Influence of pressure on ultrasonic cavitation activity in room temperature ionic liquids: An electrochemical study
2019
Abstract This paper provides proofs of the respective contributions of dissolved gases and solvent vapor on cavitation activity in sonoreactors. This activity can be detected by electrochemistry because the fluctuating events measured at the electrode surface are only linked to physical effects of cavitation. As ionic liquids present very low volatilities, their vaporization is reduced, and cavitation bubbles only depend on the presence of gases. Then, cavitation activity may be trigged by reactor atmosphere control. Applying severe depression within an irradiated ionic liquid medium contributes to removing dissolved gases, thus quenching cavitation activity. A specific sonoelectrochemical …
Influence of laser–target interaction regime on composition and properties of surface layers grown by laser treatment of Ti plates
2009
Surface laser treatment of commercially pure titanium plates was performed in air using two different Nd : YAG sources delivering pulses of 5 and 35 ns. The laser fluence conditions were set to obtain with each source either yellow or blue surface layers. Nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) was used to quantify the amount of light elements in the formed layers. Titanium oxinitrides, containing different amounts of oxygen and nitrogen, were mainly found, except in the case of long pulses and high laser fluence, which led to the growth of titanium dioxide. The structure of the layers was studied by x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. In addition, reflectance spectra showed the transition fr…
The Luminescence Properties of ZnO:Al Nanopowders Obtained by Sol-gel, Plasma and Vaporization-Condensation Methods
2007
ZnO nanocrystals were synthesized and characterized by XRD and SEM methods. The luminescence spectra and decay kinetics were studied under pulsed laser excitation (266 nm, 8 ns). ZnO and ZnO:Al powders were prepared by sol-gel and plasma chemical synthesis. These powders were used as a raw material for the SPVD (Solar Physical Vapour Deposition) process. In this way, the vaporisation-condensation phenomenon (VC) led to the formation of ZnO whiskers and nanopowders. The luminescence properties of the VC nanopowders were studied and compared to those displayed by the raw material. The Al dopant, present in the raw powders as a solid solution and ZnAl2O4 precipitates, was only present as Al io…
VAPORIZATION CHARACTERISTICS OF ETHANOL AND 1-PROPANOL DROPLETS AT HIGH TEMPERATURES
2012
International audience; A detailed description of the vaporization of an isolated droplet has been carried out in this experimental study aimed at investigating ethanol and another aliphatic alcohol, 1-propanol. The characterization of the vaporization phenomenon is necessary for this liquid fuel to develop efficient design of injection systems for propulsion and power generation. Particularly, the vaporization rates and their dependency on temperature, important features for modeling and design, are explored for both ethanol and 1-propanol at intermediate to high temperatures. The experimental setup consists of a pressure chamber in which the furnace, the droplet formation, the droplet sup…
Numerical support for laser welding of zinc-coated sheets process development
2002
Abstract A lap welding process for zinc-coated sheets has been developed with the help of numerical simulations. This process has been improved and is now compatible with industrial requirements. The zinc boiling point (1180 K) is lower than the steel melting point (1800 K). Consequently, a violent boiling of zinc in melted steel produces serious defects in the seam. To get round this difficulty, we choose to consider a two-spots process: the first spot vaporizes the zinc coating at the interface; the second one welds the sheets. Previously, we develop a numerical model that permits a process parameters choice and limits the plan of experimentations. The zinc ablation spotlight shape is cho…
Ages and stratigraphical architecture of late Miocene deposits in the Lorca Basin (Betics, SE Spain): New insights for the salinity crisis in margina…
2020
International audience; Unlike most Neogene basins of the Betic Cordillera where the Salinity Crisis is dated to the Messinian, a contradictory Tortonian dating was proposed for evaporites of the Lorca Basin. As a consequence, complex structural models have been proposed in the literature to explain this discrepancy in the timing of evaporites. In order to integrate the Lorca Basin into the geological context of the western Mediterranean domain during the Late Miocene, new sedimentological and stratigraphical studies coupled with new dating were performed, which allow us to propose a Messinian age for both diatomite-bearing deposits and evaporites of the Lorca Basin. These new ages challeng…
The onset of the Messinian salinity crisis: Insights from Cyprus sections
2009
Abstract The Neogene basins of Southern Cyprus provide a good opportunity to improve the knowledge of the paleoenvironmental changes involved in the triggering of the Messinian evaporite deposition in the Mediterranean, and of their chronology, which is still questionable with regards to the parameters responsible for the triggering of the salinity crisis. It is still difficult to discriminate the individual effects of tectonics, climate, global sea-level changes. In Cyprus, considerable progress has been made on the events leading to the MSC, since the 70's, in high-resolution microfossil biostratigraphy, astrochronology, cyclostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy. A study of the Tochni sec…
Sea level and climate forcing of the Sr isotope composition of late Miocene Mediterranean marine basins
2014
Sr isotope records from marginal marine basins track the mixing between seawater and local continental runoff, potentially recording the effects of sea level, tectonic, and climate forcing in marine fossils and sediments. Our 110 new Sr-87/Sr-86 analyses on oyster and foraminifera samples from six late Miocene stratigraphic sections in southern Turkey, Crete, and Sicily show that Sr-87/Sr-86 fell below global seawater values in the basins several million years before the Messinian Salinity Crisis, coinciding with tectonic uplift and basin shallowing. 87Sr/86Sr from more centrally located basins (away from the Mediterranean coast) drop below global seawater values only during the Messinian S…
The end of the Messinian Salinity Crisis in the western Mediterranean: insights from the carbonate platforms of south-eastern Spain.
2010
International audience; How the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) ended is still a matter of intense debate. The Terminal Carbonate Complex (TCC) is a late Messinian carbonate platform system that recorded western Mediterranean hydrological changes from the final stages of evaporite deposition till the advent of Lago-Mare fresh- to brackish water conditions at the very end of Messinian times. A multidisciplinary study has been carried out in three localities in south-eastern Spain to reconstruct the history of TCC platforms and elucidate their significance in the MSC. Overall, this study provides evidence that the TCC formed following a regional 4th order water level rise and fall concomitant…
Late Messinian to Early Pliocene paleoenvironmental changes in the Melilla Basin (NE Morocco) and their relation to Mediterranean evolution
2003
Abstract Three major paleoenvironmental changes have been recognized during the late Miocene to Early Pliocene in the Melilla Basin (Northeastern Morocco) and compared with the regional events that affected the Mediterranean hydrology during this crucial period. The first change was the definitive conversion of the restricted marine conditions that prevailed since the end of the reef carbonate complex into lacustrine environments; this occurred around 5.8 Ma which is earlier than in the rest of the Mediterranean where the Lower Evaporites were still forming. These lacustrine settings display great similarities with the Lago-Mare environments that started in the Mediterranean during the depo…
