New folate-functionalized biocompatible block copolymer micelles as potential anti-cancer drug delivery systems

2006

Abstract The main objective of this study was to synthesize novel folic acid-functionalized diblock copolymer micelles and evaluate their solubilization of two poorly water-soluble anti-tumor drugs, tamoxifen and paclitaxel, which suffer from low water solubility and/or poor hydrolytic stability. The diblock copolymer consisted of a permanently hydrophilic block comprising 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) residues and a pH-sensitive hydrophobic block comprising 2-(diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DPA) residues. Folic acid (FA) was conjugated to the end of the MPC block so that this group was located on the micelle periphery. Tamoxifen- and paclitaxel-loaded micelles were…

Novel cationic polyaspartamide with covalently linked carboxypropyl-trimethyl ammonium chloride as a candidate vector for gene delivery

2006

Abstract The non-viral gene vector properties of a protein-like polymer, the α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)- d , l -aspartamide (PHEA) were investigated after its derivatization with 3-(carboxypropyl)trimethyl-ammonium chloride (CPTA) as molecule bearing cationic groups, in order to obtain stable polycations able to condense DNA. PHEA was firstly functionalized with hydrazide pendant groups by reaction with hydrazine monohydrate (HYD), obtaining the polyhydrazide α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl/carbazate)- d , l -aspartamide (PHEA–HYD). In this paper we reported that polymer functionalization degree can be easily modulated by varying reaction conditions, so allowing us to produce two PHEA derivatives…

Untargeted screening of the bound / free phenolic composition in tomato cultivars for industrial transformation

2019

BACKGROUND Tomato is one of the most important agricultural crops and it is characterized by a wide bioactive compound profile. However, little information is reported on its comprehensive polyphenol profile. In this work, 13 commercial tomato cultivars for industrial transformation were screened by ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF-MS) for both free and bound phenolic profiles. Thereafter, the in vitro antioxidant activity of each cultivar was assessed by ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and oxygen radical absorbance activity (ORAC) assays. Multivariate statistics, i.e. orthogonal projection to latent struct…

Factors Affecting Polyphenol Biosynthesis in Wild and Field Grown St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum L. Hypericaceae/Guttiferae)

2009

The increasing diffusion of herbal products is posing new questions: why are products so often different in their composition and efficacy? Which approach is more suitable to increase the biochemical productivity of medicinal plants with large-scale, low-cost solutions? Can the phytochemical profile of a medicinal plant be modulated in order to increase the accumulation of its most valuable constituents? Will polyphenol-rich medicinal crops ever be traded as commodities? Providing a proactive answer to such questions is an extremely hard task, due to the large number of variables involved: intraspecific chemodiversity, plant breeding, ontogenetic stage, post-harvest handling, biotic and abi…

Oral CorticoSteroid sparing with biologics in severe asthma: A remark of the Severe Asthma Network in Italy (SANI)

2020

According to the data derived from several national and international registries, including SANI (Severe Asthma Network Italy), and considering the strong impact that frequent or regular use of oral corticosteroid has on quality of life (QoL) of severe asthmatics, as well as on the costs for managing corticosteroid-related diseases, oral corticosteroid sparing up to withdrawal should be considered a primary outcome in the management of severe asthma. New biologics have clearly demonstrated that this effect is possible, with concomitant reduction in the rate of exacerbations and in symptom control. Then, there is no reason for using so frequently oral corticosteroid before having explored al…

Impact of polyphenols and feeding rhythms on the immunomodulation properties of the probiotic bacteria in the gastro-intestinal tract

2021

The human intestinal microbiota is composed of several types of microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, fungi, unicellular eukaryotes and viruses. Among them, bacteria are the most diverse and abundant with a gene catalog 150 times larger than the genes present in the human genome, which represents a tremendous metabolic potential. These bacteria actively participate in the maintenance of intestinal homeostasis. Dysbiosis of the gut microbiota could be observed at course of many human pathologies, particularly inflammatory diseases intestinal chronic diseases (IBD), such as Crohn's disease (CD) or Ulcerative colitis (UC). These dysbiosis could contribute to the onset and progression of…

Extension of the potential intervals of high redox activity and electronic conductivity of polypyrrole films on electrode surface via their electroch…

2021

Abstract Thin polypyrrole films (thickness: about 30 nm) have been deposited at electrode surface via potentiostatic oxidation of dilute (1 mM) pyrrole solution in acetonitrile (AN). It has been shown that their subsequent treatment by means of multi-cycle voltammetry within a broad potential range (up to -2.0 V vs. Ag/Ag+ in AN) leads to their "activation", i.e. to a very strong extension of their redox response region in the negative direction as well as to almost uniform distribution of the redox activity within this potential range. Region of their high conductivity under in situ conditions has also extended significantly. Spectral and electrocatalytic properties of such PPy films befor…

Elaboration of ammonia gas sensors based on electrodeposited polypyrrole - cobalt phthalocyanine hybrid films

2013

The electrochemical incorporation of a sulfonated cobalt phthalocyanine (sCoPc) in conducting polypyrrole (PPy) was done, in the presence or absence of LiClO4, in order to use the resulting hybrid material for the sensing of ammonia. After electrochemical deposition, the morphological features and structural properties of polypyrrole/phthalocyanine hybrid films were investigated and compared to those of polypyrrole films. A gas sensor consisting in platinum microelectrodes arrays was fabricated using silicon microtechnologies, and the polypyrrole and polypyrrole/phthalocyanine films were electrochemically deposited on the platinum microelectrodes arrays of this gas sensor. When exposed to a…

Determination of phenolic antioxidants additives in industrial wastewater from polypropylene production using solid phase extraction with high-perfor…

2019

Abstract This paper describes a new method for the effective extraction of the residues of five synthetic phenolic antioxidants (AOs): Ditertbutylphenol (DTF), Irganox 1010, Irganox 1076, Ethanox 330 and Cyanox 1790, from industrial water produced during the polypropylene (PP) deodorization process. In the deordorization process, PP is stored in a column for an average time of four hours and exposed to nitrogen and water vapor to remove inflammable compounds which may generate atypical odors in the PP. The samples of interest were taken in the desorber, followed by cleansing and pre-concentration using modified styrene divinylbenzene polymer cartridges. Liquid chromatography was performed w…

Control of MicroRNA Expression as a New Way for Resveratrol To Deliver Its Beneficial Effects

2012

Grapes produce large amounts of polyphenols. Many of them accumulate in the skin, pulp, and seeds and are consequently found in wine. The health benefits of a moderate consumption of wine have been attributed at least in part to grape's polyphenols. Among them, resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene) is a phytoalexin that stimulates plant cell defenses against infections and also plays protective roles in humans, where it delays cardiovascular alterations and exerts anticancer and anti-inflammatory effects. Despite numerous studies, the molecular mechanisms of resveratrol action are only partially understood. Given its pleiotropic effects, it was previously suggested that resveratrol protec…
