Individuality of movements in music--finger and body movements during playing of the flute.

2013

The achievement of mastery in playing a composition by means of a musical instrument typically requires numerous repetitions and corrections according to the keys and notations of the music piece. Nevertheless, differences in the interpretation of the same music piece by highly skilled musicians seem to be recognizable. The present study investigated differences within and between skilled flute players in their finger and body movements playing the same piece several times on the same and on different days. Six semiprofessional and four professional musicians played an excerpt of Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 2 several times on three different days. Finger and body movements were recorded by …

Is Activation of the Back Muscles Impaired by Creep or Muscle Fatigue?

2010

STUDY DESIGN: Intervention study on healthy human subjects. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether reflex activation of the back muscles is influenced by muscle fatigue or soft tissue creep in the spine. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Reflex contraction of the back muscles normally acts to limit spinal flexion, and hence protect the underlying spine from injury. However, repeated flexion allows bending moments on the spine to increase. Impaired reflexes as a result of fatigue or soft tissue creep may be contributing factors. METHODS: A total of 15 healthy volunteers (8 females/7 males aged 23-55 years) underwent 2 interventions, on separate days: (a) sitting flexed for 1 hour to induce creep and (b) …

Segment coupling and coordination variability analyses of the roundhouse kick in taekwondo relative to the initial stance position.

2016

The initial stance position (ISP) has been observed as a factor affecting the execution technique during taekwondo kicks. In the present study, authors aimed to analyse a roundhouse kick to the chest by measuring movement coordination and the variability of coordination and comparing this across the different ISP (0°, 45° and 90°). Eight experienced taekwondo athletes performed consecutive kicking trials in random order from every of the three relative positions. The execution was divided into three phases (stance, first swing and second swing phase). A motion capture system was used to measure athletes' angular displacement of pelvis and thigh. A modified vector coding technique was used t…

Neck Muscle Vibration and Spatial Orientation During Stepping in Place in Humans

2002

Unilateral long-lasting vibration was applied to the sternomastoid muscle to assess the influence of asymmetric neck proprioceptive input on body orientation during stepping-in-place. Blindfolded subjects performed 3 sequences of 3 trials, each lasting 60 s: control, vibration applied during stepping (VDS), and vibration applied before stepping (VBS). VDS caused clear-cut whole body rotation toward the side opposite to vibration. The body rotated around a vertical axis placed at about arm's length from the body. The rotation did not begin immediately on switching on the vibrator. The delay varied from subject to subject from a few seconds to about 10 s. Once initiated, the angular velocity…

Mechanisms of causal interaction between short-term RR interval and systolic arterial pressure oscillations during orthostatic challenge

2013

The transition from the supine to the upright position requires a reorganization of the mechanisms of cardiovascular control that, if not properly accomplished, may lead to neurally mediated syncope. We investigated how the patterns of causality between systolic arterial pressure (SAP) and cardiac RR interval were modified by prolonged head-up tilt using a novel nonlinear approach based on corrected conditional entropy (CCE) compared with the standard approach exploiting the cross-correlation function (CCF). Measures of coupling strength and delay of the causal interactions from SAP to RR and from RR to SAP were obtained in 10 patients with recurrent, neurally mediated syncope (RNMS) and 10…

An ensemble analysis of electromyographic activity during whole body pointing with the use of support vector machines.

2011

Import JabRef | WosArea Life Sciences and Biomedicine - Other Topics; International audience; We explored the use of support vector machines (SVM) in order to analyze the ensemble activities of 24 postural and focal muscles recorded during a whole body pointing task. Because of the large number of variables involved in motor control studies, such multivariate methods have much to offer over the standard univariate techniques that are currently employed in the field to detect modifications. The SVM was used to uncover the principle differences underlying several variations of the task. Five variants of the task were used. An unconstrained reaching, two constrained at the focal level and two …

Investigating centre of mass stabilisation as the goal of posture and movement coordination during human whole body reaching

2000

In the light of experimental results showing significant forward centre of mass (CoM) displacements within the base of support, this study investigated if whole body reaching movements can be executed whilst keeping the CoM fixed in the horizontal axis. Using kinematic simulation techniques, angular configurations were recreated from experimental data imposing two constraints: a constant horizontal position of the CoM and an identical trajectory of the hand to grasp an object. The comparison between recorded and simulated trials showed that stabilisation of the CoM was associated with greater backward hip displacements, which became more marked with increasing object distance. This was in c…

Relationship between isokinetic performance and ballistic movement

1983

The present experiments were carried out to assess the relationship between the mechanical behaviour of the leg extensor muscles in 12 male athletes during activities of a ballistic type and torque production, during: (1) torque production during isokinetic contraction: (2) ballistic type activities (vertical jumps from statis position = SJ, with counter-movement equal CMJ and after a fall from different heights equal DJ) and (3) a new anaerobic test (Bosco 1983a). This consisted of performing continuous jump work for a certain period of time (e.g., 60 s). Both ballistic activities and anaerobic power tests demonstrated the highest relationship with peak torques when this was developed resp…

Comparison of three methods for evaluation of work postures in a truck assembly plant

2017

International audience; This study compared the results of three risk assessment tools (self-reported questionnaire, observational tool, direct measurement method) for the upper limbs and back in a truck assembly plant at two cycle times (11 and 8 min). The weighted Kappa factor showed fair agreement between the observational and direct measurement method for the arm (0.39) and back (0.47). The weighted Kappa factor for these methods was poor for the neck (0) and wrist (0) but the observed proportional agreement (P-o) was 0.78 for the neck and 0.83 for the wrist. The weighted Kappa factor between questionnaire and direct measurement showed poor or slight agreement (0) for different body seg…
