Aporia della contemporaneità e medievalità

2014

Clinical and MRI measures to identify non-acute MOG-antibody disease in adults

2022

Abstract MRI and clinical features of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)-antibody disease may overlap with those of other inflammatory demyelinating conditions posing diagnostic challenges, especially in non-acute phases and when serologic testing for MOG antibodies is unavailable or shows uncertain results. We aimed to identify MRI and clinical markers that differentiate non-acute MOG-antibody disease from aquaporin 4 (AQP4)-antibody neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder and relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis, guiding in the identification of patients with MOG-antibody disease in clinical practice. In this cross-sectional retrospective study, data from 16 MAGNIMS centres were i…

Comparing tacrolimus ointment and oral cyclosporine in adult patients affected by atopic dermatitis: a randomized study

2004

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic allergic inflammatory disease, which manifests itself with eczematous skin lesions. OBJECTIVE: We compared the clinical efficacy of tacrolimus ointment (0.1%) given twice a day and oral cyclosporine (3 mg/kg) given once daily. Rescue medication for itching included cetirizine 10-20 mg (equal to one or two tables). METHODS: Thirty patients, aged 13-45 years (mean+/-SD 27.1+/-10.9), with a history of moderate-to-severe AD were randomized to treatments, 15 patients for each treatments. Assessment of efficacy was based on SCORAD, on scores of daily itching, erythema, interference with sleep, due to the skin condition and days without use of cetiri…

A (1->3)-beta-D-glucan recognition protein from the sponge Suberites domuncula. Mediated activation of fibrinogen-like protein and epidermal growth f…

2004

Sponges (phylum Porifera) live in a symbiotic relationship with microorganisms, primarily bacteria. Until now, molecular proof for the capacity of sponges to recognize fungi in the surrounding aqueous milieu has not been available. Here we demonstrate, for the demosponge Suberites domuncula (Porifera, Demospongiae, Hadromerida), a cell surface receptor that recognizes (1--3)-beta-D-glucans, e.g. curdlan or laminarin. This receptor, the (1--3)-beta-D-glucan-binding protein, was identified and its cDNA analysed. The gene coding for the 45 kDa protein was found to be upregulated in tissue after incubation with carbohydrate. Simultaneously with the increased expression of this gene, two further…

Porifera Lectins: diversity, physiological roles and biotechnological potential

2015

An overview on the diversity of 39 lectins from the phylum Porifera is presented, including 38 lectins, which were identified from the class of demosponges, and one lectin from the class of hexactinellida. Their purification from crude extracts was mainly performed by using affinity chromatography and gel filtration techniques. Other protocols were also developed in order to collect and study sponge lectins, including screening of sponge genomes and expression in heterologous bacterial systems. The characterization of the lectins was performed by Edman degradation or mass spectrometry. Regarding their physiological roles, sponge lectins showed to be involved in morphogenesis and cell intera…

Kinetic Characterization of Secretory Transport of a New Ciprofloxacin Derivative (CNV97100) across Caco-2 Cell Monolayers**This work has been submit…

2002

The kinetics of transport of a new fluoroquinolone antibiotic (CNV97100) and its analogs were characterized using the Caco-2 cell culture model. Unidirectional permeabilities of these analogs were greater (p < 0.05) than that of ciprofloxacin. The absorptive permeabilities (P(AB)) of 4'-N-substituted analogs (CNV97101-104) were 400-600% greater, whereas the secretory permeability (P(BA)) was 25-80% greater than unsubstituted analogs because CNV97101-104 were poor substrates for efflux transporters (efflux ratio approximately 1). The transport of compounds without 4'-N-substitution (i.e., ciprofloxacin and CNV97100) favored secretion (efflux ratio approximately 4). Further characterization o…

Modulation of protein phosphorylation by natural products

2002

Studies carried out to determine the influence of phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of proteins in a variety of physiological events are of increasing interest. The activity of kinases and phosphatases and their respective inhibition by endogenous mediators and by pharmacological agents regulates a huge number of biochemical pathways involved in cellular proliferation, apoptosis, inflammation, hormonal activity, and gene transcription, amongother processes. This article focuses on the recently described natural products able to interfere negatively with the activity of serine/threonine and tyrosine kinases. These agents are classified, according to theirbiosynthetic origin and chemical …
