Lateralized memory storage and crossed inhibition during odor processing by Limax.
2000
After odor conditioning intact Limax maximus and injecting LY into their haemocoel, labeled groups of neurons are found in either the right or left procerebral lobe but never in both procerebral lobes. This suggests that a competitive interaction occurs between right and left odor processing pathways of which the procerebral lobe is a part. We use the nerve discharge in the external peritentacular nerve evoked by applying a puff of conditioned odor to the nose to document crossed inhibition between left and right odor processing pathways. Responses in the external peritentacular nerve evoked by stimulating one superior nose with a conditioned odor are strongly lateralized as responses occur…
Bioactivity of fractions and constituents of Piper capense fruits towards a broad panel of cancer cells.
2020
Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance Piper capense is a medicinal spice whose fruits are traditionally used as aqueous decoction to heal several ailments such as trypanosomiasis, helminthic infections, and cancer. Aim of the study. (1) To perform phytochemical investigation of the methanol extract of Piper capense; (2) to evaluate the cytotoxicity of botanicals (PCF, fractions PCFa-e), isolated phytochemicals on a broad panel of animal and human cancer cell lines; (3) to evaluate the induction of apoptosis of the most active samples. Material and methods Resazurin reduction assay (RRA) was used to determine the cytotoxicity of the studied samples. Cell cycle distribution (PI staining), a…
Orientational Ordering ofN2OMolecules Adsorbed on Graphite (0001): A Novel Commensurate Pinwheel Structure
2000
The structure and orientational ordering of N2O molecules physisorbed on graphite (0001) is investigated applying x-ray, neutron, and low-energy electron diffraction techniques. Combining the results of the three techniques, we find that N2O forms a highly ordered, hexagonal, commensurate (sqrt[21]xsqrt[21])R10.89 degrees phase. The unit cell contains seven molecules which are arranged in a seven-sublattice pinwheel structure, unexpected for linear molecules on a hexagonal lattice. Potential energy calculations corroborate these results.
The Influence of Sports on Cognitive Task Performance – A Critical Overview
2013
The potential effect of different methods on cognitive performance is of great interest to scientific researchers. In addition to drugs, nutrition and sleeping behavior, extensive research has focused on different kinds of sports and exercise and their potential to enhance cognitive task performance. In this chapter, I will give the reader an overview of studies dealing with athletic activities of healthy people and their effects on cognitive task performance. Furthermore, I present and discuss limitations and problems found in these studies. One problem that I point out that makes the comparison of the study results difficult is the heterogeneous study design regarding mode, duration and i…
Fourier-transform spectroscopy and potential construction of the (2)1Π state in KCs
2015
The paper presents an empirical pointwise potential energy curve (PEC) of the (2)(1)Π state of the KCs molecule constructed by applying the Inverted Perturbation Approach routine. The experimental term values in the energy range E(v', J') ∈ [15 407; 16 579] cm(-1) involved in the fit were based on Fourier-Transform spectroscopy data obtained with 0.01 cm(-1) accuracy from the laser-induced (2)(1)Π → X(1)Σ(+) fluorescence spectra. Buffer gas Ar was used to facilitate the appearance of rotation relaxation lines in the spectra, thus enlarging the (2)(1)Π data set and allowing determination of the Λ-splitting constants. The data set included vibrational v' ∈ [0, 28] and rotational J' ∈ [7, 274]…
Fourier-transform spectroscopy and description of low-lying energy levels in the B(1)(1)Π state of RbCs.
2013
The Fourier transform spectrometer with resolution of 0.03 cm(-1) was applied to disperse the diode laser induced B(1)(1)Π → X(1)Σ(+) fluorescence spectra of the RbCs molecule in a heat pipe. The presence of buffer gas (Ar) produced in the spectra the dense pattern of collision-induced rotation relaxation lines, thus enlarging the B(1)(1)Π data set, allowing to determine the Λ-splitting constants and to reveal numerous local perturbations. In total, 2664 term values for (85)Rb(133)Cs and (87)Rb(133)Cs in the energy range from 13,770 to 15,200 cm(-1) were obtained with accuracy about 0.01 cm(-1). A pointwise potential energy curve (PEC) based on inverted perturbation approach was constructed…
Finite element approximation of vector fields given by curl and divergence
1981
In this paper a finite element approximation scheme for the system curl is considered. The use of pointwise approximation of the boundary condition leads to a nonconforming method. The error estimate is proved and numerically tested.
Potential construction of the B (1) 1 Π state in KCs based on Fourier-Transform spectroscopy data
2015
Abstract The paper presents an empirical pointwise potential energy curve (PEC) of the extensively perturbed B ( 1 ) 1 Π state of the KCs molecule constructed by applying an Inverted Perturbation Approach routine. The experimental term values in the energy range E ( v ′ , J ′ ) ∈ [ 14071 ; 15502 ] cm − 1 involved in the fit were based on Fourier-Transform spectroscopy data obtained with 0.01 cm−1 accuracy from laser-induced B ( 1 ) 1 Π → X 1 Σ + fluorescence spectra in the present work (654 term values) combined with 520 term values from Birzniece et al. (2012) . The data set included vibrational v ′ ∈ [ 0 , 35 ] and rotational J ′ ∈ [ 7 , 233 ] quantum numbers covering about 85% of the pot…
B1(1)Π state of KCs: high-resolution spectroscopy and description of low-lying energy levels.
2012
The diode laser induced B(1)(1)Π → X(1)Σ(+) fluorescence spectra of the KCs molecule were recorded by Fourier-transform spectrometer with resolution of 0.03 cm(-1). Buffer gas Ar was used to facilitate appearance of rotation relaxation lines in the spectra, thus enlarging the B(1)(1)Π dataset, allowing one to determine the Λ-splitting constants and to reveal numerous local perturbations. A dataset was systematically obtained for B(1)(1)Π vibrational levels ν(') ∈ [0; 5] nonuniformly covering rotational levels with J(') ∈ [7; 233]. For ν(') ∈ [0; 3], the less-perturbed data of f-components were included in the fit. A pointwise potential energy curve (PEC) based on the inverted perturbation a…
Differences in Inhibitory Control between Impulsive and Premeditated Aggression in Juvenile Inmates
2017
Inhibitory control dysfunction was considered a universal characteristic of violent offenders. The aim of this study was to examine differences in inhibitory control between two subtypes of violent youth; those displaying predominantly impulsive and those presenting predominantly premeditated aggression (PM). Forty-four juvenile offenders, defined on the basis of the Procedures for the Classification of Aggressive/Violent Acts (Stanford and Barratt, 2001) participated (N = 23: impulsive; N = 21 premeditated). A visual Go/NoGo task was used to compare behavioral responses and event-related potentials (ERPs) between groups. The task contained two letters (W and M), W was the Go stimulus and M…
