and geometric processing. In this paper we propose a reduced reference method for mesh visual quality assessment. The method compares features extracted from the distorted mesh and the original one using a convolutional neural network in order to estimate the visual quality score. The perceptual distance between two meshes is computed as the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the two sets of feature vectors. Experimental results from two subjective databases (LIRIS masking database and LIRIS/EPFL general purpose database) and comparisons with seven objective metrics cited in the state-of-the-art demonstr…

<title>Multiresolution description of range images through 2D quincunx wavelet analysis</title>

1999

In this paper, we present a method for performing a multi- scale analysis on range images by using the wavelet transform, that is capable of revealing multi-resolution information. An accurate non-contact optical system based upon laser triangulation is used to determine the depth information of the object being scanned. The resulting range image is treated as a gray-level image by using a multi- resolution approach based on the generalization of the cascade algorithm using the quincunx wavelet transform. The quincunx wavelet assures very fine analysis. This method allows reconstruction of non-subsampled images that correspond to decompositions previously done at chosen scales. Multi-resolu…
