The role of 'the resources of the power hypothesis' in explaining the Spanish welfare state between 1975-1995

2000

There are two clearly differentiated parts to thiswork. The first consists of areview of the theoretical arguments that underliethe so-called `resourcesof power hypothesis'. That theory has beenused to explain the growth anddevelopment of the Welfare State in severalEuropean countries. The findingsof a number of empirical works backing up thattheory have also been includedin this review. The intention of the second partis to check the theory against theSpanish case between 1975 and 1995. The conclusionof this work is that if, besidesconsidering the ideological persuasion of theparty controlling the government, wetake into account the other relevant factorsencompassed by the theory, then the…

The Context(s) of Precaution: Ideological and Instrumental Appeals to the Precautionary Principle

2009

This article contributes to the clarification of the concept of precaution and its function in social debate. The authors compare the uses of precaution in science and technology—related conflicts (as indicated by an analysis of media reports on precaution) with data from a survey on precaution and the role of science in decision making. While the survey data confirm the existence of opposing “idealized” or “ideological” conceptualizations of the role of science in regulatory decisions, the analyzed media reports show an added degree of complexity on the level of social dynamics. The media analysis identifies an instrumental use of the concept of precaution in social debate, which is indep…

Promoting Wellbeing in Pregnancy: A Multi-component Positive Psychology and Mindfulness-Based Mobile App

2019

Pregnancy involves important changes for women of all ages: it is a time of physical and psychological change. Women may experience anxiety and negative emotions, which can negatively influence their wellbeing and make difficult their adaptation to the new role of mothers. Furthermore, poor mental well-being and difficulties in emotion regulation can negatively affect obstetric outcomes, development of the child and neonatal adaptation. The aim of this work is to present a new self-applied multi-component positive psychology- and mindfulness-based intervention (MPPMI) supported by a mobile App addressed to pregnant women. The core of this MPPMI is to combine traditional positive psychology …

Applying Positive Psychology to Prenatal Care Among Women from Different Cultures: A Web-Based Positive Psychology Intervention

2019

Pregnancy is a time of important changes and challenges for women. The nature, pervasiveness, and detrimental consequences of negative feelings during pregnancy have been extensively examined and documented within multicultural contexts. In the wake of Positive Psychology perspective, a growing number of studies have examined the potential benefits of positive aspects and protective factors that can influence the course of pregnancy and childbirth, as well as women’s perinatal and infant well-being. Although the importance of promoting well-being during the perinatal period has been demonstrated, research on Positive Psychology Interventions addressed to pregnant women is still in its infan…

English and French Modes of Regulation of the Education System : a comparison

2003

03069; International audience; This paper describes English and French modes of regulation of the educational system, stressing the contrast between them (regulation by process versus regulation by outcomes), while their goals and organisation prove rather more convergent over the last 30 years. It tries to assess the correspondence between those two ways of operating and what we know about the functioning of organisations like schools. From that point of view, the French system fits the economic theory of organisation less well than the English one, so that some contradictions and tensions are predictable. Last, it looks for some relationhip with indicators of effectiveness, equity and soc…

Mines and quarries production: A driver analysis of withdrawals in Italy

2020

Abstract The growing demand for non-energy mineral resources has determined relevant withdrawals as well as import-export flows. This paper aims to disentangle the drivers of raw non-energy mineral resources extraction in Italy. Using a new dataset of raw resources extracted from mines and quarries in the 21 Italian regions (19 regions and 2 autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano) for the period 2013–2016, our empirical analysis confirms the relevance of mining and quarrying producer price index as well as the manufacturing and construction sectors as main drivers. In line with the Hotelling (1931)'s theory, a positive relationship between m&q mineral resources extraction intensity and …

SUMOylation of Blimp-1 promotes its proteasomal degradation

2011

Abstract B lymphocyte induced maturation protein-1 (Blimp-1) is a transcription repressor of the Krueppel-like family. Blimp-1 plays important roles in developmental processes, such as of germ cells and hair follicle stem cells. In B lymphocytes Blimp-1 orchestrates the terminal differentiation into plasma cells. We discovered that Blimp-1 undergoes SUMOylation by SUMO-1. This SUMOylation is modulated by the SUMO protease SENP1. While Blimp-1 is relatively stable in 293T cells, a fusion with SUMO1 rendered it to rapid proteasomal degradation. Increase in SENP1 activity stabilized Blimp-1, while a decrease promoted its degradation. Our data indicate that SUMOylation of Blimp-1 regulates its …

Identification of new claudin family members by a novel PSI-BLAST based approach with enhanced specificity.

2006

In an attempt to develop a novel strategy for the identification of new members of protein families by in silico approaches, we have developed a semi-automated procedure of consecutive PSI-BLAST (Position-Specific-Iterated Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) searches incorporating identificiation as well as subsequent validation of putative candidates. For a proof of concept study we chose the search for novel members of the claudin family. The initial step was an iterated PSI-BLAST search starting with the PMP22_Claudin domain of each known member of the claudin family against the human part of the RefSeq Database. Putative new claudin domains derived from the converged list were evaluated …

"Omics" of HER2-positive breast cancer.

2013

HER2/neu amplification/overexpression is the only somatic mutation widely considered to be a marker of disease outcome and response to treatment in breast cancer. Pathologists have made large efforts to achieve accuracy in characterizing HER2/neu status. The introduction of transtuzumab contributed to development of additional measures to identify sensitive and resistant subclasses of HER2/neu-positive tumors. In this article, we describe the latest advances in HER2/neu status diagnostic assessment and the most relevant research emerging from ‘‘Omics’’ (genomics, epigenetics, transcriptomics, and proteomics) studies on HER2/neu-positive breast cancer. A large quantity of biomarkers from dif…
