Programming of neural progenitors of the adult subependymal zone towards a glutamatergic identity by Neurogenin2

2017

ABSTRACTWhile the adult subependymal zone (SEZ) harbors pools of distinct neural stem cells that generate different types of GABAergic interneurons, a small progenitor population in the dorsal SEZ expresses Neurog2 and gives rise to glutamatergic neurons. Here we investigated whether SEZ progenitors can be programmed towards glutamatergic neurogenesis through forced expression of Neurog2. Retrovirus-mediated expression of Neurog2 induced the glutamatergic neuron lineage markers Tbr2 and Tbr1 in cultured SEZ progenitors which subsequently differentiated into functional glutamatergic neurons. Likewise, retrovirus-mediated expression of Neurog2 in dividing SEZ progenitors within the adult SEZ …

Making it More Sensitive

2011

About a decade ago, the prevailing wisdom was that conventional risk factors explained only approximately half of the risk for a myocardial infarction or stroke. Consequently, efforts to identify novel risk factors were undertaken to improve cardiovascular risk prediction. The hypothesis that inflammation is a central contributor to atherothrombosis has stimulated sustained efforts to characterize the specific molecules and pathways that may be involved and to identify biomarkers in humans that enable detection of underlying inflammatory activation to improve cardiovascular risk prediction. Ridker et al1 pioneered this work and reported that systemic low-grade inflammation assessed by measu…

Should We Screen for Helicobacter pylori to Prevent Gastric Cancer?

2007

Although the strategy for Helicobacter pylori infection management is well defined and quite well followed in a number of situations, including peptic ulcer disease, the issue of H. pylori screening and eradication in the general population still remains. The following debate attempts to find the answer of whether or not H. pylori screening should be performed in the asymptomatic population for preventing gastric cancer. As yet, there is no final evidence-based consensus about the need to screen for H. pylori in order to decrease the incidence of gastric cancer.

Non-endodontic periapical lesions clinically diagnosed as endodontic periapical lesions: A retrospective study over 15 years

2021

Background This study aimed to provide the frequency and demographic data of non-endodontic periapical lesions clinically misdiagnosed as endodontic periapical lesions from a Southeast Asian population over a 15-year period. Material and methods A retrospective study was conducted from departmental archives between 2005 and 2019. Cases clinically diagnosed as endodontic periapical lesions were retrieved. Then, cases with a histopathological diagnosis of non-endodontic periapical lesion were selected. Demographic data of non-endodontic periapical lesions were recorded. Radiographic features of cases with available radiographs were analyzed. Results Of 1,566 cases clinically diagnosed as endo…

Primary percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty for Acute Myocardial Infarction in patients not included in randomized studies

1999

Abstract Patients with acute myocardial infarction included in randomized trials comparing primary percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (pPTCA) with thrombolysis represent a special subgroup of patients with a low event rate. Patients excluded from these trials represent a variety of different subgroups, with different patient characteristics and possibly different clinical event rates. Primary PTCA was performed in 491 consecutive patients with acute myocardial infarction in the prospective multicenter observational Maximal Individual Therapy in Acute Myocardial Infarction trial. They were divided into the following groups: group I, patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria of t…

Low-density-lipoprotein peak particle size in a Mediterranean population

2003

Background The predominance of small, dense low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles (‘LDL phenotype B’) has been associated with a three-fold increased risk of myocardial infarction, but the feasibility of the identification of small, dense LDL as independent predictors of coronary artery disease risk in population studies remains questioned. Design We evaluated the LDL peak particle size and its relation with other established risk factors for coronary heart disease in a group of 156 randomized subjects living on the Mediterranean island of Ustica (71 males and 85 women, range of age 20–69 years), representing approximately 30% of the total population. Results The prevalence of LDL phenoty…

Delirium: From the Operating Room to the ICU

2020

Delirium is a transitory and reversible syndrome which is potentially avoidable; nevertheless represents the most common acute encephalic dysfunction in critically ill patients. Despite this population being daily treated by anesthesiologists in the operating rooms and by critical care physicians in the Intensive care unit, delirium remains an underdiagnosed condition that is associated with a significative increase in morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, it is associated with higher costs and length of stay.

Sustained Responses and Resistance to Imatinib Mesylate in the First 173 Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Patients Accrued by the SCREEN Multicenter Study: F…

2009

Abstract Abstract 4276 Introduction Imatinib mesylate (IM) has shown unprecedented effectiveness in the treatment of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) patients (pts) in the chronic phase of the disease. As most of the data concerning the efficacy of the drug derive either from a single sponsored trial or from single institution reports, we decided to accrue all CML pts diagnosed in the Italian region of Sicily to the observational SCREEN (Siciliy CML Regional Enterprise) study, to evaluate the hematological, cytogenetic and molecular responses of this unselected population to IM. Patients and Methods Although the study is still ongoing, 173 consecutive CML pts have been enrolled between Januar…

Humeral Shaft Fractures

2014

Humeral shaft fractures account for approximately 7 % of all fractures in adults. They occur after direct trauma such as traffic accidents or after indirect, rotational trauma in sports accidents or falls at home. There are two peaks of incidence in the adult population: the young male and the older female. The first patient typically is the victim of high-energy trauma with multiple lesions, a more severe humeral fracture type and concomitant soft tissue damage. The latter patient suffers a solitary lesion and is the victim of a low-energy accident such as a fall from a standing or sitting position. The fracture type is then simple and there is no or minimal soft tissue damage. As pain is …

Epidemiologie von Infektionskrankheiten bei Kindern in den alten Ländern der Bundesrepublik Deutschland*

1991

This study was done to describe the epidemiology of infectious diseases in children living in the old countries of the Federal Republic of Germany. After an intensive search for literature, data about notifiable diseases, data from insurance agencies and a random test from 700 charts of a general pediatrician were reviewed and analysed in a standardized way for their validity. No single review article on this topic was found. Estimates about the frequency of some specific infectious diseases as well as data about notifiable diseases proved to be unreliable and not useful from a scientific point of view. Published insurance data suggested, that infectious diseases may contribute comparativel…
