Evaluation of the disease course of Italian children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis treated with etanercept: preliminary results in 772 patients
2014
The advent of biologic medications has considerably increased the potential for treatment benefit in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), with clinical remission being now achievable in a substantial proportion of patients.
Molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 subtype B in the Basque Country (Spain)
2012
The goal of this work was to study the HIV-1 subtype B epidemic in the Basque Country (Spain). For this, we used HIV samples submitted for genotypic testing of anti-retroviral resistance mutations from 2005 until 2008. Consequently, 2115 HIV-1 sequences comprising protease and retrotranscriptase (PR/RT) coding regions were analyzed. HIV transmission groups were identified by phylogenetic analysis. The 10 largest such groups were subsequently subjected to Bayesian phylogenetic and coalescent reconstructions, using a relaxed molecular clock model. The results obtained show that these groups have been long-standing: most of them were originated in the late 70s or early 80s, and none after the …
Iatrogenic lumbar artery pseudoaneurysm after lumbar transpedicular fixation: Case report
2019
Only a few cases of iatrogenic lumbar injury have been reported in the literature. A 58-year-old male with severe back pain was admitted to our department. The patient was qualified for the transpedicular stabilization with interbody fixation at L4/L5 and L5/S1 levels. On the first day after surgery, the patient was mobile and reported significant pain relief. He was discharged the same day. After 2 weeks, the patient returned with severe right lower abdominal pain and radicular pain in his right leg. He was administered to the Neurology Department where the presence of a lumbar muscle hematoma and lumbar artery pseudoaneurysm were discovered. He was transferred to the Vascular Surgery Depa…
Reproducibility of Skin Temperature Response after Cold Stress Test Using the Game Ready System: Preliminary Study
2021
The objective of this preliminary study was to determine the reproducibility of lower limbs skin temperature after cold stress test using the Game Ready system. Skin temperature of fourteen participants was measured before and after cold stress test using the Game Ready system and it was repeated the protocol in four times: at 9:00, at 11:00, at 19:00, and at 9:00 h of the posterior day. To assess skin temperature recovery after cold stress test, a logarithmic equation for each region was calculated, and constant (β0) and slope (β1) coefficients were obtained. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error (SE), and within-subject coefficient of variation (CV) were determined. No …
Evaluation of MRI and cannabinoid type 1 receptor PET templates constructed using DARTEL for spatial normalization of rat brains
2015
Purpose: Image registration is one prerequisite for the analysis of brain regions in magnetic-resonance-imaging (MRI) or positron-emission-tomography (PET) studies. Diffeomorphic anatomical registration through exponentiated Lie algebra (DARTEL) is a nonlinear, diffeomorphic algorithm for image registration and construction of image templates. The goal of this small animal study was (1) the evaluation of a MRI and calculation of several cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptor PET templates constructed using DARTEL and (2) the analysis of the image registration accuracy of MR and PET images to their DARTEL templates with reference to analytical and iterative PET reconstruction algorithms. Methods:…
A Knowledge-Based System for the Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease
2003
Therapies to slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease are most effective when applied in its initial stages. Therefore it is important to develop methods to diagnose the disease as early as possible. It is also desirable to establish standards which can be used generally by physicians who may not be experts in diagnosis of the disease. One possible method to obtain an early diagnosis is the evaluation of the glucose metabolism of the brain. In this paper we present a prototype of an expert system that automatically diagnoses Alzheimer’s disease on the basis of positron emission tomography images displaying the metabolic activity in the brain.
P–298 High prevalence of depression and anxiety in patients with endometriosis during the SARS-CoV–2 pandemic in Germany
2021
Abstract Study question The aim was to assess the prevalence of self-reported symptoms of depression and anxiety and the moderating factors influencing mental symptoms during the COVID–19 pandemic. Summary answer Endometriosis patients were at risk of developing mental disorders during the pandemic. Associated risk factors were: reduction of the social network and the employment status. What is known already Endometriosis is a disease affecting up to 10% of women of fertile age. The leading symptoms are sub- or infertility and chronic pain. Additionally, the psychological impact on womeńs life is enormous. Women with endometriosis show higher rates of depression, anxiety and emotional distr…
Composite femoro-tibial bypass as alternative solution in complicated revascolarization: Case report
2021
Introduction Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) in diabetic patients is a significant cause of Morbility. Long arterial occlusion in patient previously treated can require unusual and complex solution. Herein we report a case of complicated bypass in diabetic patient with history of bypass for bilateral popliteal aneurysm. Presentation of case A 51-year-old male, smoker, with hypertension and diabetes mellitus was referred to our hospital for rest pain in left limb and peripheral cyanosis. Ultrasound doppler (US) showed an occlusion after common femoral artery with patency of Anterior-tibial artery (ATA) two centimeters after the origin. The unavailability of adequate autologous conduit nece…
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo as a complication of osteotome expansion of the maxillary alveolar ridge.
2001
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a common vestibular end organ disorder characterized by short, often recurrent episodes of vertigo that are triggered by certain head movements in the plane of the posterior semicircular canals. BPPV may be idiopathic or secondary to a number of underlying conditions such as head injury, viral labyrinthitis, stapes surgery, and chronic suppurative otitis media. 1,2 The most commonly accepted theory postulates the development of BPPV as a result of canalolithiasis, 3 heavy, inorganic particles detached from the otoconial layer by degeneration or head trauma gravitate into the posterior semicircular canal and act as a plunger on the endolymph and…
