Biomechanical and histological evaluation of abdominal wall compliance with intraperitoneal onlay mesh implants in rabbits: A comparison of six diffe…
2012
Abstract Background An ideal prosthetic mesh for incisional hernia repair should mimic the anisotropic compliance of the abdominal wall, and at lower loads should exhibit higher distensibility without impairment of safety at higher loads. This study evaluated the biomechanical properties of six meshes in a rabbit model. Methods New Zealand white rabbits were used for this study. Two meshes of the same brand (Ethicon Physiomesh™, Bard Composix ® L/P, Gore Dualmesh ® , Bard Sepramesh ® , Ethicon Proceed ® or Parietex™ Composite) were implanted into each animal for assessment of intra-abdominal hernia repair, with a total of ten meshes per group. Twelve weeks after implantation, the abdominal …
Laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy in the treatment of vaginal vault prolapse: 8 years experience
2009
Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term results of a laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy for the treatment of vaginal vault prolapse. Study design Between January 1999 and January 2007, 165 laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy procedures, using a polypropylene mesh, were performed on women affected by vaginal vault prolapse. Intraoperative complications included: 5 bladder injuries and 3 sigmoid perforations. Postoperative complications included: 10 cases of fever, 5 cases of lumbosciatica, 15 cases of detrusor overactivity, 2 cases of vaginal haematoma, and 5 cases of minimal dispareunia. At 1, 6 and 12 months after surgery, a clinical evaluation was carried out for all patie…
Progrip self-gripping mesh in Rives-Stoppa repair: Are there any differences in outcomes versus a retromuscular polypropylene mesh fixed with sutures…
2017
Highlights • The Rives-Stoppa technique is an excellent repair in midline incisional hernia. • Prospective comparative analysis between retromuscular Self-gripping mesh and PPL fixed with sutures. • Self-gripping mesh is related to less postoperative pain the first 48 h after repair. • There were more postoperative hematomas in Non-Progrip group. • There were no differences in hernia recurrence in both groups.

Gastrinomas are rare tumors of the neuroendocrine system, occurring within the pancreas and duodenum. The annual incidence is estimated at 0.5 per million of the population [1]. Overproduction of gastrin by these tumors produces a sustained increase in gastric acid secretion, leading to clinical manifestations of complicated peptic ulcer disease known as the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES) [2]. Although most gastrinomas grow slowly, over 60 % are malignant and 25 % show rapid aggressive behavior [3-5]. Most commonly gastrinomas metastasize to regional lymph nodes and the liver, and it is this malignant potential which has become increasingly important since the introduction of effective me…
Health literacy of patients on oral anticoagulation treatment- individual and social determinants and effect on health and treatment outcomes
2021
Abstract Background Assessment health literacy in people with cardiovascular health problems would facilitate the development of appropriate health strategies for the care and reduction of complications associated with oral anticoagulation therapy. Aim: To evaluate the relationship between health literacy and health and treatment outcomes (concordance with oral anticoagulants, Normalized Ratio control and occurrence of complications) in patients with cardiovascular pathology. Methods Observational, analytic and cross-sectional study carried out on 252 patients with cardiovascular pathology (atrial fibrillation, flutter or valve prosthesis), aged 50–85 years, accessing primary care services …
Is oxidative stress a therapeutic target in cardiovascular disease?
2010
An abnormal production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the subsequent decrease in vascular bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO) have long been proposed to be the common pathogenetic mechanism of the endothelial dysfunction, resulting from diverse cardiovascular risk factors such as hypercholesterolaemia, diabetes mellitus, chronic smoking, metabolic syndrome, and hypertension. Superoxide produced by the nicotinamide dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase, mitochondrial sources, or the xanthine oxidase may react with NO, thereby resulting in excessive formation of peroxynitrite, a reactive nitrogen species that has been demonstrated to accelerate the atherosclerotic process by causing d…
Course of olfaction after sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis
2017
Background The influence of surgery on olfaction in patients who suffer from chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is still not fully understood. Most particularly, the time course of the recovery is poorly studied. Methods The prospective study describes the results of the Sniffin' Sticks identification test in 41 subjects before (V1), 2 weeks after (V2), and 6 months after (V3) endonasal sinus surgery (ESS). Influencing factors (gender, revision surgery, nasal polyposis, and initial olfactory score) on the changes of the smell testing were evaluated. Results The whole cohort showed a significant improvement in Identification scores, from 8.63 to 10.24 after 2 weeks and to 10.68 after 6 months. Pat…

Endoscopic Management for Patients with Serrated Polyposis Syndrome is Feasible and Effective:
2014
Background and Study Aims: Serrated polyposis syndrome is a rare condition in which multiple serrated lesions develop all over the colon, which is thought to be associated with an increased risk for the development of cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of endoscopic treatment and standardised surveillance in patients with this increasingly recognised syndrome. Methods: From September 2010 to November 2013, consecutive patients were included in a prospective study. All patients underwent chromoendoscopy at first presentation and during surveillance. Follow-up examinations were carried out at 3 month intervals until complete clearance was achieved. Afterwards, pa…
