The Euro and European identity: The Spanish and Portuguese case

Abstract The European Union proposes a potential social identity that Spain and Portugal wish to have as part and parcel of their process of modernisation and economic growth. The Euro is the symbol of this desire. As this study shows, in the process of changing to the new currency the pro-European attitudes are far more advanced than any real information citizens may have. As a result of this, the desire to be a European citizen is expressed in the new currency or any other symbol of identity that may strengthen this particular image. The trade-enhancing effect of immigration networks: New evidence on the role of geographic proximity

Abstract We use migration-trade data from Italian, Portuguese and Spanish provinces to examine the importance of geographic proximity in the effectiveness of ethnic networks on bilateral trade. Empirical findings from the gravity model show that the migration-trade link is clearly in-province: exports from a province to a country do not receive any stimuli from immigrants from this country living outside of the province, once we control for country–province time-invariant fixed effects.

The present evidence-based guidelines are focused on the use of device-assisted enteroscopy in the management of small-bowel diseases. A panel of experts selected by the Spanish and Portuguese small bowel study groups reviewed the available evidence focusing on the main indications of this technique, its role in the management algorithm of each indication and on its diagnostic and therapeutic yields. This article examines the decision of the CJEU in Brisal and KBC Finance Ireland (Case C-18/15) of 13 July 2016. Following a Portuguese reference for a preliminary ruling, the Court's decision provides further clarification on the permissibility of withholding taxation within the European Union. In relation to interest, the Court held that non-resident taxpayers may be subject to withholding taxes (even if comparable residents pursuing the same activity are not) but that non-residents may nevertheless not be taxed on gross income (when comparable residents are taxed on net profits) and are, therefore, entitled to deduct expenses directly connected to their business activity.
Venture capitalists' decision-making in small equity markets: a case study using participant observation

Despite significant academic research undertaken in the field of venture capital decision-making process, the dimension and maturity of equity market has not yet been considered as an important contextual factor. Aiming at developing an understanding on how venture capitalists (VCs) select early-stage projects in small equity markets, a pilot study using participant observation technique has been conducted in a Portuguese venture capital firm.
