Abstract European populations of the Large Blue Butterfly Maculinea arion have experienced severe declines during the 20th century, especially in the northern part of the species’ range. This endangered lycaenid butterfly needs two resources for development: flower buds of specific plants ( Thymus spp., Origanum vulgare ), on which young caterpillars briefly feed, and red ants of the genus Myrmica , whose nests support caterpillars during a prolonged final instar. Speciation of sponges in Baikal-Tuva region: an outline

Lake Baikal is known for its high percentage of endemic fauna and flora. The most abundant sessile animal taxa in the littoral zone of Baikal are the photosymbiotic sponges. These endemic sponges are grouped to the family Lubomirskiidae and are separated, based on molecular data, from the cosmopolitan family Spongillidae Gray 1867. In the present review, recent data on the potential driving forces of the rapid speciation in Lake Baikal have been unified. Whereas there is some evidence that FA of sexual ornaments is negatively associated with immune function, studies concerning FA and immune function in non-ornamental traits are absent. On the infracommunity structure of adult cestodes in freshwater fishes.

The distribution–co-occurrence and exchange of adult cestode species in two fish communities (the Bothnian Bay and Lake Yli-Kitka both in Finland) was studied. Coexistence of two or more mature cestode species in the same fish host population was zero for all fish species studied (33) except pike in the Bothnian Bay and whitefish in the lake. It was found that 60% of the fish species studied in the Bothnian Bay and 80% of the fish species studied from Lake Yli-Kitka harboured only 1 mature cestode species. A newCentaureaspecies (Asteraceae) from Mt Sakar, South-eastern Bulgaria

A new species of Centaurea, C. sakarensis, known from a single locality north-east of the village of Lessovo on Mt Sakar, is described and illustrated. It belongs to C. sect. Acrolophus, and its morphologically closest relative is C. cariensis Boiss., a Turkish endemic from western and south-western Anatolia. The new species is currently known from a single population of about 1000 individuals, growing on open stony calcareous places, at 475 m a.s.l., and should be classified as Critically Endangered, (B1ab[i, ii, iii]+2ab [i, ii, iii]).

Population dynamics of oxiclinal species in lake Arcas-2 (Spain)

‘Oxiclinal’ rotifer species show high concentrations just above the oxic-anoxic interface in the hypolimnion of some lakes. The stratification of their populations is best shown by sampling at close depth intervals and quantifying their densities by the Utermohl technique. With this technique we were able to count males which otherwise pass through filters and more accurately count egg production.
