Lipolysis in isolated epididymal adipocytes from genetically obese Zucker rat treated with 3,5,3'-L-triiodothyronine.

1990

Abstract. Glycerol released by isolated epididymal adipocytes was measured in 6-8 weeks old genetically obese (fa/fa) and lean (C.c.a/-) male Zucker rats, ip treated or not treated with T3 (0.46, 2.3 and 4.6 nmol/100 g in a single injection or 4.6 nmol · (100 g)−1 · day−1 for 5 days). In the non-treated rats, lipolysis was less stimulated by adrenalin or isoproterenol in obese than in lean rats, whereas it was stimulated by theophylline up to the same level in both kinds of rats. A single injection of the T3 (highest dose) increased isoproterenol-induced lipolysis in the lean but not in the obese rats. The 5-day T3 treatment caused a stimulation of the adrenalin- or isoproterenol-induced li…

Muscle resting and TGF-β inhibitor treatment prevent fatty infiltration following skeletal muscle injury

2019

Background/Aims: Skeletal muscle injuries are the most common type of injury occurring in sports, and investigating skeletal muscle regeneration as well as understanding the related processes is an important aspect of the sports medicine field. The process of regeneration appears to be complex and precisely orchestrated, involving fibro-adipogenic progenitors (FAPs) which are a muscle-resident stem cell population that appears to play a major role in abnormal development of fibrotic tissue or intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT). Our present study aims to investigate whether muscle resting or endurance exercise following muscle injury may change the behavior of FAPs and subsequently impact t…

Wharton’s Jelly Mesenchymal Stem Cells as Candidates for Beta Cells Regeneration: Extending the Differentiative and Immunomodulatory Benefits of Adul…

2010

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are uniquely capable of crossing germinative layers borders (i.e. are able to differentiate towards ectoderm-, mesoderm- and endoderm-derived cytotypes) and are viewed as promising cells for regenerative medicine approaches in several diseases. Type I diabetes therapy should potentially benefit from such differentiated cells: the search for alternatives to organ/islet transplantation strategies via stem cells differentiation is an ongoing task, significant goals having been achieved in most experimental settings (e.g. insulin production and euglycaemia restoration), though caution is still needed to ensure safe and durable effects in vivo. MSC are obtainable in …

Planetary activism at the end of the world: Feminist and posthumanist imaginaries beyond Man

2022

We are currently experiencing a planetary crisis that will lead, if worst comes to worst, to the end of the entire world as we know it. Several feminist scholars have suggested that if the Earth is to stay livable for humans and nonhumans alike, the ways in which many human beings – particularly in the wealthy parts of the world, infested with Eurocentrism, (neo)colonialism, neoliberalism, and capitalism – inhabit this planet requires radical, ethical, and political transformation. In this article, we propose that feminist theory, particularly feminist posthumanities, and Black feminist and decolonial thought, together with creative practices such as writing, have much to contribute to tra…

Abstract: The construction of the Brazilian nation went through the period of slavery. Once it was abolished, black people were not included effectively in society. Since the …

Searching for long-lived particles beyond the Standard Model at the Large Hadron Collider

2020

Particles beyond the Standard Model (SM) can generically have lifetimes that are long compared to SM particles at the weak scale. When produced at experiments such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, these longlived particles (LLPs) can decay far from the interaction vertex of the primary proton–proton collision. Such LLP signatures are distinct from those of promptly decaying particles that are targeted by the majority of searches for new physics at the LHC, often requiring customized techniques to identify, for example, significantly displaced decay vertices, tracks with atypical properties, and short track segments. Given their non-standard nature, a comprehensive overview of LLP…

Building up an ecologically sustainable and socially desirable post-COVID-19 future

2021

AbstractCOVID-19 crisis has emphasized how poorly prepared humanity is to cope with global disasters. However, this crisis also offers a unique opportunity to move towards a more sustainable and equitable future. Here, we identify the underlying environmental, social, and economic chronic causes of the COVID-19 crisis. We argue in favour of a holistic view to initiate a socio-economic transition to improve the prospects for global sustainability and human well-being. Alternative approaches to “Business-As-Usual” for guiding the transition are already available for implementation. Yet, to ensure a successful and just transition, we need to change our priorities towards environmental integrit…

SIMULATING SPIN MODELS ON GPU: A TOUR

2012

The use of graphics processing units (GPUs) in scientific computing has gathered considerable momentum in the past five years. While GPUs in general promise high performance and excellent performance per Watt ratios, not every class of problems is equally well suitable for exploiting the massively parallel architecture they provide. Lattice spin models appear to be prototypic examples of problems suitable for this architecture, at least as long as local update algorithms are employed. In this review, I summarize our recent experience with the simulation of a wide range of spin models on GPU employing an equally wide range of update algorithms, ranging from Metropolis and heat bath updates,…

Economics as a polymorphic discursive construct: heterodoxy and pluralism

2012

PurposeWhat do economists talk about? This seemingly innocent interrogation conceals a broader and innovative research programme, with the potential to renew the reflection on heterodox economics in a post‐crisis scenario. The aim of this paper is to show that convergence between language for specific purposes and economics is possible, so as to single out the genesis and the emergence of critical economic discourse.Design/methodology/approachAfter underlining the necessary collaboration between language and subject‐matter specialists, the paper addresses the question of the problematic use of economics textbooks in English‐speaking countries. Then, it deals with the fascinating question of…

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors as regulators of lipid metabolism; tissue differential expression in adipose tissues during cold acclimat…

2004

Brown (BAT) and white (WAT) adipose tissues play a key role in the body energy balance orchestrated by the central nervous system. Hibernators have developed a seasonal obesity to respond to inhospitable environment. Jerboa is one of the deep hibernator originated from sub-desert highlands. Thus, this animal represents an excellent model to study cold adaptation mechanism. We report that the adipogenic factor PPARgamma exhibits a differential expression between BAT and WAT at mRNA level. A specific induction was only seen in WAT of pre-hibernating jerboa. Interestingly, PPAR beta/delta is specifically induced in BAT and brain of pre-hibernating jerboa, highlighting for the first time the po…
