Solid state NMR - A tool for studying molecular motion in polymers

1986

After an introduction describing the development of 1H, 2H, and 13C solid state NMR two sections on 13C and 2H NMR, respectively, outline the physical background as related with molecular motion. Some representative examples demonstrate the potential of recent NMR techniques in polymer dynamics studies.

Multi-stimuli responsive polymers – the all-in-one talents

2014

Stimuli-responsive polymers have gained increasing attention, which is attributed to the manifold applications they can be used for. Several years' intensive research was invested in stimuli-responsive polymers. Their stimuli-responsiveness led not only to novel responsive groups, which enabled the translation of an external physical impact into a change of a material property, but also to polymers that are equipped with more than one responsive group. The integration of several responsive moieties within one polymer yields smart polymers exhibiting complex responsive behaviour of the polymers. This review summarises recent developments in the area of multi-stimuli responsive polymers, layi…

Facilitating polymer conjugation via combination of RAFT polymerization and activated ester chemistry

2010

The synthesis of block copolymers via polymer conjugation of well-defined building blocks offers excellent control over the structures obtained, but often several coupling strategies need to be explored to find an efficient one depending on the building blocks. To facilitate the synthesis of polymers with adjustable functional end-groups for polymer conjugation, we report on the combination of activated ester chemistry with RAFT polymerization using a chain transfer agent (CTA) with a pentafluorophenyl ester (PFP-CTA), which allows for flexible functionalization of either the CTA prior to polymerization or the obtained polymer after polymerization. Different polymethacrylates, namely PMMA, …

pH-sensitive hydrogel based on a novel photocross-linkable copolymer.

2004

A pH sensitive hydrogel has been prepared by a UV irradiation technique. Starting polymer was the PHM (poly hydroxyethylaspartamide methacrylated) obtained from polyaspartamide (PHEA) partially derivatized with methacrylic anhydride (MA). This new copolymer has been further derivatized with succinic anhydride (SA) to obtain PHM-SA that has been cross-linked by UV irradiation to form a pH sensitive hydrogel. The network, recovered after washing as a powder, has been been characterized by FT-IR spectrophotometry and particle size distribution analysis. Moreover, to have information about water affinity of the prepared sample, swelling measurements have been carried out in aqueous media mimick…

Single molecule probing of dynamics in supercooled polymers

2011

6 pages; International audience; Fluorescence experiments with single BODIPY molecules embedded in a poly(methyl acrylate) matrix have been performed at various temperatures in the supercooled regime. By using pulsed excitation, fluorescence lifetime and linear dichroism time trajectories were accessible at the same time. Both observables have been analyzed without data binning. While the linear dichroism solely reflects single particle dynamics, the fluorescence lifetime observable depends on the molecular environment, so that the dynamics from the polymer host surrounding a chromophore contributes to this quantity. We observe that the lifetime correlation decays slightly faster than polar…

A Mixed-Ligand Approach for Spin-Crossover Modulation in a Linear FeII Coordination Polymer

2014

In this work, we present a family of Fe(II) coordination polymers of general formula [Fe(btzx)(3-3x)(btix)(3x)](ClO4)2 with interesting spin-crossover properties. These coordination polymers have been synthesized using chemical mixtures of two different but closely related ligands, 1,4-bis(tetrazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (btzx) and 1,4-bis(triazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (btix), and the effect of a gradual substitution of the ligand in the spin transition temperature has been investigated. Several chemical mixtures have been structurally characterized by X-ray powder diffraction indicating a clear critical amount in the composition of the mixture after which mixed phases rather than a single phase c…

On the handedness of helical aggregates of C3 tricarboxamides: a multichiroptical characterization

2015

A complete chiroptical characterization of the supramolecular polymers formed by tricarboxamides (S)-1 and (R)-1 is performed using ECD, VCD and CPL dichroic techniques. The helical aggregates show an intense CPL signal and their absolute P- or M-configuration is assigned with the help of theoretical calculations.

Recycling of the "light fraction" from municipal post-consumer plastics: Effect of adding wood fibers

1999

At present the recycling of plastic materials is mostly done using homogeneous polymers. Therefore a separation from a municipal collection of plastic objects is necessary before recycling operations. The easiest way of separation is by flotation in water, i.e. the separation of the different plastics based on the different densities with respect to water. This means that all the plastic materials are separated in a “light fraction” mostly of polypropylene and polyethylene and in a “heavy fraction” mainly of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and poly(ethylene terephthalate). The recycling of the light fraction should, in principle, be easy because of the relative similarity of the chemical structu…

Study on compatibilization of polypropylene-liquid crystalline polymer blends

1997

The mechanical properties, melt rheology, and morphology of binary blends comprised of two polypropylene (PP) grades and two liquid crystalline polymers (LCP) have been studied. Compatibilization with polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride (PP-g-MAH) has been attempted. A moderate increase in the tensile moduli and no enhancements in tensile strength have been revealed. Those findings have been attributed to the morphology of the blends, which is predominantly of the disperse mode. LCP fibers responsible for mechanical reinforcement were only exceptionally evidenced. Discussion of PP-LCP interfacial characteristics with respect to mechanical properties-morphology interrelations allowed…
