Vector Well-posedness of Optimization Problems and Variational Inequalities

2008

In this paper, a new sufficient condition is given in order a vector variational inequality is well-posed. This condition uses generalized convexity assumptions and can be also used in order to prove the well-posedness of a vector optimization problem.

Frequency-dependent flight activity in the colour polymorphic wood tiger moth

2015

Predators efficiently learn to avoid one type of warning signal rather than several, making colour polymorphisms unexpected. Aposematic wood tiger moth males Parasemia plantaginis have either white or yellow hindwing coloration across Europe. Previous studies indicate that yellow males are better defended from predators, while white males have a positively frequency-dependent mating advantage. However, the potential frequency-dependent behavioural differences in flight between the morphs, as well as the role of male-male interactions in inducing flying activity, have not been previously considered. We ran an outdoor cage experiment where proportions of both male morphs were manipulated to t…

SIRM–SIC appropriateness criteria for the use of Cardiac Computed Tomography. Part 1: Congenital heart diseases, primary prevention, risk assessment …

2021

AbstractIn the past 20 years, Cardiac Computed Tomography (CCT) has become a pivotal technique for the noninvasive diagnostic work-up of coronary and cardiac diseases. Continuous technical and methodological improvements, combined with fast growing scientific evidence, have progressively expanded the clinical role of CCT. Recent large multicenter randomized clinical trials documented the high prognostic value of CCT and its capability to increase the cost-effectiveness of the management of patients with suspected CAD. In the meantime, CCT, initially perceived as a simple non-invasive technique for studying coronary anatomy, has transformed into a multiparametric “one-stop-shop” approach abl…

Mitigation of urban flooding: A simplified approach for distributed stormwater management practices selection and planning

2005

The urbanization process and the hydraulic insufficiency of drainage systems are two of the most common causes of urban flooding. In some technical regulations, distributed stormwater management practices (DSMPs) are regarded as a solution for urban flooding problems. They can prevent the formation of runoff, dispose of it locally, or dampen its peak before it reaches the drainage system. Due to their diffuse localization and the wide number of available solutions, the evaluation of their efficiency in terms of flood reduction is very difficult. The methodology proposed in the present paper relies on the concept that the mitigation effects of DSMPs can be expressed as a function of the chan…

CUDA-BLASTP: Accelerating BLASTP on CUDA-enabled graphics hardware

2011

Scanning protein sequence database is an often repeated task in computational biology and bioinformatics. However, scanning large protein databases, such as GenBank, with popular tools such as BLASTP requires long runtimes on sequential architectures. Due to the continuing rapid growth of sequence databases, there is a high demand to accelerate this task. In this paper, we demonstrate how GPUs, powered by the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA), can be used as an efficient computational platform to accelerate the BLASTP algorithm. In order to exploit the GPU's capabilities for accelerating BLASTP, we have used a compressed deterministic finite state automaton for hit detection as wel…

Data from: Predators’ consumption of unpalatable prey does not vary as a function of bitter taste perception

2019

Many prey species contain defensive chemicals that are described as tasting bitter. Bitter taste perception is therefore assumed to be important when predators are learning about prey defenses. However, it is not known how individuals differ in their response to bitter taste, and how this influences their foraging decisions. We conducted taste perception assays in which wild-caught great tits (Parus major) were given water with increasing concentrations of bitter-tasting chloroquine diphosphate until they showed an aversive response to bitter taste. This response threshold was found to vary considerably among individuals, ranging from chloroquine concentrations of 0.01 mmol/l to 8 mmol/l. W…

Research data supporting "Social information use about novel aposematic prey is not influenced by a predator’s previous experience with toxins"

2019

This data is from the experiment investigating social avoidance learning in wild-caught great tits, conducted at Konnevesi Research Station in Central Finland during winter 2017. Sheet 1 (main data) contains data from the main avoidance learning experiment, including individual attributes (sex, age, weight etc.), experimental treatments and individuals foraging choices in the learning trials. Sheet 2 (preference test) contains data from the initial preference test of the symbols that were used in the experiment, and Sheet 3 (visibility test) data from the initial visibility test of the same symbols.

Automatic social distance estimation for photographic studies: Performance evaluation, test benchmark, and algorithm

2022

The social distancing regulations introduced to slow down the spread of COVID-19 virus directly affect a basic form of non-verbal communication, and there may be longer term impacts on human behavior and culture that remain to be analyzed in proxemics studies. To obtain quantitative results for such studies, large media and/or personal photo collections must be analyzed. Several social distance monitoring methods have been proposed for safety purposes, but they are not directly applicable to general photo collections with large variations in the imaging setup. In such studies, the interest shifts from safety to analyzing subtle differences in social distances. Currently, there is no suitabl…

Maintenance of variation in warning signals under opposing selection pressures

2008
