Effects of dietary conjugated linoleic acids in the control of adiposity and obesity‐related disorders

The body fat-lowering effect of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) in experimental animals has attracted much interest because of the potential use of CLA as weight loss agents in humans. The objective of this review was to give an overview of the results from human intervention trials. The review also addresses experimental studies in animal models and in cultured cells. CLA appear to provoke fat mass loss and an increase of fat-free mass in rodents, but the results in humans are inconsistent and much less clear than in rodents. Purpose: Plasmalogens are particular phospholipids characterized by the presence of a vinyl-ether bond and of a polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) at sn-1 and sn-2 positions of glycerol, respectively. Even if the plasmalogen content of organs and tissues is well documented, their biological functions are still enigmatic. Plasmalogen deficiency in DAPAT-/- mice leads to developmental abnormalities in retinal vasculature (Acar et al, ARVO 2007 E-Abstract 2978) and to persistent hyaloïd arteries. Here we asked how starvation and subsequent feeding on different nutritional quality algae influences fatty acid retention, compound-specific isotopic carbon fractionation, and biosynthesis of omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the relict gammarid amphipod Pallaseopsis quadrispinosa. Phytoplankton synthesizes essential ω-3 and ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) for consumers in the aquatic food webs. Only certain phytoplankton taxa can synthesize eicosapentaenoic (EPA; 20:5ω3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6ω3), whereas all phytoplankton taxa can synthesize shorter-chain ω-3 and ω-6 PUFA. Cold exposure promotes glucose oxidation and modulates the lipid metabolism in adipose tissue, but it is still not fully clear whether cold exposure could affect meat quality and fatty acid metabolism in skeletal muscle of pig in vivo. Here, we kept finishing pigs under cold or room temperature overnight and determined the effects of cold exposure on meat quality, fatty acids composition and transcriptional changes in skeletal muscle of pigs. Inferring phytoplankton community composition with a fatty acid mixing model

Abstract. The taxon specificity of fatty acid composition in algal classes suggests that fatty acids could be used as chemotaxonomic markers for phytoplankton composition. The applicability of phospholipid-derived fatty acids as chemotaxonomic markers for phytoplankton composition was evaluated by using a Bayesian fatty acid-based mixing model.
