Biodynamic behavior of the trunk and the abdomen during whole-body vibration

1989

Vibration strain may be defined as the sum of all reactions of the human being to vibration exposure. This also includes the biomechanical behavior of particular parts of the body. Knowledge about these reactions is necessary in the field of occupational health and ergonomics. Biomechanical models, experimental methods, and results are presented. It can be shown that under vibration exposure with different conditions (body posture, vibration direction), the body parts are in resonance at varying frequencies, mainly in a low frequency range.

Ability of short-time Fourier transform method to detect transient changes in vagal effects on hearts: a pharmacological blocking study.

2006

Conventional spectral analyses of heart rate variability (HRV) have been limited to stationary signals and have not allowed the obtainment of information during transient autonomic cardiac responses. In the present study, we evaluated the ability of the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) method to detect transient changes in vagal effects on the heart. We derived high-frequency power (HFP, 0.20–0.40 Hz) as a function of time during active orthostatic task (AOT) from the sitting to standing posture before and after selective vagal (atropine sulfate 0.04 mg/kg) and sympathetic (metoprolol 0.20 mg/kg) blockades. The HFP minimum point during the first 30 s after standing up was calculated and…

Effects of Schroth method and core stabilization exercises on idiopathic scoliosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

2022

Abstract Purpose Conservative approaches such as Schroth exercises and core stabilization exercises showed effective results in the treatment of idiopathic scoliosis. This study aimed to critically evaluate the magnitude effect of Schroth and core stabilization exercises using a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods This study has been developed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Statement. The following three databases were searched for articles collection: Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar. The key search terms were: Schroth exercise, core exercise, idiopathic scoliosis, Cobb angle, angle of trunk rotation, an…

Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Reliability of the Back Pain and Body Posture Evaluation Instrument (BackPEI) to the Spanish Adolescent Population

2021

The prevalence of back pain (BP) among children and adolescents has increased over recent years. Some authors advocate promoting back-health education in the school setting. It is therefore important to adopt a uniform suite of assessment instruments to measure the various constructs. The present study aimed to perform a cultural adaptation of a validated measurement instrument (BackPEI), beginning with a translation and cultural adaptation phase, followed by a second phase to test reliability using a test-retest design. The translation and cross-cultural adaptation were performed based on the guidelines. Reliability was tested by applying the questionnaire to 224 secondary school students,…

Studying Nonverbal Synchrony in Couple Therapy : Observing Implicit Posture and Movement Synchrony

2020

AbstractResearch on nonverbal synchrony (movement coordination) in psychotherapy has recently attracted increased attention. Nonverbal synchrony has been shown to relate to the therapeutic alliance and outcome. However, research on nonverbal synchrony in couple therapy remains scarce. In this study, we examined the therapy process of one couple in detail and created a coding scheme to depict posture and movement synchrony. In this case study, we found that the relationship between nonverbal synchrony and the therapeutic alliance was complex. During the therapy process, the amount of nonverbal synchrony varied, as did the participants’ evaluations of the alliance. In couple therapy nonverbal…

Transthoracic electrical impedance during extracorporeal hemodialysis in acute respiratory failure ("Shocked Lung syndrome").

1980

The alteration (delta Z0) of transthoracic electrical impedance (TEI) during extracorporeal hemodialysis (EHD) was investigated in two Groups of patients with acute renal and acute respiratory failure, that differed with respect to the severity of respiratory insufficiency. Group I had moderate respiratory failure (FiO2 0.31 +/- 0.10, PaO2 84 +/- 14 mmHg), and Group II had severe respiratory failure (FiO2 0.75 +/- 0.17, PaO2 77 +/- 14 mmHg). There was a significant correlation between increase in TEI (delta Z0) and decrease in body weight (delta BW) in each individual patient, but the slope of regression lines was remarkably flattened in Group II. In Group I, delta TEI was 1.9 +/- 0.9 omega…

Is backward disequilibrium in the elderly caused by an abnormal perception of verticality? A pilot study

2007

International audience; OBJECTIVE: We hypothesised that backward disequilibrium (BD), defined by a posterior position of the centre of mass with respect to the base of support, could be caused by a backward tilt in the perception of verticality. METHODS: The relationship between BD, the perception of verticality, and the history of falls in 25 subjects aged 84.5+/-7.4 years was analysed. An original ordinal scale, the BD scale (BDS), was used to quantify BD. Postural (PV) and haptic verticals (HV) were measured in sagittal plane. RESULTS: BDS scores closely correlated with the number of falls (r = 0.81, p =10(-5)). The more the PV was tilted backward, the greater the BDS scores (r = -0.95, …

Study of postural control and body balance in subjects with Down syndrome

2020

Purpose. Body imbalance and poor postural control have negative impact on gait and may increase the risk of falling in healthy individuals as well as those with Down syndrome (DS). Since people with DS have lower physical levels than people who do not present this condition, the purpose of our research was to compare features of postural control and body balance between subjects affected by DS and a control sample. Methods. Participants enrolled were divided into the following two groups: A DS group (DSG; n = 22; 9 females and 13 males; age range: 16-36 years) and an age-matched control group (CG; n = 25; 11 females and 14 males; age range: 16-36 years). All participants were subjected to t…

Optimization model predictions for postural coordination modes

2003

International audience; This paper examines the ability of the dynamic optimization model to predict changes between in-phase and anti-phase postural modes of coordination and to evaluate influence of two particular environmental and intentional constraints on postural strategy. The task studied was based on an experimental paradigm that consisted in tracking a target motion with the head. An original optimal procedure was developed for cyclic problems to calculate hip and ankle angular trajectories during postural sway with a minimum torque change criterion. Optimization results give a good description of the sudden bifurcation phase between in-phase and anti-phase postural coordination mo…
