Abstract Insolation-driven oceanographic changes are well documented in the Mediterranean deep-sea record and reflect episodes of high precipitation and/or freshwater discharge. In the shallow-water record, however, changes in relative sea-level and sea surface temperature are usually regarded as prime controls on Miocene coral reefs, whereas pulses of freshwater influx represent a hitherto unrecognized factor influencing their growth, ecological structure and geometry. Abstract Coral skeletons are archives of chemical proxies which enable paleoenvironmental reconstructions to be made at subannual resolution. Stable oxygen isotope ( δ 18 O) ratios of these archives reflect sea surface temperature (SST) as well as the δ 18 O composition of ambient seawater. The δ 18 O seawater composition is not only controlled by global ice build-up, but river discharge and the hydrological balance of evaporation and precipitation, all influencing sea surface salinity (SSS), also play an important role in marginal seas. none 16 si Although outcropping rarely in Italy, evaporite (gypsum and anhydrite) karst has been described in detail since the early 20th century. Gypsum caves are now known from almost all Italian regions, but are mainly localised along the northern border of the Apennine chain (Emilia Romagna and Marche), Calabria, and Sicily, where the major outcrops occur. Recently, important caves have also been discovered in the underground gypsum mines in Piedmont. During the late 80s and 90s several multidisciplinary studies were carried out in many gypsum areas, resulting in a comprehensive overview, promoting further research in these special karst regions. This paper reports the investigation carried out on the occurrence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia (oo)cysts in water samples of two municipal treatment plants, and in surface water and ground water wells of the province of Palermo. The wastewater samples taken before and after treatment process were assayed over the course of one year Giardia cysts were detected in all samples throught the year at higher concentration levels than Cryptosporidium oocysts, with a peak observed in spring. The overall removal efficiency of (oo)cysts in the treatment plants was about of 90%. Viroporins are small, α-helical, hydrophobic virus encoded proteins, engineered to form homo-oligomeric hydrophilic pores in the host membrane. Viroporins participate in multiple steps of the viral life cycle, from entry to budding. As any other membrane protein, viroporins have to find the way to bury their hydrophobic regions into the lipid bilayer. Once within the membrane, the hydrophobic helices of viroporins interact with each other to form higher ordered structures required to correctly perform their porating activities. Dissociated cells from marine demosponges retain their proliferation capacity if they are allowed to form special aggregates, the primmorphs. On the basis of incorporation studies and septin gene expression, we show that Fe3+ ions are required for the proliferation of cells in primmorphs from Suberites domuncula. In parallel, Fe3+ induced the expression of ferritin and strongly stimulated the synthesis of spicules. This result is supported by the finding that the enzymatic activity of silicatein, converting organosilicon to silicic acid, depends on Fe3+.
