Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system (CNS), characterized by chronic inflammation associated with autoimmune damage to myelin and axons leading to neurodegeneration. Although the etiology is not fully understood, some factors that increase the risk of disease have been identified. One of the key elements of multidisciplinary approach to the management of MS is a properly balanced diet, e.g. Swank diet. Its main assumption is to reduce the supply of animal fats in favor of fats of plant origin, which contain polyunsaturated fatty acids omega-3. Study of the Evolutionary Relationships among Limonium Species (Plumbaginaceae) Using Nuclear and Cytoplasmic Molecular Markers

The genus Limonium, due to the patchiness of the natural habitats of its species as well as the high frequency of hybridization and polyploidy and the possibility of reproduction by apomixis, provides an example of all the principal mechanisms of rapid speciation of plants. As an initial study of evolution in this genus, we have analyzed intra- and interspecific variability in 17 species from section Limonium, the largest in the genus, based on RFLPs of cpDNA and nuclear rDNA ITS sequences. THERMOMECHANICAL DEGRADATION OF A POLYPROPYLENE/GRAPHENE NANOCOMPOSITE

In this work the morphology and the rheological and mechanical properties of a nanocomposite made of a polypropylene with graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) have been investigated as a function of the compounding parameters to evaluate the thermomechanical degradation behaviour of this system. The presence of graphene seems to reduce the thermomechanical degradation of the matrix. A better dispersion of the GNP seems the cause of this behaviour.

It has been proposed that polyploid cells that arise during a variety of pathological conditions and as a result of exposure to genotoxicants, typically in the liver, become aneuploid through genetic instability. Aneuploidy contributes to, or even drives, tumour development. A taxonomic survey of lactic acid bacteria isolated from wheat (Triticum durum) kernels and non-conventional flours

In order to explore the correspondence between raw material- and mature sourdough-lactic acid bacterial (LAB) communities, 59 Italian wheat (Triticum durum) grain samples, one bran and six non-conventional flour samples were analyzed through a culture-dependent approach. The highest cell count by an agar medium specific for LAB was 2.16 log CFU/g. From about 2300 presumptive LAB (Gram-positive and catalase-negative) colonies collected, a total of 356 isolates were subjected to identification by a genetic polyphasic strategy consisting of RAPD-PCR analysis, partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing, species-specific and multiplex PCRs. Polyphyletic Origin of Vibrio vulnificus Biotype 2 as Revealed by Sequence-Based Analysis ▿ †

ABSTRACT A sequence-based analysis of seven housekeeping and virulence-related genes shows that the species Vibrio vulnificus is subdivided into three phylogenetic lineages that do not correspond with the biotypes and that biotype 2 is polyphyletic. These results support the reclassification of biotype 2 as a pathovar that would group the strains with pathogenic potential to develop vibriosis in fish.

Polyphasic taxonomic characterization of Lactobacillus rossiae isolates from Belgian and Italian sourdoughs reveals intraspecific heterogeneity.

Abstract (GTG) 5 -PCR fingerprinting and pheS sequence analysis of 18 Lactobacillus rossiae isolates, mainly originating from Belgian and Italian artisan sourdoughs, revealed intraspecies grouping as evidenced by the delineation of three and two subgroups, respectively. On the other hand, 16S rRNA and rpoA gene sequence analysis and DNA–DNA hybridizations supported the accommodation of all isolates in a single species. Impact of polyploidy on fertility variation of Mediterranean Arundo L. (Poaceae)

International audience; Failure of seed production in the genus Arundo L. (Poaceae) is often attributed to polyploidy. This study tested the impact of two ploidy levels (2n = 12 and 18x) on the fertility of four Mediterranean Arundo. Viable pollen was screened from its production to its germination, and seed occurrence was monitored in admixture or isolated conditions. In addition, insights on restructuration of polyploid genornes were analysed using molecular cytogenetics. Our results show that high ploidy levels do not automatically induce failure of sexual reproduction.
