Settore AGR/14 - PedologiaThe purpose of this work is todevelop from spatial information such as weather and soil characteristics a study capable ofhighlighting the sustainability of irrigation management of three hypothetical experimental plots identified in the territory of the sub-basin Iudeo Bucari located western Sicily in the province of Trapani. There are three vineyards that represent for morphological characteristics and management the entire sub-basin which is one of the areas most under vines in Sicily. The aim is to assess the sustainability of irrigation management in terms of saving energy through the application of the model FAO 56 fetlock water balance. This study lays the foundation for the preparation of action plans developed to reverse negative trends in environmental resource management which are susceptible to degradation processes.

Ground-level predation on artificial caterpillars indicates no enemy-free time for lepidopteran larvae

2017

Lepidoptera is one of the most diverse orders of insects, their larvae are very abundant in many habitats, and frequent prey of various predators. To decrease predation risk, caterpillars developed several means of defence, among them timing their activity to avoid predators (seeking enemy-free time). Although the enemy-free time hypothesis is often invoked to explain caterpillar behaviour, empirical evidence for it is scarce. We tested whether such enemy-free time exists in a temperate forest by comparing predation pressure on artificial caterpillars during day and night on the ground in forest fragments in Denmark. We found a high predation rate, 23.9% d(-1), and higher predation rate at …

Performance Assessment of Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile Restoration Experiment on Dead matte Twelve Years after Planting—Structural and Functional M…

2021

Following the restoration of natural conditions by reducing human pressures, reforestation is currently considered a possible option to accelerate the recovery of seagrass habitats. Long-term monitoring programs theoretically represent an ideal solution to assess whether a reforestation plan has produced the desired results. Here, we report on the performance of a 20 m2 patch of Posidonia oceanica transplanted on dead matte twelve years after transplantation in the Gulf of Palermo, northwestern Sicily. Photo mosaic performed in the area allowed us to detect 23 transplanted patches of both regular and irregular shape, ranging from 0.1 to 2.7 m2 and an overall surface close to 19 m2. Meadow d…

RISK ASSESSMENT OF EXPOSURE TO CHEMICAL AGENTS IN THE WORKPLACE

2016

The study in question is the chemical risk assessment relating to chemicals used at the SERIMANT Military Authority of Palermo, Supplies and Maintenance Section, in order to ensure the protection of the safety and health of workers. Chemicals used in the barracks were analyzed; data collected anonymously from 32 male workers exposed to test substances for at least five years; their work tasks analyzed; established health and laboratory findings extrapolated from medical records of each worker, as well as search for specific representative metabolites of intoxication to the relevant substances; compared the different indicators of toxicity parameters and processed statistics. The levels of 1…

Effect of Exercise on Fatty Acid Metabolism and Adipokine Secretion in Adipose Tissue

2019

Increased physical activity is an optimal way to maintain a good health. During exercise, triacylglycerols, an energy reservoir in adipose tissue, are hydrolyzed to free fatty acids (FAs) which are then released to the circulation, providing a fuel for working muscles. Thus, regular physical activity leads to a reduction of adipose tissue mass and improves metabolism. However, the reduction of lipid reservoir is also associated with many other interesting changes in adipose tissue FA metabolism. For example, a prolonged exercise contributes to a decrease in lipoprotein lipase activity and resultant reduction of FA uptake. This results in the improvement of mitochondrial function and upregul…

Current Perspectives on Adult Mesenchymal Stromal Cell-Derived Extracellular Vesicles: Biological Features and Clinical Indications.

2022

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) constitute one of the main mechanisms by which cells communicate with the surrounding tissue or at distance. Vesicle secretion is featured by most cell types, and adult mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) of different tissue origins have shown the ability to produce them. In recent years, several reports disclosed the molecular composition and suggested clinical indications for EVs derived from adult MSCs. The parental cells were already known for their roles in different disease settings in regulating inflammation, immune modulation, or transdifferentiation to promote cell repopulation. Interestingly, most reports also suggested that part of the properties of pare…

ADIPOSE TISSUE-TARGETED STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION FOR INSULIN RESISTANCE-RELATED CNS DEFICITS

Compelling evidence indicates that Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) may possibly share a common pathological origin, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. T2D is a known risk factor for AD and insulin resistance (hallmark of T2D) has been extensively documented in AD patients. Notably, insulin is important for learning and memory due to its role in LTP and LTD modulation. Adipose tissue (AT) dysfunction is a risk factor for T2D, in fact elevated levels of free fatty acids are prodromal to insulin resistance and have been reported in AD brains, as well. In this study, I used a mouse model (AtENPP1Tg mouse) that recapitulates typical characteristics of huma…

Injectable hydrogel formulations to host adipose stem cell spheroids for stemness maintenance and bone and cartilage regeneration

2021

Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) represent a great promise for tissue regeneration as fat is a very abundant source of stem cells (1) and owing to their ability to self-renew and differentiate into specific tissue types (2). In general, they are usually cultured as two-dimensional (2D) adherent monolayers, not representative of the in vivo condition, often entailing lower cell viability and, more in general, a lower “cell quality” in terms of regenerative potential (3, 4). When ASCs are cultured in low adhesion flasks and with a suitable culture medium, they aggregate in the form of three-dimensional spheroids (SASCs). The incorporation of these spheroids into injectable, in-si…
