Peer to Peer Equation Augmentation for an Altitude Aided GNSS Receiver
2010
This paper considers the possibility to integrate external altitude measurements with a Kalman based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver in a peer to peer scenario. The performance of such a system is investigated for different characteristics of the aiding measurement and for different degree of trust of the receiver upon the aiding measurement. The aiding measurement is obtained starting from the altitude measurements that the other peers in the network send to the aided user. The experiments highlight the need for a parameter that points out the effectiveness and the consistency of the computed aiding measurement. To this purpose, a reliability index is proposed, on the ba…
Labor Law and Technological Challenges
2021
Technology is changing the way in which workers are controlled. From video cameras to GPS, these technologies allow for constant monitoring of workers’ activities; however, recently two new forms of control have emerged. One consisting in giving customers a controlling role over workers’ performance and another, the “big data” (algorithms and artificial intelligence) which allow employers to process information about their employees in a far more efficient manner and at a much lower cost than has been the case until now. This makes it possible to profile workers automatically and even allows technology itself to replace human resources supervisors and managers and to make decisions that hav…
Italian inter-society expert panel position on radiological exposure in Neonatal Intensive Care Units.
2020
Abstract Background In the recent years, clinical progress and better medical assistance for pregnant women, together with the introduction of new complex technologies, has improved the survival of preterm infants. However, this result requires frequent radiological investigations mostly represented by thoracic and abdominal radiographs in incubators. This document was elaborated by an expert panel Italian inter-society working group (Radiologists, Paediatricians, Medical Physicists) with the aim to assist healthcare practitioners in taking choices involving radiation exposures of new-born infants and to provide practical recommendations about justification and optimization in Neonatal Inte…
Implementing an embedded system to identify possible COVID-19 suspects using thermovision cameras
2020
The main goal of this paper is to prove that by combining thermal vision cameras and image processing with many deep learning classification algorithms we developed an effective embedded system with high applicability in this critical period caused by COVID-19 pandemic disease. Using fixed and mobile thermal cameras we envisioned and developed a real time temperature screening capable of sending alarm signals over network or by SMS to local authorities along with multiple detection metrics such as the age, the gender, the facial emotion, the GPS location where the alarm went off, the temperature reading from the human face and also if the subject is wearing or not a medical face mask.
Multivariate analysis in the identification of biological targets for designed molecular structures: The BIOTA protocol
2013
In this work the new protocol BIOlogical Target Assignation (BIOTA) for the prediction of the biological target from molecular structures is proposed. BIOTA is based on the Principal Components Analysis (PCA) application on a matrix of ligands versus molecular descriptors. The application of BIOTA could allow to hypothesize the mechanism of action of a candidate drug prior to its biological evaluation or to repurpose old drugs. The protocol can be fine-tuned by choosing opportune targets (biological or not) and molecular descriptors, and it can be useful in every fields in with it is possible to collect set of compounds with known properties. The robustness of the protocol depends from diff…
“A Shameless Ideology of Shameless Women”: Positioning the Other in Social Media Discourse Surrounding a Women’s Rights Movement in Pakistan
2022
This study analyzes social media (YouTube) discourse related to Aurat March 2019, a women’s rights movement in Pakistan. Using a discourse analytical approach that draws on the premises of Positioning theory, the analysis reveals the following two major storylines from the data: “The women who stray from the path, and the men who will return them to it,” and “Islam under threat from the outside.” Social media platforms allow their users to express opinions in online spaces, often resulting in polarization and clustering of like-minded people in so-called echo-chambers. This study demonstrates how social media users actively participate in the discursive construction of the “other,” and how…
Earth's Surface Displacements from the GPS Time Series
2015
The GPS observations of both Latvian permanent GNSS networks - EUPOS®-Riga and LatPos, have been collected for a period of 8 years - from 2007 to 2014. Local surface displacements have been derived from the obtained coordinate time series eliminating different impact sources. The Bernese software is used for data processing. The EUREF Permanent Network (EPN) stations in the surroundings of Latvia are selected as fiducial stations. The results have shown a positive tendency of vertical displacements in the western part of Latvia - station heights are increasing, and negative velocities are observed in the central and eastern parts. Station vertical velocities are ranging in diapason of 4 mm/…
GPS Monitoring of the Scopello (Sicily, Italy) DGSD Phenomenon: Relationships Between Surficial and Deep-Seated Morphodynamics
2015
The Scopello area, which is located along the north-western Tyrrhenian coastal sector of the Sicilian chain (Italy), is widely affected by Deep-seated Gravitational Slope Deformation (DGSD) phenomena, which are mainly the result of a geomorphologic setting marked by the outcropping of an overthrust plan, limiting a brittle fractured carbonate slab, laid onto a ductile marly-clayey substratum. Due to the very advanced stage of the deformation phenomena, a coupled morphodynamic style has established between shallow landslides and DGSD phenomena, affecting the exhumed ductile substratum and the overlaying rigid dismantled slab, respectively. A GPS network was realized for monitoring the Scopel…
Computer-aided system for morphometric mandibular index computation (Using dental panoramic radiographs)
2012
Objective: We propose and validate a computer—aided system to measure three different mandibular indexes: cortical width, panoramic mandibular index and, mandibular alveolar bone resorption index. Study Design: Repeatability and reproducibility of the measurements are analyzed and compared to the manual estimation of the same indexes. Results: The proposed computerized system exhibits superior repeatability and reproducibility rates compared to standard manual methods. Moreover, the time required to perform the measurements using the proposed method is negligible compared to perform the measurements manually. Conclusions: We have proposed a very user friendly computerized method to measure …
Marketing Sri Lanka as an International Tourist Destination
2007
Masteroppgave i økonomi og administrasjon 2007 - Høgskolen i Agder, Kristiansand Within the last two decades Sri Lanka’s tourism industry has grown dramatically as one of the main foreign exchange earners and employment provider. Since Sri Lanka depends enormously on tourism for its growth and development, this paper provides an analysis of marketing efforts within the tourism industry in Sri Lanka for foreign tourists. In compliance with this trend, the purpose of this thesis and research is to review Sri Lanka as an international tourist destination and its current marketing activities in the tourism trade, to investigate the proper use of marketing efforts, and to suggest guidelines for …
