Abstract Recently, the relationship between music and nonmusical cognitive abilities has been highly debated. It has been documented that formal music training would improve verbal, mathematical or visuospatial performance in children. In the experiments described here, we tested if visual perception and imagery abilities were enhanced in adult musicians compared with nonmusicians. In our main experiment, we measured reaction times of subjects who had to detect on which side of a horizontal or a vertical line a target dot was flashed. How fast can we correct a planned movement following an unexpected target jump? Subjects, starting in an upright standing position, were required to point to a target that randomly and unexpectedly jumps forward to a constant spatial location. Rapid motor corrections in the upper and lower limbs, with latency responses of less than 100 ms, were revealed by contrasting electromyographic activities in perturbed and unperturbed trials. The earliest responses were observed primarily in the anterior section of the deltoidus anterior (shoulder) and the tibialis anterior (leg) muscles. Objectives: To conduct a kinematic comparison of occupational posture in orthodontists and dentists in their workplace. Design: Observational study. Insulin-like growth factor 1 and pressure load in hypertensive patients

To verify the effect of a pressure load on the production of Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF1) in essential hypertensives, we studied 15 patients and 8 normotensive controls before and during orthostatism. Upright standing was characterized both in normals and in hypertensives by significant higher rate-pressure product [RPP = systolic blood pressure (mm Hg) x heart rate (beats/min)]. Proportional increases of RPP were significantly related to IGF1 values at the end of orthostatism and to proportional increases of IGF1 in hypertensive group but not in normotensive one. Our results confirm that IGF1 plasma levels in hypertensive patients are related to pressure load.

Acute effects of transient vertical whole-body vibration

The question as to whether shock-type whole-body vibration causes increasingly acute strain was investigated. Random vibrations were superimposed with shocks differing in amplitude and in number per unit of time in a systematic manner. The weighted root mean square (rms) acceleration was kept constant in all over the varied experiments. A total of 17 men were exposed to vibration from an electrohydraulic simulator. Abstract Plasma cAMP levels were measured using a protein- binding radioassay in nine healthy volunteer subjects over a period of 24 h under standardized conditions and also after an hour of orthostatism. No circadian variations of cAMP in plasma were observed. After orthostatism, however, there was a significant rise in cAMP concentrations.

Postural Control Mechanisms in Healthy Adults in Sitting and Standing Positions

This study explored differences in the center of pressure in healthy people in a sitting and standing position and with eyes open and closed. With this purpose, 32 healthy participants (16 men, 16 women; M age = 25.2 yr., SD = 10.0, range = 18–55) were measured with an extensiometric force plate. Using a two–way repeated-measures multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), the root mean square, velocity, range, and sway, in both visual conditions, had higher values in the standing task than in the sitting task.
