Positron annihilation characterization of free volume in microand macro-modified Cu0.4Co0.4Ni0.4Mn1.8O4ceramics
2016
Free volume and pore size distribution size in functional micro and macro-micro-modified Cu0.4Co0.4Ni0.4Mn1.8O4 ceramics are characterized by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy in comparison with Hg-porosimetry and scanning electron microscopy technique. Positron annihilation results are interpreted in terms of model implication positron trapping and ortho-positronium decaying. It is shown that free volume of positron traps are the same type for macro and micro modified Cu0.4Co0.4Ni0.4Mn1.8O4 ceramics. Classic Tao-Eldrup model in spherical approximation is used to calculation of the size of nanopores smaller than 2 nm using the ortho-positronium lifetime.

Negative differential resistance and threshold-switching in conical nanopores with KF solutions
2021
Negative differential resistance (NDR) phenomena are under-explored in nanostructures operating in the liquid state. We characterize experimentally the NDR and threshold switching phenomena observed when conical nanopores are immersed in two identical KF solutions at low concentration. Sharp current drops in the nA range are obtained for applied voltages exceeding thresholds close to 1 V and a wide frequency window, which suggests that the threshold switching can be used to amplify small electrical perturbations because a small change in voltage typically results in a large change in current. While we have not given a detailed physical mechanism here, a phenomenological model is also includ…
Experimental investigation of the effect of moisture on the acoustic properties of lightweight substrates used in green envelopes
2021
International audience; Substrates are used in green walls and roofs to supply air and water to the roots of the growing plants. These substrates are porous with micropores which store water and macropores which facilitate drainage and air entry. Effect of moisture on acoustic absorption is studied for two lightweight substrates: coir dust and perlite. Measurement of dry and moistened substrates are conducted to evaluate their effective speed of sound, attenuation, characteristic impedance, compressibility and density between 100 Hz and 1000 Hz using an impedance tube and the three microphone-two load method. Effect of moisture on these quantities is found to depend strongly upon the intera…
Chronospeciation of uranium released in soil during a long-term DU shell weathering experiment.
2021
Corrosion process was investigated of depleted uranium (DU) ammunition fragments buried for three years in aerobic soils continuously irrigated with water. The continuing corrosion process was triggered through formation of soluble uranyl oxyhydrate phases such as metaschoepite and becquerelite, which were identified by micro-Raman and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. The soil was not amended by phosphates and, therefore, no uranyl phosphates were found as corrosion products on the DU surfaces by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A speciation modelling at high temporal sequence (chronospeciation approach) indicated that the abundant Fe oxyhydroxides in the soil immobilized the U(IV) released…
Influence of microporosity distribution on the mechanical behavior of oolithic carbonate rocks.
2015
Abstract The mechanical behavior of oolithic carbonate rocks was investigated for selected rocks with two different microstructural attributes: uniform (UP) and rimmed (RP) distribution of microporosity within ooids. These oolithic carbonate rocks are from the Oolithe Blanche formation, a deep saline aquifer in the Paris Basin, and a possible target for CO2 sequestration and geothermal production. Samples of similar physical properties (porosity, grain diameter, cement content) but different microporosity textures were deformed under triaxial configuration, in water saturated conditions, at 28 MPa of confining pressure, 5 MPa of pore pressure and at a temperature of 55 °C. During the experi…
Biological and microclimatic monitoring for conservation of cultural heritage: a case study at the De Rossi room of the Palatina library in Parma
2019
Biological particles in heritage-related indoor environments (museums, libraries, archives) represent a hazard to artifacts (biodeteriogenic action), operators and visitors’ health. The aim of the study was to evaluate environmental biological contamination and microclimate conditions in different periods of the year in De Rossi room of the historical Palatina Library in Parma. Microclimatic measurements were recorded continuously for a period ranging from 11 to 17 days in: January–February, May and September 2017. Monitoring of bacterial and fungal contamination was performed for air by active and passive sampling and by nitrocellulose membranes on shelves and manuscripts. Microorganisms w…
A new highly diverse palynoflora from the Lower Devonian Nogueras Formation of the Iberian Peninsula
2015
AbstractA new well-preserved spore assemblage has been discovered from the Lower Devonian Nogueras Formation of Mezquita de Loscos (Teruel Province, north-eastern Spain). The palynoflora includes 34 spore species belonging to 20 genera, among which 14 are new for the locality, e.g. Apiculiretusispora, Brochotriletes, Cirratriradites, Iberoespora, Knoxisporites and Verrucosisporites. The assemblage is mainly composed of trilete spores, while tripapillate and monolete forms are also observed. An early Pragian age is suggested for the fossil site. Specimens of Latosporites ovalis, a species previously well-documented only from the late Pragian–Emsian of Saudi Arabia and Brazil, are found in th…
Woodland key habitats in preserving polypore diversity in boreal forests: Effects of patch size, stand structure and microclimate
2016
Abstract Woodland key-habitats (WKHs) are set-asides in managed forests that are conceived to maintain specific aspects of forest biodiversity and they are widely used in Northern European countries. WKHs are often quite small (from 0.1 to a few hectares) and thus it is unclear if they can maintain biodiversity. We studied the effects of WKH size, microclimate and forest structure on species richness and composition of polypores, a group of wood-decaying fungi that has become threatened due to clear-cut forestry. The WKHs studied varied in size between 0.05 and 3.6 ha, and the control forests from 6.5 to 44.7 ha. Patch size and the volumes of logs and standing dead trees significantly affec…
The effect of buffer strip width and selective logging on streamside polypore communities
2020
Preserving streamside forest habitats or buffer strips is considered to reduce forestry-related biodiversity loss in commercial forest landscapes. However, it is still unclear what type of management in and near streamside forests can be undertaken without compromising their biodiversity and natural change through succession. Using a before–after, control–impact study design, we tested the impacts of forested buffer strips (15 or 30 m wide, with or without selective logging), preserved after clear-cutting, on the changes of polypore communities in streamside boreal forests in Finland. Manipulations in 28 sites produced four treatment classes, the community compositions of which were compar…
