Peripheral Intravenous Access in Preterm Neonates during Postnatal Stabilization: Feasibility and Safety
2017
Background Current European Guideline for resuscitation recommends a centrally positioned umbilical venous catheter as the best option for administering necessary drugs. Especially in preterm infants, a frequently used alternative is the peripheral venous catheter. Methods Two randomized controlled studies were conducted at the Division of Neonatology, Medical University of Graz. During neonatal resuscitation, a standardized protocol was filled out by an uninvolved observer including time points after birth of all attempts of venous puncture, time point of successful venous puncture, and total number of needed attempts. Arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) and heart rate (HR) were measured usi…
Normalwerterstellung von Blutströmungsgeschwindigkeiten an der Arteria mesenterica superior bei Früh- und Reifgeborenen mit der Duplexsonographie
1994
In a prospective study blood flow velocity measurements were performed in 110 "healthy" newborn with duplex Doppler sonography in the superior mesenteric artery to obtain standard values. In 49 of these neonates 15, 30, and 45 minutes following feeding examinations were performed. Peak systolic flow velocity, end systolic flow velocity, time average flow velocity and time average maximum flow velocity were determined, the resistance and Pourcelot index as well as the volume blood flow were calculated. The children's gestational age was 27-42 weeks, the postnatal age was 2-68 days and the body weight was 920-4190 g. All measured blood flow velocities showed a synchronous relation to feeding …
Group psychoeducation with relaxation for severe fear of childbirth improves maternal adjustment and childbirth experience – a randomised controlled …
2014
Previous studies on the treatment of women with fear of childbirth have focused on the delivery mode. Women with fear of childbirth often suffer from anxiety and/or depression, and treatment therefore also needs to target postnatal psychological well-being and the early mother-infant relationship.Three hundred and seventy-one nulliparous women out of 4575 scored ≥100 in prospective screening (Wijma Delivery Expectancy Questionnaire, W-DEQ-A), indicating severe fear of childbirth. These women were randomised to psychoeducative group intervention with relaxation (n = 131; six sessions during pregnancy, one postnatal) or to conventional care (n = 240) by community nurses (referral if necessary…
The lizard cerebral cortex as a model to study neuronal regeneration
2002
The medial cerebral cortex of lizards, an area homologous to the hippocampal fascia dentata, shows delayed postnatal neurogenesis, i.e., cells in the medial cortex ependyma proliferate and give rise to immature neurons, which migrate to the cell layer. There, recruited neurons differentiate and give rise to zinc containing axons directed to the rest of cortical areas, thus resulting in a continuous growth of the medial cortex and its zinc-enriched axonal projection. This happens along the lizard life span, even in adult lizards, thus allowing one of their most important characteristics: neuronal regeneration. Experiments in our laboratory have shown that chemical lesion of the medial cortex…
POSTNATAL DEVELOPMENTAL CHANGES IN ENTERIC DOPAMINERGIC SYSTEM
2013
The postnatal period is a key period of life, characterized by the maturation of various organs and in particular of the gut. Currently, we have a poor understanding of the development of neurological and endocrine factors that control intestinal motility. Such knowledge can provide indications about the potency, efficacy, or therapeutic range of a drug in premature infants. Dopaminegic antagonists are often used as prokinetic drugs to treat impaired GI propulsion, although the role of the enteric dopaminergic system in the control of intestinal motility in neonatal vs adult has not been adequately addressed. In this view the aim of this study, was to examine, the functionality of the dopam…
L'ESAME CAPILLAROSCOPICO ORALE: NUOVA METODICA DIAGNOSTICA
2005
The morphological-functional study of microcirculation is of fundamental importance; in fact, the microvascular bed is directly involved both in autoimmune etiopathogenesis pathologies, and in acute and chronic inflammatory etiopathogenesis pathologies. Oral capillaroscopy is a very stimulating method for studying microcirculation, because of the possibility of studying small vessels in vivo by means of a microscope. Today, it is becoming more reliable thanks to the improvement of the observation tools (photography, videomicroscopy).
POSTNATAL MATURATION OF SEROTONIN SIGNALING SYSTEM IN MOUSE DUODENUM
2013
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: A plethora of study in animal neurodevelopmental models demonstrate that in central nervous system (CNS) temporal differences occur in the maturation of different neurotransmitter systems (Goldman-Rakic & Brown, 1982, Ehrlich et al., 2013). Although significant advances have been made in understanding the modifications in CNS, only primarily descriptive studies about the changes taking place in enteric nervous system (ENS), main regulator of gastrointestinal (GI) functions, have been underway. As the other organ systems, digestive system is still developing and maturing after birth and thus it is possible to speculate that the changes in the chemical coding of ENS may o…
Social withdrawal behavior in infants with cleft lip and palate: the psychological impact of the malformation on parents and on parents-infant relati…
2017
