Characterization of Alternaria alternata Isolates from Tangerine Hybrids Affected by Brown Spot in Italy

Alternaria brown spot, caused by Alternaria alternata, is the most important disease of tangerines and their hybrids worldwide, including Italy. The disease represents, for some susceptible citrus cultivar, a limiting factor in profitable cultivation. The results of the characterization of A. alternata isolates obtained from lesions on leaves and fruits of Fortune, Nova and Winola hybrids and Valencia sweet orange, collected in two groves located in Calabria and Sicily, is reported. Sideritis italica (Miller) Greuter et Burdet is a widespread Mediterranean Lamiacea. Essential oils from S. italica flowerheads and leaves were extracted by hydrodistillation and then tested for their potential allelopathic activity against Raphanus sativus L. (Magnoliophyta) and the moss Tortula muralis (Hedw.) (Bryophyta), two organisms already tested for allelopathy, and against two bryophytes growing in the same environment as S. italica: the moss Bryum capillare Hedw. and the liverwort Lunularia cruciata (L.) A new species ofPythiumisolated from burgundian vineyards and its antagonism towardsBotrytis cinerea, the causative agent of the grey mould disease

During the course of an investigation on the pythiaceous fungi occurring in burgundian vineyards, three isolates of Pythium were found, all of which were characterised by spherical to lemoniform, proliferating sporangia. Only one out of these three isolates produced sexual characters (S-12) after prolonged incubation, but their asexual structures, temperature growth relationship and molecular characteristics were identical. Saprolegnia-type internal proliferation of the sporangia, and Phytophthora-type lemoniform, papillate sporangia were characteristic of all the three isolates. The taxonomic position of Roesleria subterranea

The genus Roesleria was introduced with the single species Roesleria hypogaea (current name: R. subterranea) by Thümen in 1877. The species was originally described from roots of grapevine and recognised as a facultative root-rotting parasite. The mazaediate ascoma with evanescent asci led to the assumption that Roesleria would be an ally of mazaediate lichens. In this study we calculate 28S, 18S as well ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rDNA phylogenies. These data indicate that Roesleria is closely related to Hymenoscyphus (Helotiales). In contrast to other members of the Helotiales, the ascospores of Roesleria are passively released, and a distinct apical apparatus cannot be observed by LM. Electron optic …

Distributions of the growth rate of the germ tubes and germination time of Penicillium chrysogenum conidia depend on water activity

The effects of water activities for sporulation (a(wsp)) and germination (a(wge)) on the distributions of the growth rate of the germ tubes (mu) and the germination time (t(G)) of Penicillium chrysogenum conidia were determined by monitoring the length of the same germ tubes throughout the experiments automatically. No relationship between the individual t(G)'s and mu's could be established. Irrespective of the water activity for germination, mu was greater and t(G) was less for conidia produced at 0.95a(wsp) than that at 0.99a(wsp). The dynamics of sporulation and zoosporogenesis of Phytophthora infestans in a naturally infected crop of potato cv. Maris Bard and on potted plants of the same cultivar infected artificially with the same fungus are described. Development of sporangiophores and sporangia was synchronous after induction. Migration of several nuclei from the sporangiophore into the sporangium initial was followed by nuclear division, then by degeneration of a proportion of the nuclei. Lag time for germination of Penicillium chrysogenum conidia is induced by temperature shifts.

In the environment, fungal conidia are subject to transient conditions. In particular, temperature is varying according to day/night periods. All predictive models for germination assume that fungal spores can adapt instantaneously to changes of temperature. Incidence and clinical significance of cardiac side effects of extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL) were prospectively analysed for 85 patients (26 men, 59 women; mean age 44 [17-81] years) with cholecystolithiasis (n = 70) or choledocholithiasis (n = 15). 24-hour ECG monitoring was undertaken on the day of treatment.
