Ureteral injury during left colectomy for cancer: Laparoscopic management. A case report
2020
Abstract Introduction Iatrogenic ureteral lesions may occur after any abdominal and pelvic surgery. They are severe and can affect renal function and even vital prognosis. This study aimed to determine the clinical aspects and the therapeutic approaches of a lower third injury of the ureter during a laparoscopic left colectomy. Presentation of case An 81 year-old-man with left-sided colon cancer underwent laparoscopic left colectomy. During surgery there was a continuous full-thickness solution of the left ureter for which an end-to-end ureteral anastomosis was performed. In the postoperative period the patient underwent multiple urological and radiological interventional procedures due to …
Evaluation of the Oxiris Membrane in Cardiogenic Shock Requiring Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Support: Study Protocol for a Single Center, Sin…
2021
Background: Veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) is the rescue treatment proposed to patients with refractory cardiogenic shock. The VA-ECMO implantation promotes inflammation and ischemia-reperfusion injuries through the VA-ECMO flow, causing digestive mucosa barrier disrupture and inducing translocation of bacterial wall components—Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) with further inflammation and circulatory impairment. LPS is a well-studied surrogate indicator of bacterial translocation. Oxiris membrane is a promising and well-tolerated device that can specifically remove LPS. The main study aim is to compare the LPS elimination capacity of Oxiris membrane vs. a non-absorban…

Optimizing Nanopore-based microbiome sequencing for characterizing biotechnologically-relevant ecosystems
2022

The microstructure of bentonite clay
2018
Bentonite is a common clay having many applications. One of them will be in the spent nuclear fuel repository, as a buffer material between host rock and the canisters containing the radioactive waste. This application has high requirements for the material used, ranging from, among others, appropriate mechanical properties, chemical stability, fine porous structure to sufficient hydraulic conductivity. The material should maintain its properties over time as the life span of the repository is hundreds of thousands years. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the structure of bentonite clay in a condition similar to expected in the repository. The research focused mainly on the pore str…
Acute heart failure due to giant left atrium: remote ECLS implantation for interhospital transfer and bridging to decision
2018
AbstractBackgroundRemote extracorporeal life support (ECLS) implantation and mobile ECLS are increasingly applied to enable the treatment of patients with refractory heart failure at specialized care centers. Giant left atrium (GLA) is a rare cause but may lead to acute and devastating heart failure.Case reportAcute heart failure that gave rise to a prolonged period of out-of-hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation in a patient who underwent remote ECLS implantation was found to have resulted from a GLA of impressive dimensions. There having no reasonable option for immediate surgical therapy, the patient was successfully bridged to recovery with a view to subsequent heart transplantation.Co…
Hyvää ruokaa ja monta kulttuuria : singaporelaisten arkikokemus monikulttuurisuudesta
2010
Tutkimuksessa olen käyttänyt triangulatiivista eli moniaineistoista metodia. Aineistoni koostuu eri tavoin toteutetuista tutkimushaastatteluista, joista osan toteutin kasvotusten ja osan virtuaalisia menetelmiä, kuten internet-kyselyä hyödyntäen, sekä tekemästäni kenttätyömatkasta Singaporeen. Singapore on moniku…
Standardisation of methods for assessing mould germination: a workshop report.
2006
International audience; The first workshop on predictive mycology was held in Marseille, France, 2–4 February 2005 under the auspices of the French Microbiological Society. The purpose of the workshop was to list the different techniques and definitions used by scientists for assessing mould germination and to evaluate the influence of the different techniques on the experimental results. Recommendations were made when a large consensus was obtained. In order to facilitate the study of germination, alternative methods to microscopic examination were examined.
