Influence of high power ultrasound on physical-chemical properties of polypropylene films aimed for food packaging: barrier and contact angle features
2017
Investigation was focused on the impact of high power ultrasound (HPUS), also called thermosonication, on the oxygen permeation properties (permeability, solubility and diffusion coefficients) of barrier films aimed for food packaging. For this purpose, biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) coated with acrylic/polyvinylidene chloride (BOPPAcPVDC) and biaxially oriented coextruded polypropylene (BOPPcoex) were used. The physical–chemical profile of the samples was determined using goniometry. There is a significant impact only of extreme HPUS conditions (the longest time and the highest amplitude) on the permeability, solubility and diffusion coefficients of oxygen through the BOPP films. …
SAXS investigation on aggregation phenomena in supercritical CO2.
2004
Synchrotron Small-Angle X-Ray scattering (SAXS) measurements on aggregate formation of a Polyvinyl acetate- b-Perfluoro octyl acrylate (PVAc- b-PFOA) block copolymer in supercritical CO(2) are here reported. Experiments were carried out for a series of different thermodynamic conditions, changing the solvent density by profiling both the pressure at constant temperature and the temperature at constant pressure. This block copolymer and in general fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon di-blocks form aggregates depending on the value of CO(2) density. A sharp transition between monomers dissolved as random coils and micelles characterized by a solvophilic shell and a solvophobic core occurs when the CO(2)…

Influences of heat seal lacquer thickness on the quality of blister packages.
2011
A sealability of aluminium lidding foils against formable polymer materials of blister packages is usually achieved by a coating of aluminium with certain grammages of heat seal lacquers. To investigate influences of their thickness on quality of blister packages, lidding foils with different grammages of two lacquer types were manufactured. Sealing experiments (variation of temperature, pressure and sealing time) were performed. Sealed seam strengths were determined with mechanical tensile tests, tightness of cold form blisters were analysed by means of helium leakage tests. Time-dependent moisture uptake of stored blisters was monitored with micro-gas chromatography. By means of a simple …
Quality control of fruit juices by using organic acids determined by capillary zone electrophoresis with poly(vinyl alcohol)-coated bubble cell capil…
2015
An enhanced method for the determination of organic acids in several fruit juices by capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) with direct UV-Vis detection has been developed in this work. First, a study with simulated real juice samples was done to find the best separation conditions. Next, several commercial fruit juices were analyzed, and the organic acid contents were quantified in less than 12 min using a poly(vinyl alcohol)-coated fused-silica 'bubble cell' capillary. The present method is reliable, fast and provides detection limits comprised between 0.1 and 2.5 μg mL(-1). Moreover, different chemometric techniques, based on CZE data, were examined. Linear discriminant analysis allowed th…
Influence of PVP/VA copolymer composition on drug–polymer solubility
2015
In this study, the influence of copolymer composition on drug-polymer solubility was investigated. The solubility of the model drug celecoxib (CCX) in various polyvinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate (PVP/VA) copolymer compositions (70/30, 60/40, 50/50 and 30/70 w/w) and the pure homopolymers polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyvinyl acetate (PVA) was predicted at 25 °C using a thermal analysis method based on the recrystallization of a supersaturated amorphous dispersion (recrystallization method). These solubilities were compared with a prediction based on the solubility of CCX in the liquid monomeric precursors of PVP/VA, N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) and vinyl acetate (VA), using the Flory-Huggins …
Chemical composition and particle size influence the toxicity of nanoscale plastic debris and their co-occurring benzo(α)pyrene in the model aquatic …
2021
Little is known about how particle chemical composition and size might influence the toxicity of nanoscale plastic debris (NPD) and their co-occurring chemicals. Herein, we investigate the toxicity of 3 × 1010 particles/L polyethylene (PE, 50 nm), polypropylene (PP, 50 nm), polystyrene (PS, 200 and 600 nm), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC, 200 nm) NPD and their co-occurring benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) to Daphnia magna and Danio rerio. During the 21 days of exposure to PE 50 nm and PS 200 nm, the number of broods produced by D. magna decreased compared to other treatments. Exposure to BaP alone did not produce any effects on the reproduction of the daphnids, however, the mixture of BaP with PS (200 or …
Intraorifice sealing ability of different materials in endodontically treated teeth.
2010
Objectives To evaluate Cavit TM G, ProRoot TM MTA and Tetric® EvoFlow as intraorifice barriers to prevent coronal microleakage in root canal treatment. Study design Forty-two human single rooted teeth were divided randomly in three experimental groups of 10 specimens each and two control groups. The experimental groups were prepared with hand instrumentation and cold lateral condensed technique of the gutta-percha. Four millimetres of coronal gutta-percha were removed and replaced by one of the following filling materials: Cavit TM G, Tetric® EvoFlow or ProRoot TM MTA. In the experimental groups, leakage was measured by the concentration of leaked glucose in the apical reservoir at 1, 7, 30…
Consistency of Carbopol 971-P NF gels and influence of soluble and cross-linked PVP.
2002
A study is made of the polymerization process of polyacrylic acid, commercially known as Carbopol® 971 NF, assessing its consistency as a function of the degree of neutralization at pH values from 3 to 12, approximately. Percentage concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 1.4% (w/w) were studied. The gels obtained were non-Newtonian, and pseudoplastic. As concentration and pH rise, the consistency of the gels increase to a maximum, which appears between pH 6 and 8, allowing their use as vehicles in bioadhesive formulations for mucosal application. Over the increasing viscosity interval, functions were obtained to indicate the consistency of the gel as a function of pH and concentration. Since the…
Development and Characterization of Silver-Based Antimicrobial Ethylene–Vinyl Alcohol Copolymer (EVOH) Films for Food-Packaging Applications
2012
The use of silver as an antimicrobial in the food area has raised wide interest in recent years. In the present work, 0.001-10 wt % silver ions was satisfactorily incorporated into an ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer matrix by a solvent casting technique. The antibacterial efficacy of the composite was evaluated under laboratory conditions and in contact with some foods. The ionic compound did not affect the crystallinity or the water-induced plasticization of the materials and was homogeneously distributed across the surface and thickness of the films. When immersed in water, sorption-induced release of 50-100% of the silver ions took place in30 min. In the bacterial minimal growth …
