LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTING IN SPAIN

1996

This paper provides an analysis of the present situation concerning local government accounting in Spain following recent reforms introduced in the early nineties. It presents a picture of the main features of Spanish local finance—budgeting and accounting, the measurement focus, and the basis of accounting—and analyses the financial reporting system adopted by Spanish municipalities. This is followed by a critical review of several weak points in the reform which in the author's view will encourage further developments.

Systematic review of chewing simulators : reality and reproducibility of in vitro studies

2020

Background The aim of this systematic review was to analyze the types of human chewing simulator described in scientific literature. Material and Methods An electronic search was conducted in the databases PubMed, Embase and Scopus. The search strategy included 10 search terms: “in vitro”; “dental materials”; “shear strength”; “fatigue fracture”; “bite force”; “prosthetic materials”; “chewing simulator”; “chewing machine”; “simulated mastication”; and “dental wear simulator.” Two researchers worked independently to assess the titles and abstracts of the articles. The quality of the in vitro trials selected was evaluated by means of the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials scale. Resul…

Polar/Ionizable Residues in Transmembrane Segments: Effects on Helix-Helix Packing

2012

The vast majority of membrane proteins are anchored to biological membranes through hydrophobic alpha-helices. Sequence analysis of high-resolution membrane protein structures show that ionizable amino acid residues are present in transmembrane (TM) helices, often with a functional and/or structural role. Here, using as scaffold the hydrophobic TM domain of the model membrane protein glycophorin A (GpA), we address the consequences of replacing specific residues by ionizable amino acids on TM helix insertion and packing, both in detergent micelles and in biological membranes. Our findings demonstrate that ionizable residues are stably inserted in hydrophobic environments, and tolerated in t…

Effects of sulindac sulfide on the membrane architecture and the activity of gamma-secretase.

2007

gamma-Secretase is a membrane-embedded multi-protein complex that catalyzes the final cut of the Alzheimer's disease-related amyloid precursor protein (APP) to amyloid-beta peptides of variable length (37-43 amino acids) via an unusual intramembrane cleavage. Recent findings propose that some commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have the ability to modulate specifically gamma-secretase activity without inhibiting the enzyme as a whole. These drugs may shift the processing of APP from the longer amyloid-beta 42 peptide towards shorter, less fibrillogenic and less toxic amyloid-beta species. We hypothesize that gamma-secretase activity, as an enzyme that is strictly as…

Analyzing measurement invariance of the students’ engagement instrument brief version:the cases of Denmark, Finland, and Portugal

2017

The promotion of students’ engagement with school is an internationally acknowledged challenge in education. There is a need to examine the structure of the concept of student engagement and to discover the best practices for fostering it across societies. That is why the cross-cultural invariance testing of students’ engagement measures is highly needed. This study aimed, first, to find the reduced set of theoretically valid items to represent students’ affective and cognitive engagement forming the Brief-SEI (brief version of the Student Engagement Instrument; SEI). The second aim was to test the measurement invariance of the Brief-SEI across three countries (Denmark, Finland, and Portug…

The association between board gender diversity and financial reporting quality, corporate performance and corporate social responsibility disclosure …

2017

Purpose (mandatory) Companies, politicians, the mass media, legislators, scholars and society in general have shown a growing interest in how board gender diversity affects a firm’s decisions. This concept has been developed because some nations have introduced voluntary policies to regulate and increase the proportion of female directors on corporate boards. Thus, the aim of this study is to review previous research based on board gender diversity as a corporate governance mechanism and its effect on some firms’ business decisions: Financial reporting quality (FRQ), firm performance and corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting. Design/methodology/approach (mandatory) We focus on age…

Patterns of Safety Incidents in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

2021

Introduction: Safety incidents preceding manifest adverse events are barely evaluated in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). This study aimed at identifying frequency and patterns of safety incidents in our NICU.Methods: A 6-month prospective clinical study was performed from May to October 2019 in a German 10-bed level III NICU. A voluntary, anonymous reporting system was introduced, and all neonatal team members were invited to complete paper-based questionnaires following each particular safety incident. Safety incidents were defined as safety-related events that were considered by the reporting team member as a “threat to the patient's well-being” which “should ideally not occur agai…

Quantum chemical meta-workflows in MoSGrid

2014

Quantum chemical workflows can be built up within the science gateway Molecular Simulation Grid. Complex workflows required by the end users are dissected into smaller workflows that can be combined freely to larger meta-workflows. General quantum chemical workflows are described here as well as the real use case of a spectroscopic analysis resulting in an end-user desired meta-workflow. All workflow features are implemented via Web Services Parallel Grid Runtime and Developer Environment and submitted to UNICORE. The workflows are stored in the Molecular Simulation Grid repository and ported to the SHIWA repository. © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Direct electrochemical detosylation of tetratosylcyclen to cyclen with carbon cathodes

2005

The electrochemical detosylation of tetratosylcyclen to cyclen (1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane) in aprotic solvents at a carbon cathode was investigated both in a bench-scale batch electrochemical reactor and in a continuous batch recirculation reaction system equipped with a parallel-plate electrochemical cell. Yields and faradaic efficiency in cyclen, respectively, of 80 and 55% were obtained in the bench-scale reactor working in acetonitrile. It was found that the faradaic efficiency in cyclen depends on the competition between the reduction of the tetratosylcyclen and parasitic processes as the reduction of the tetraalkylammonium cations present in the supporting electrolyte. We have ob…
