It focuses on the period of 1974–76, known as the revolutionary phase, when a series of progressive political programmes, forms of direct democracy, collective mobilisation and widespread grass-roots initiatives emerged in the aftermath of the dictatorial regime. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan suomalaisten ja portugalilaisten lastentarhanopettajien näkökulmia varhaiskasvatuksen laadusta. Kasvatusta ei koskaan toteuteta tyhjiössä vaan se luodaan vallitsevan kulttuurin ja siinä toimivien yksilöiden kesken. Toimintaperiaatteet ja käytännöt ovat ajallisesti, paikallisesti ja sosiaalisesti rakentuneita, jolloin niin varhaiskasvatus kuin sen laadun määritelmätkin vaihtelevat eri kulttuureissa. Afrikka on ainoa maanosa, missä suurin osa lapsista aloittaa koulun vieraalla kielellä. Mosambikissa ensimmäinen äidinkieleen perustuva kaksikielisen perusopetuksen kokeiluhanke alkoi vuonna 1993. Kaksikielistä opetusta (bantukieli ja portugali) on sittemmin järjestetty eri puolilla maata, ja sen tulokset ovat olleet myönteisiä. Tällä hetkellä päättäjillä vaikuttaa olevan sekä poliittista tahtoa että käytännön keinoja opetuksen laajentamiseksi koko maan kattavaksi. Oman äidinkielen opetusta on järjestetty Suomessa jo yli neljäkymmentä vuotta, mutta ei ole paljon tietoa siitä, mitä luokkahuoneiden sisällä tapahtuu. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastellaan, miten espanjaa ja portugalia opetetaan pääkaupunkiseudulla ja mitä mieltä oppilaat ja vanhemmat ovat siitä. Vaikka kyseessä on tapaustutkimus kahdesta kielestä, tuloksista voitaneen tehdä se johtopäätös, että opetuskäytänteet vaihtelevat suuresti opettajasta riippuen. Yhteistä on se, että opetus ei ole kovin suunnitelmallista, joskin joka tunnilla pyritään kehittämään monin tavoin kielitaidon eri osa-alueita ja välittämään kulttuuritietoa.
