“Compatibilization” through Elongational Flow Processing of LDPE/PA6 Blends

2018

Polyamide/polyolefin blends have gained attention from the academia and the industry for several years. However, in order to optimize their properties, some drawbacks such as chemical incompatibility must be adequately overcome. This can be done by adding suitable compatibilizers. On the other hand, it is less known that suitable processing techniques may also lead to significant results. In a previous work on a low-density polyethylene/polyamide 6 (LDPE/PA6) blend, we found that the orientation due to elongational flow processing conditions could lead to an unexpected brittle&ndash

Influence of calcium‐based fillers and vegetable oil on the processability and yield behavior of polyolefins

1997

The mixing of different polyolefins, several calcium-based fillers, and a type of vegetable oil was investigated. The effect of viscosity and type of polyolefin on Young's modulus, yield stress, and elongation at yield has been determined. Tensile and machine torque properties have been studied for both mixing at 180°C and at 250°C as a function of the content of several types of calcium carbonate or calcium hydroxide filler. The influence of the addition of a sunflower oil as a lubricant has also been characterized. SEM micrographs indicate some problems of the formation of agglomerates and the influence of particle size on matrix morphology and filler/matrix adhesion. Physical and chemica…

Synthesis and catalytic performance in ethylene and 1-octene polymerization of chlorotitanium(IV) silsesquioxane complexes. Effect of increasing liga…

2016

Abstract The series of titanasilsesquioxanes that differ in a way of binding to the transition metal ( via one, two or three oxygen atoms) and type of nonreactive substituents bonded to inorganic oxygen-silicon cage ( i -Bu, Ph, c -C 6 H 11 ) were prepared by reacting of TiCl 4 with 1 eqv. of the silsesquioxane ligand. Upon treatment with an appropriate cocatalyst, all titanium precatalysts are active in ethylene and 1-octene polymerization and produce from low to high molecular weight polyethylenes and moderately ([ mmmm ] = 44–74%) isotactic poly(1-octene)s. The influence of polymerization parameters, type of cocatalyst and the silsesquioxane structure on the catalytic behavior of the tit…

Characterization of Chemical Composition along the Molar Mass Distribution in Polyolefin Copolymers by GPC Using a Modern Filter-Based IR Detector

2013

Summary Gel permeation chromatography (GPC), also known as size exclusion chromatography (SEC), is the technique routinely used at high temperature to analyze the molar mass distribution in polyolefins. The distribution of comonomer along the molar mass distribution in a copolymer is a key microstructural feature that determines the macroscopic properties of the material, and thus, its range of possible applications and performance. The direct coupling of a modern filter-based infrared (IR) detector to a high temperature GPC instrument, by means of a heated flow-through cell, is here described. The analyses are carried out by recording the continuous IR absorbance chromatograms at selected …

The role of organoclay and matrix type in photo-oxidation of polyolefin/clay nanocomposite films

2009

Abstract In this paper the photo-oxidation behaviour of polyolefin/clay nanocomposite films was studied; in particular, the effect of the amount of organo-modifier and the matrix polarity on the photo-oxidation was investigated. Two different organo-modified clays and compositions of LDPE/EVA blend films were used and the photo-oxidation was followed by mechanical and spectroscopic analyses. The organoclay and matrix type strongly influence the photo-oxidative behaviour of nanocomposite films. The films filled with CL15A show a faster loss of mechanical performance and higher carbonyl formation with respect to the films filled with the CL20A. Additionally, the LDPE based nanocomposite under…

Comparison of cellulose nanocrystals obtained by sulfuric acid hydrolysis and ammonium persulfate, to be used as coating on flexible food-packaging m…

2016

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), extracted from trees, plants, or similar cellulose-containing materials, can be used in combination with other materials to improve their performance or introduce new applications. The main purpose of this study was to compare and understand the potentialities, as coatings for Poly(ethylene terephthalate) films, of CNCs obtained starting from the same cotton linters by two different processes: sulfuric acid hydrolysis and a less common treatment with ammonium persulfate (APS), able to provide also a cellulose oxidation. The results showed that CNCs produced through the APS treatment showed higher charge densities, due to the carboxylic groups formed during the…

Advanced ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene/antioxidant-functionalized carbon nanotubes nanocomposites with improved thermo-oxidative resistance

2015

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) functionalized with hindered phenol moieties are dispersed in ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), and the stabilizing action of the antioxidant (AO) functionalized CNTs (AO-f-CNTs) is studied through a combination of rheological and spectroscopic (FT-IR) analyses. The effectiveness of two alternative compounding methods, namely hot compaction (HC) and melt mixing (MM), is compared. The combination of high temperature and mechanical stress experienced during MM brings about noticeable degradation phenomena of the matrix already in the course of the compounding step. Differently, the milder conditions of the HC process preserve the stability …

Double bond-functionalized POSS: dispersion and crosslinking in polyethylene-based hybrid obtained by reactive processing

2016

Polyethylene-based organic inorganic hybrids were prepared by one-step reactive melt mixing using a mono-functionalized nanofiller, i.e., allyl-heptaisobutyl-substituted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (1POSS) and a multi-functionalized octavinyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (8POSS). The hybrids were also prepared in dicumyl peroxide (DCP) presence and morphological, spectroscopical and calorimetric analysis were carried out. Moreover, rheological measurement and Sohxlet extraction were performed on investigated samples. It was inferred that double bonds of POSS functional groups were triggered by radicals coming from the peroxide decomposition or from the degradation reactions…

Orientation induced brittle – Ductile transition in a polyethylene/polyamide 6 blend

2014

Abstract Polyamide/polyolefin blends are of scientific and technological interest but, on the other hand, the different chemical nature of the two components makes them incompatible, resulting in unsatisfactory physical properties and making compatibilization necessary. In particular, although the two components are ductile, the binary blends can show brittle behaviour. It is also known that the effect of the elongational flow (and then of the induced orientation) on polymer blends is a decrease of elongation at break with increase of the degree of orientation. In this work, the effect of orientation on the mechanical properties of a low density polyethylene/polyamide 6 incompatible blend w…

Thermal stability and flammability of polyolefin/halloysite nanotubes composites

2015
