Development of a questionnaire to assay recalled liking for salt, sweet and fat

2012

Abstract Liking for a sweet, salty or fatty diet may induce overconsumption of simple carbohydrates, sodium or lipids. Measuring overall liking of the corresponding sensory sensations contributes to understanding the determinants of dietary behaviours. However, no standardized validated questionnaire assaying these sensations is currently available. In the present study, we developed a web-based questionnaire, “PrefQuest”, which measures recalled liking for the following four sensations: salt, fat and salt, sweet, fat and sweet. PrefQuest included four types of items: (1) liking for sweet, fatty-sweet and fatty-salty foods, (2) preferences in the level of seasoning by adding salt, sweetener…

Prevalence of nocturnal asthma in a general population sample: determinants and effect of aging.

2000

Nocturnal asthma (NA) is important because of clinical and prognostic implications. Previous data on prevalence may be overestimated, because they are derived from selected series. Observations on monitoring of peak expiratory flow in elderly asthmatics suggested that prevalence of NA may increase with age. This study was designed to estimate the prevalence of NA-related symptoms in a sample drawn from a general population and evaluate the role of aging. Subjects (1,100, mean age 41.9, SD 22.8 years) were randomly selected from the lists of seven general practitioners. A questionnaire on nighttime and morning NA-associated symptoms was used and frequency of occurrence was rated as never, so…

Underdiagnosis Of Asthma And Associated Risk Factors In Italian General Population Samples

2017

Background: asthma underdiagnosis was reported in many recent studies, in particular in older subjects. Aim: to assess the risk factors associated with asthma underdiagnosis in two Italian general population samples. Methods: two general population samples living in Pisa (Central Italy, urban/suburban area) and Po Delta (North Italy, rural area) participated in some cross-sectional studies between 1980 and 2011. Through a questionnaire on health status and risk factors, Pisa sample was investigated in 1985-1988, 1991-1993 and 2009-2011; Po Delta sample was investigated in 1980-1982 and 1988-1991. Individuals reporting asthma symptoms or diagnosis in the previous studies were recently enroll…

Disability, Health-Related Quality of Life and Mortality in Lumbar Spine Fusion Patients : A 5-Year Follow-Up and Comparison With a Population Sample

2022

Study Design: Prospective follow-up study. Objectives: We aimed to assess the effect of lumbar spine fusion (LSF) on disability, health-related quality of life and mortality in a 5-year follow-up, and to compare these results with the general population. Methods: 523 consecutive LSF operations were included in a prospective follow-up. Disability was assessed by the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and HRQoL by the 36-item Short Form (SF-36) questionnaire using the physical and mental summary scores (PCS and MCS). The patients were compared with an age-, sex-, and residential area matched general population cohort. Results: The preoperative ODI in the patients was 46 (SD 16), and the change …

Haemorheological components in the pre-geriatric and geriatric age range in a randomly selected Western Sicily population sample (Casteldaccia study)

1993

{Received 24.8.1992; accepted 7.12.1992} On a randomly selected western Sicily population sample (Casteldac cia Study: 600 subjects; 300 males and 300 females) of an age range from 40 to 79 years, were determined: Haematocrit (Htc) , blood vi scosity, plasma viscosity, filterability of whole blood and fibrinogen. Par ticipation was 97%, being 582 subjects (M = 287, F = 295). All the parameters measured showed a progressive increase with age and si gnificant differences were found between male and female subjects: Htc and blood viscosity were higher in male subjects (p < 0.01), while plasma viscosity, whole blood filterability and fibrinogen were higher in female subjects (p < 0.05). In …

Self-regulatory efficacy and sources of efficacy in elementary school pupils: Self-regulatory experiences in a population sample and pupils with atte…

2019

In this study, we examined self-regulatory efficacy and sources of self-efficacy (mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, social persuasion and physiological/emotional states) and the relationships between self-efficacy and its sources among elementary school pupils. Two groups were compared: a population sample (PS, N = 1284) and pupils with difficulties in attention and executive functions (AED, N = 61). Data gathered from self-report questionnaires indicated that pupils in the PS group had more positive efficacy beliefs and mastery experiences and fewer negative physiological/emotional states than the AED group. Analyses showed strong connections between sources and self-regulatory e…
