Gender and anthropometrics of patients undergoing cisplatin-containing chemotherapy as determinants of acute emesis over repeat courses

2002

Objective. To characterize the anthropometric and pharmacotherapeutic variables related to acute emesis over repeat courses of cisplatin-containing regimens (≥50 mg/m survival analysis.2) by means of survival analysis. Methods. A prospective, cross-sectional non-controlled study was started to analyse acute vomiting in patients treated in a general hospital. The patients received an intravenous combination of drugs based on metoclopramide (two 3 mg/kg doses), diphenhydramine (20 mg) and dexamethasone (20 mg) as first choice antiemetic treatment. An intravenous regimen based on ondansetron (8 mg) and dexamethasone (20 mg) was given as an alternative regimen. Therapeutic failure was defined …

Accuracy and Reliability of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography for Linear and Volumetric Mandibular Condyle Measurements. A Human Cadaver Study

2017

AbstractThe accuracy of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) on linear and volumetric measurements on condyles has only been assessed on dry skulls. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability and accuracy of linear and volumetric measurements of mandibular condyles in the presence of soft tissues using CBCT. Six embalmed cadaver heads were used. CBCT scans were taken, followed by the extraction of the condyles. The water displacement technique was used to calculate the volumes of the condyles and three linear measurements were made using a digital caliper, these measurements serving as the gold standard. Surface models of the condyles were obtained using a 3D scanner, and superim…

Survival of Erwinia amylovora in mature apple fruit calyces through the viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state

2009

Aims:  Survival of Erwinia amylovora, causal agent of fire blight in pome fruits and other rosaceous plants, was monitored inside mature apples calyces under some storage conditions utilized in fruit. Methods and Results:  Apple fruit calyces inoculated with two E. amylovora strains and their respective GFP-marked strains were maintained at 26° and 5°C, and the effect of copper treatment was assayed at 0·01 and 0·1 mmol l−1 CuSO4. In nontreated apples at 26°C, part of the population of E. amylovora survived in the ‘viable but nonculturable’ (VBNC) state, whereas at 5°C the majority of the population retained culturability. In copper-treated apples, the whole population adopted the VBNC stat…

Physical Activity Levels and Related Energy Expenditure during COVID-19 Quarantine among the Sicilian Active Population: A Cross-Sectional Online Sur…

2020

Background: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the Italian government has adopted containment measures to control the virus’s spread, including limitations to the practice of physical activity (PA). The aim of this study was to estimate the levels of PA, expressed as energy expenditure (MET–minute/week), among the physically active Sicilian population before and during the last seven days of the COVID-19 quarantine. Furthermore, the relation between this parameter and specific demographic and anthropometric variables was analyzed. Methods: 802 Sicilian physically active participants (mean age: 32.27 ± 12.81 years; BMI: 23.44 ± 3.33 kg/m2) were included in the study and…

Evaluation of an eHealth intervention aiming to promote healthy food habits from infancy -the Norwegian randomized controlled trial Early Food for Fu…

2019

Background Strategies to optimize early-life nutrition provide an important opportunity for primary prevention of childhood obesity. Interventions that can be efficiently scaled-up to the magnitude needed for sustainable childhood obesity prevention are needed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of an eHealth intervention on parental feeding practices and infant eating behaviors. Methods The Norwegian study Early Food for Future Health is a randomized controlled trial. Parents were recruited via social media and child health clinics during spring 2016 when their child was aged 3 to 5 months. In total 718 parents completed a web-based baseline questionnaire at child age …

Multicomponent Exercise Training Combined with Nutritional Counselling Improves Physical Function, Biochemical and Anthropometric Profiles in Obese C…

2020

Aerobics or strength exercise plus diet interventions have been shown to counteract childhood obesity. However, little is known with regard to periodized multicomponent exercise interventions combined with nutritional counselling, which might be less demanding but more enjoyable and respectful of children and adolescents&rsquo

The high rate of endoreduplication in the repair deficient CHO mutant EM9 parallels a reduced level of methylated deoxycytidine in DNA

2008

It has been recently proposed that hypomethylation of DNA induced by 5-azacytidine (5-azaC) leads to reduced chromatid decatenation that ends up in endoreduplication, most likely due to a failure in topo II function [S. Mateos, I. Domínguez, N. Pastor, G. Cantero, F. Cortés, The DNA demethylating 5-azaC induces endoreduplication in cultured Chinese hamster cells, Mutat. Res. 578 (2005) 33-42]. The Chinese hamster mutant cell line EM9 has a high spontaneous frequency of endoreduplication as compared to its parental line AA8. In order to see if this is related to the degree of DNA methylation, we have investigated the basal levels of both endpoints in AA8 and EM9, as well as the effect of ext…

The Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor JAHA Down-Regulates pERK and Global DNA Methylation in MDA-MB231 Breast Cancer Cells

2015

The histone deacetylase inhibitor N-1-(ferrocenyl)-N-8-hydroxyoctanediamide (JAHA) down-regulates extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and its activated form in triple-negative MDA-MB231 breast cancer cells after 18 h and up to 30 h of treatment, and to a lesser extent AKT and phospho-AKT after 30 h and up to 48 h of treatment. Also, DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1), 3b and, to a lesser extent, 3a, downstream ERK targets, were down-regulated already at 18 h with an increase up to 48 h of exposure. Methylation-sensitive restriction arbitrarily-primed (MeSAP) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis confirmed the ability of JAHA to induce genome-wide DNA hypomethylation at 48 h of expos…

Retentive strengths of cast gold crowns using glass ionomer, compomer, or resin cement

1998

The retention forces of a newly developed compomer cement (Dyract Cem), a glass ionomer cement (Ketac Cem Aplicap), and a resin cement (F21) were examined.Cemented cast gold crowns were removed along the path of insertion with a Zwick universal testing device. The impact of both a cured and a noncured additional bonding layer that were applied to the inner surface of the crowns was examined across the Dyract Cem group. The mean adhesive strength was measured at 2.36 +/- 0.69 N/mm2 in the Ketac Cem group, at 0.60 +/- 0.28 N/mm2 in the F21 group, and at 1.85 +/- 0.94 N/mm2 in the Dyract Cem group, respectively. The application of an additional bonding layer to the inner surface of the crowns d…

In vitro retentive strength of zirconium oxide ceramic crowns using different luting agents

2005

Statement of problem In contrast to gold crowns, in vitro determination of the retentive strength of all-ceramic crowns is more difficult because components allowing connection to testing apparatus are not as easily integrated into the all-ceramic material. Nevertheless, retentive strength data are crucial for obtaining information about the potential clinical performance of luting cements for all-ceramic restorations. Therefore, a new in vitro model was necessary to evaluate the retentive strength of all-ceramic crowns. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the retentive strength of 4 resin-cement systems, a compomer, a glass-ionomer cement, a resin-modified glass-ion…
