Congenital renal arteriovenous malformation (aneurysmal type) in childhood.

We report on a 9-year-old boy with a congenital renal arteriovenous fistula of the aneurysmal type, a form previously not observed in childhood. The clinical picture was unusual with severe arterial hypertension, excessive polyuria and decreased levels of serum sodium and chloride as main signs. Clinical and biochemical findings normalised after nephrectomy of the kidney involved.

Xanthine oxidase-induced oxidative stress causes activation of NF-κB and inflammation in the liver of type I diabetic rats

We previously showed that xanthine oxidase activity increases in type I diabetic animals and that this is a significant cause of the oxidative stress which occurs in the disease. The aim of this work was to search for molecular links between xanthine oxidase-induced oxidative stress and inflammation in Type I diabetes and to assess the ability of allopurinol, a drug widely used in clinical practice, to prevent both processes. 3-month-old male Wistar rats were made diabetic by injection (i.p.) of either streptozotocin or alloxan. Abstract: Purpose: We verify the sodium fraction excretion rate (FE Na) and potassium fraction excretion WE K) rates in monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis. We also correlate FE Na and FE K to urinary osmolality, nocturnal polyuria and vasopressin in the same population. Materials and Methods: A total of 438 children 6 to 15 years old (mean age 9.7) presenting with monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis were recruited from different centers. Enuresis Subtypes Based on Nocturnal Hypercalciuria: A Multicenter Study

Purpose: Desmopressin may not be effective for nocturnal enuresis associated with polyuria and hypercalciuria. Nighttime hypercalciuria in an enuretic population from 5 centers and its correlation with nighttime polyuria were verified. Materials and Methods: A total of 450 enuretic patients (278 males, 172 females, mean age 9.7 years) were evaluated with 72-hour micturition charts, urinalysis, serum creatinine and osmolarity, diurnal and nocturnal electrolytes with fractional Na+ and K+ urinary excretion, and nocturnal (4 a.m.) plasma vasopressin. Effect of L-thyroxine on renal excretion of water and electrolytes in both normal and mercury-intoxicated rats.

The urine output and the change in excretion of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, inorganic phosphate) in rats following mercury-induced acute tubular lesions showed marked recovery during L-thyroxine therapy. The kidney mechanisms responsible for this effect are discussed, considering especially the observation that rats treated with L-thyroxine have a reduced urinary output, unlike other species, including man, which react with polyuria. The oliguric effect of thyroid hormone in rats is attributed to the greater length of the vasa recta and loops of Henle.

Use of a clinicoradiological score to determine the presurgical diagnosis of autoimmune hypophysitis in a teenage girl.

The distinction between autoimmune hypophysitis and other non–hormone secreting pituitary masses is often difficult to determine with certainty without pituitary biopsy and pathological examination. To aid in this distinction, the authors recently published a clinicoradiological scoring system, which they used in the case of a 15-year-old girl presented here. The patient presented with headache, visual field defects, polydipsia, and polyuria, and she was found to have secondary hypogonadism and hypoadrenalism. AbstractThe urinary bladder is markedly enlarged in the type 1 diabetes mellitus model of streptozotocin (STZ)-injected rats, but much less data exist for models of type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Diabetic polyuria has been proposed to explain bladder enlargement. Abstract Introduction. Gitelman syndrome (GS) is a rare inherited disorder. Mutations in SLC12A3 gene that encode tubular Na+Cl-cotransporter (NCCT) cause hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis, salt loss, hypomagnesaemia and hypocalciuria. The symptoms include weakness, vertigo, hypotension, tetany, paresthesia and nausea. Diagnostic criteria are a normal urine concentrating ability, normal glomerular filtration rate (GFR), hypomagnesaemia (<0,65mmol/l), hypokalemia (<3,6mmol/l) and hypocalciuria (<0,1mmol/mmol creatinine).
