The efficacy of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer films (EVOH) incorporating the essential oil components cinnamaldehyde (CINHO), citral (CIT), isoeugenol (IEG), or linalool (LIN) to control growth rate (GR) and production of T-2 and HT-2 toxins by Fusarium sporotrichioides cultured on oat grains under different temperature (28, 20, and 15 °C) and water activity (aw) (0.99 and 0.96) regimes was assayed. GR in controls/treatments usually increased with increasing temperature, regardless of aw, but no significant differences concerning aw were found. The organotin polyether derived from reaction of dibutyltin dichloride and 2,5-dimethyl-3-hexyne-2,5-diol was rapidly synthesized employing classical interfacial polymerization in 65% yield and a chain length of 360 units. IR results are consistent with the polyether structure. Bands characteristic of the formation of the Sn-O are present and bands characteristic of the Sn-Cl are absent. F MALDI MS results in the low mass range gives ion fragment clusters to five units. Isotopic abundance matches for tin are consistent with its presence in these ion fragment clusters. Abstract The present work proposes an experimental optical methodology able to measure the transient swelling stresses induced by the water uptake ageing of polymers. In particular, the work describes the implementation of a Photoelastic technique to quantify internal stresses arising during the hydrothermal ageing of cast epoxy samples.
