Aqueous Laponite Clay Dispersions in the Presence of Poly(ethylene oxide) or Poly(propylene oxide) Oligomers and their Triblock Copolymers
2008
The effect of polyethylene oxide (PEO) or polypropylene oxide (PPO) oligomers of various molecular weight (Mw) as well as of triblock copolymers, based on PEO and PPO blocks, on aqueous laponite RD suspensions was studied with small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The radius of gyration (RG) increases for low Mw whereas the opposite occurs for larger Mw. This behavior is explained on the-basis that an effective RG is given by two contributions: (1) the size of the particles coated with the polymer and (2) the interactions between the laponite RD particles which are attractive for small and repulsive for large polymers. The SANS curves in the whole Q-range are well described by a model of n…
Gamma radiation induced maleation of polypropylene using supercritical CO 2 : preliminary results
2000
Abstract The charging of maleic anhydride (MA) and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) into polypropylene matrices has been carried out by CO2 in supercritical conditions. The grafting of MA into polymer chains was done through gamma irradiation in CO2 atmosphere (0.1 MPa, 25°C). The grafting was successful and the amount of grafted anhydride was dependent on the amount of MA and DCP charged into the polypropylene matrix. The presence of grafted succinic anhydride was shown by FT-IR spectroscopy and its amount was determined through a calibration curve derived from standard samples. The effect of swelling due to supercritical CO2, maleic anhydride grafting and gamma irradiation on the molecular structur…
Improving the properties of polypropylene–wood flour composites by utilization of maleated adhesion promoters
2007
Polymer composites filled with natural organic fillers have gained a significant interest during the last few years, because of several advantages they can offer compared with properties of inorganic-mineral fillers. However, these composites (based, in most cases, on polyolefins) often show a reduction in some mechanical properties. This is mainly due to the problems regarding dispersion of the polar filler particles in the non-polar polymer matrix and their interfacial adhesion with polymer chains. In this work, polypropylene-wood flour composites were prepared and the effect of the addition of a maleated polypropylene was investigated. The two materials were compounded by an industrial c…
Mechanical, structural and magnetic properties of polypropylene/iron ferrite magnetic nanocomposites
2012
In this research, composites of polypropylene (PP) and a relatively small concentrations of iron ferrite (Fe3O4) nanopowder equal to 2, 5 and 10 wt.% have been made. An methacrylate monomer 2,2'-bis-(4-(2-methylprop-2-enoyloxy)phenyl)- propane (BAD) was added at a small amount (3 wt.%) to part of the composites during the thermoplastic mixing. The BAD has been used as a compatibilizing agent on the phase interaction between the filler and the matrix of polypropylene. It has been found that composites have adjustable mechanical, structural and magnetic properties dependent on the content of magnetic filler. Increase of concentration of ferrite particles affects a notable increase of elastic …
Oxidation of N,N-Benzylalkylamines to Nitrones by Mo(VI) and W(VI) Polyperoxo Complexes
1996
Abstract Oxidation of N,N-benzylalkylamines in chloroform by Mo(VI) and W(VI) polyperoxo complexes (PPC) of general formula Q+3{PO4[MO(O2)2]4}3− (Q+ = onium ion) yield the corresponding nitrones as oxidized products quantitatively. Only in the case of N,N-benzylmethylamine the formation of nitrone is accompanied by 25% of benzaldoxime. Oxidation of N,N-benzyltertbutylamine and N,N-benzylisopropylamine follows second order kinetics. This finding does not disqualify the hypothesis that the reaction might occur by a rate determining nucleophilic attack of the amine onto the peroxide oxygens leading, through a Bartlett-type transition state, to the probable formation of the corresponding hydrox…
Contact probe voltammetry for in situ monitoring of the reactivity of phenolic tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) compounds with ROS
2015
The application of an in situ electrochemical contact probe methodology for monitoring reactivity of antioxidant polyphenolic compounds in tomato fruits is described. Upon electrochemical generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), characteristic voltammetric responses were recorded for compounds resulting from the reaction of such species with tomato compounds. This suggests that new electrochemically oxidizable compounds are generated from the oxidation of highly reactive polyphenolic compounds with ROS. Therefore, an evaluation of the antioxidant capacity of such species could be made from voltammetric data for different tomato varieties.
Electrochemical monitoring of ROS influence on seedlings and germination response to salinity stress of three species of the tribe Inuleae.
2019
Solid-state electrochemical methods have been applied to the establishment of patterns of plant growth and response to saline stress using seedlings of Inula helenium L., Dittrichia viscosa (L.) Greuter (Inula viscosa (L.) Aiton), Limbarda crithmoides (L.) Dumort (Inula crithmoides L.). Upon in situ electrochemical generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) the reactivity with such species was monitored using voltammetric signals associated to the oxidation of polyphenolic components of the plants. A simple kinetic model based on second-order reaction between ROS and polyphenolic components is applied to electrochemical data yielding apparent rate constants which can be correlated with the…
Comparative effect of supercritical carbon dioxide and high pressure processing on structural changes and activity loss of oxidoreductive enzymes
2019
Abstract Due to the CO2 specific characteristics, it has been used as supercritical (Sc) fluid for several applications, including enzyme inactivation. The influence of Sc-CO2 (10–65 MPa/10–30 min/35–65 °C) on mushroom polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and horseradish peroxidase (POD) was evaluated and the results were compared with those found using high pressure processing (HPP) (200–900 MPa/5–45 °C/1–15 min). The free ion concentration was also studied to compare the enzymatic activity and changes in electrical conductivity. Additionally both enzymes, untreated or treated using either Sc-CO2 or HPP, were used as additives in the CuCl2 crystallization method. The resulting additive-specific CuCl2 …
Characterisation of Bobal and Crujidera grape cultivars, in comparison with Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon: Evolution of leaf macronutrients and …
2008
Abstract We present characterisation data for two Spanish autochthonous grapevines, Bobal and Crujidera, in comparison with the well-known cultivars Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. Microsatellite markers were used for the molecular characterisation of Crujidera grapevines. Leaf macronutrient contents of the four cultivars were evaluated, as well as their changes at different vine developmental stages, and veraison was seen as the most suitable time to evaluate the nutritional status. Quantitative changes in some physiological parameters and the phenolic composition of the four grape varieties were measured during the last month of ripening. Polyphenols, tannins and anthocyanins increase…
Dynamic evolution of the oscillatory Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction upon addition of a non-ionic polymer
2006
Abstract The dynamic evolution of the oscillatory Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction upon addition of increasing amount of the non-ionic polymer polypropylene glycol with molecular weight 425 g mol−1 (PPG-425) was investigated in a stirred-batch reactor by monitoring the Ce(IV) absorbance changes. The oscillatory parameters are significantly altered by the presence of the polymer. The findings obtained in the present work revealed that the PPG-425 is not only more effective, than other polymer previously [R. Lombardo, C. Sbriziolo, M.L. Turco Liveri, K. Pelle, M. Wittmann, Z.
