Effect of Footstep Vibrations and Proprioceptive Vibrations Used with an Innovative Navigation Method

2017

This study proposes to investigate the effect of adding vibration feedback to a navigation task in virtual environment. Previous study used footstep vibrations and proprioceptive vibrations in order to decrease the cyber-sickness and increase the sense of presence. In this study, we experiment the same vibration modalities but with a new navigation method. The results show that proprioceptive vibrations do not impact the sense of presence neither the cyber-sickness while footstep vibrations increase sense of presence and decrease in a certain way cyber-sickness. Tracking Hands in Interaction with Objects: A Review

2017

Markerless vision-based 3D hand motion tracking is a key and popular component for interaction studies in many domains such as virtual reality and natural human-computer interfaces. While this research field has been well studied in the last decades, most approaches have considered the human hand in isolation and not in action or in interaction with the environment or the other articulated human body parts. Employing contextual information about the surrounding environment (e.g. the shape, the texture, and the posture of the object in the hand) can remarkably constrain the tracking problem. The goal of this survey is to develop an up-to-date taxonomy of existing vision-based hand tracking m…

Real-Time Human Pose Estimation from Body-Scanned Point Clouds

2015

International audience; This paper presents a novel approach to estimate the human pose from a body-scanned point cloud. To do so, a predefined skeleton model is first initialized according to both the skeleton base point and its torso limb obtained by Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Then, the body parts are iteratively clustered and the skeleton limb fitting is performed, based on Expectation Maximization (EM). The human pose is given by the location of each skeletal node in the fitted skeleton model. Experimental results show the ability of the method to estimate the human pose from multiple point cloud video sequences representing the external surface of a scanned human body; being r…

Three-dimensional Fuzzy Kernel Regression framework for registration of medical volume data

2013

Abstract In this work a general framework for non-rigid 3D medical image registration is presented. It relies on two pattern recognition techniques: kernel regression and fuzzy c-means clustering. The paper provides theoretic explanation, details the framework, and illustrates its application to implement three registration algorithms for CT/MR volumes as well as single 2D slices. The first two algorithms are landmark-based approaches, while the third one is an area-based technique. The last approach is based on iterative hierarchical volume subdivision, and maximization of mutual information. Moreover, a high performance Nvidia CUDA based implementation of the algorithm is presented. The f…

Wireless Sensor Networks for Condition Based Maintenance: Security and Reliability

2009

Masteroppgave i informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi 2009 – Universitetet i Agder, Grimstad In this thesis we present the requirements needed for a Condition Based Main- tenance (CBM) solution by using Wireless Sensor Networks(WSN). The sensor network needs to be secure and reliable to be implemented in a CBM solution, hence we have chosen the popular ZigBee protocol to see how it fulfill the reliability requirements of transmission delay, lost packets and battery consumption. The security requirements is based on the CIA(confidentiality, integrity, availability) triad for security objectives, and in this thesis we will give a general overview of the security mechanisms used in ZigBee t…

Estimating head pose and state of facial elements for sign language video

2014

In this work we present methods for automatic estimation of non-manual gestures in sign language videos. More specifically, we study the estimation of three head pose angles (yaw, pitch, roll) and the state of facial elements (eyebrow position, eye openness, and mouth state). This kind of estimation facilitates automatic annotation of sign language videos and promotes more prolific production of annotated sign language corpora. The proposed estimation methods are incorporated in our publicly available SLMotion software package for sign language video processing and analysis. Our method implements a model-based approach: for head pose we employ facial landmarks and skins masks as features, a…

Do orthotactics and phonology constrain the transposed-letter effect?

2008

Transposing two internal letters of a word produces a perceptually similar item (as in cholocate). To determine the precise nature of the encoding of letter position within a word, it is important to examine the role of orthography and phonology in the transposed-letter effect. Experiment 1 examined whether transposed-letter effects are affected by the legality of the letter transposition in a masked priming paradigm (e.g., comsos-COSMOS vs. vebral-VERBAL; ‘ms’ is an illegal bigram in Spanish). Results showed a greater transposed-letter priming effect when the transposed bigram was illegal than when it was legal. In Experiment 2, we examine the role of phonology by exploiting the context-de…

Can CANISO activate CASINO? Transposed-letter similarity effects with nonadjacent letter positions

2004

Nonwords created by transposing two adjacent letters (i.e., transposed-letter (TL) nonwords like jugde) are very effective at activating the lexical representation of their base words. This fact poses problems for most computational models of word recognition (e.g., the interactive-activation model and its extensions), which assume that exact letter positions are rapidly coded during the word recognition process. To examine the scope of TL similarity effects further, we asked whether TL similarity effects occur for nonwords created by exchanging two nonadjacent letters (e.g., canisoCASINO) in three masked form priming experiments using the lexical decision task. The two nonadjacent transpos…
