Remote Sensing Geometric Corrections
2016
This article reviews the different aspects of geometrical processing of remote sensing data, discussing error sources and methods to determine the transformation from the image acquisition geometry to the output cartographic product. Resampling methods are discussed to transform the input image to the output geometry. Several practical examples of remote sensing platforms are discussed, including satellite cases and airborne sensors. Validation of the resulting geometrical processed products is also discussed. Spatial mosaicking techniques and multitemporal composites used to produce multisource integrated products and advanced applications are finally considered, keeping a perspective on t…
A measurement-based trajectory model for drifted motions towards a target zone
2016
Trajectory models have numerous applications in the area of wiewlwss communications. The aim of this paper is to develop an empirical trajectory model for drifted motions. Recently, a highly flexible trajectory model based on the primitives of Brownian fields (TramBrown) was proposed by A. Borhani and M. Patzold. This paper provides an empirical proof for TramBrown using global positioning system (GPS) data collected from real life user traces drifting to a particular target point or a zone. The recorded location coordinates of the mobile user are processed to compute the total travelling length and the angle-of-motion (AOM) along the drifted trajectory. It is shown that the probability den…
Vineyard design supported by GPS application
2021
The innovative technologies of precision agriculture offer nowadays new applications in line with the needs of the wine sector. In hillside viticulture, within the same plot there are areas with different physical and chemical characteristics (lying, pH, active limestone, nutrients, etc.). This variability consequently influences the vigor of the vine which translates into a different production per single plant in terms of both yield and quality of the grapes. The aim of this study was to realize geo-referenced thematic maps by GPS application on a hilly plot covering about 6 hectares to be planted in a hedgerow trained vineyard for the production of quality grapes. The experimental tests …
Georeferenced cartography dataset of the La Fossa crater fumarolic field at Vulcano Island (Aeolian Archipelago, Italy): conversion and comparison of…
2011
The present study illustrates the procedures applied for the coordinate system conversion of the historical fumarole positions at La Fossa crater, to allow their comparison with newly acquired global positioning system (GPS) data. Due to the absence of ground control points in the field and on both the old Gauss Boaga and the new UTM WGS 1984 maps, we had to model the transformation errors between the two systems using differential GPS techniques. Once corrected, the maps show a residual Easting shifting, due to erroneous georeferencing of the original base maps; this is corrected by morphological comparative methods. The good correspondence between the corrected positions of the historical…
CAROLS campaigns 2009: First Results
2010
International audience; The CAROLS, L band radiometer, is built and designed as a copy of EMIRAD II radiometer of DTU team. It is a Correlation radiometer with direct sampling and fully polarimetric (i.e 4 Stockes). It will be used in conjunction with other airborne instruments (in particular the C-Band scatterometer (STORM) and IEEEC GPS system, Infrared CIMEL radiometer and one visible camera), in coordination with in situ field campaigns for SMOS CAL/VAL. The instruments are implemented on board the French research airplane ATR42. A scientific campaign with thirteen flights is realized over south-western France, Valencia site and Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean) in spring 2009. In order to…
Low-Cost Sensor Based on SDR Platforms for TETRA Signals Monitoring
2021
The paper presents the design and implementation of an electromagnetic field monitoring sensor for the measurement of the Terrestrial Truncked Radio (TETRA) signals using low-cost software defined radio (SDR) platforms. The sensor includes: an SDR platform, a Global Positioning System (GPS) module and a hardware control module. Several SDR platforms having different resolutions of the analog–digital converters were tested in the first phase. The control module was implemented in two variants: a fixed one, using a laptop, and a mobile one, using a Raspberry Pi. The tests demonstrate the following achieved performances: instantaneous acquisition band of 5.12 MHz
Finnish-Chinese intercultural negotiation : power positioning and search for common ground
2018
‘Rising China’ is a term that has come to refer to China’s march to being number one, the speed of its economic growth, and its investment around the world during last two decades. In Finland, government agencies have been established to promote investment, trade, and co-operation with China, while regional and local governments are also actively involved. Meanwhile, much of the world is now competing for the attention of China, so the power dynamic is tending to shift in favour of the Chinese. This developing context has been examined in previous studies primarily from the perspectives of politics, economics, and management studies. The overarching aim of this study is to investigate emerg…
The Voices of the Foreign Ministers: a Corpus-assisted Study of Ideological Positioning in the Language of Diplomacy
2012
“One of the major aims of a politician is to gain the people’s allegiance, to have them believe that the decisions that are being made are the right ones” (Wilson 1990: 76). The basic idea is that the way we see the world, think about it and act on it, is largely determined by how we 'frame' it, and this in turn may be influenced by our choice of rhetorical device. In the context of diplomacy, language choices, which carry significant communicative intent, are regularly made “to galvanize the audience to achieve a commonality of purpose” (Burhanudeen 2005: 37) through the enactment of specific linguistic mechanisms. This work is part of an ongoing research into register-specific features of…
Recipes of success : the case of pulp and paper industry 1989-2015
2017
Explaining the variation in competitive positioning actions across firms in the face of environmental change has long inspired debates in the field of strategic management. Despite the importance of these questions, little effort has been done to examine the complex interdependencies among industry, organizational attributes, and strategic actions that potentially underlie the organizational performance in one model without controlling one or more of the three factors. Most of the studies on competitive dynamics primarily have focused on independently exploring the effects of organizational characteristics or the industry structure on competitive actions and reactions, which, in turn, impac…
