Heterogeneous responses of nucleus incertus neurons to corticotrophin-releasing factor and coherent activity with hippocampal theta rhythm in the rat
2013
The nucleus incertus (NI) of the rat hindbrain is a putative node in the ascending control of the septohippocampal system and hippocampal theta rhythm and is stress and arousal responsive. NI contains GABA neurons that express multiple neuropeptides, including relaxin-3 (RLN3) and neuropeptide receptors, including corticotrophin-releasing factor receptor-1 (CRF-R1), but the precise anatomical and physiological characteristics of NI neurons are unclear. Therefore, we examined the firing properties of NI neurons and their responses to CRF, the correlation of these responses with occurrence of relaxin-3, and NI neuron morphology in the rat. Most NI neurons excited by intracerebroventricular CR…
Somatostatin and Somatostatin Receptors: From Signaling to Clinical Applications in Neuroendocrine Neoplasms
2021
Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are heterogeneous neoplasms which arise from neuroendocrine cells that are distributed widely throughout the body. Although heterogenous, many of them share their ability to overexpress somatostatin receptors (SSTR) on their cell surface. Due to this, SSTR and somatostatin have been a large subject of interest in the discovery of potential biomarkers and treatment options for the disease. The aim of this review is to describe the molecular characteristics of somatostatin and somatostatin receptors and its application in diagnosis and therapy on patients with NENs as well as the use in the near future of somatostatin antagonists.
The wild boar (Sus scrofa, Linnaeus, 1758) as an important reservoir host for Alaria alata in the Baltic region and potential risk of infection in hu…
2020
Abstract Alaria alata trematode is widely distributed throughout Europe and has a complex life cycle in which wild boar serve as a reservoir host. The primary aims of the present study are to establish the occurrence of A. alata mesocercariae in naturally infected wild boar in Latvia and to assess the risk for humans to acquire A. alata infection via consumption of wild boar meat. By summarizing long-term data using the Trichinella inspection method from 2014 to 2019, the overall A. alata prevalence was 8.3%, of which significantly higher A. alata prevalence was observed during the summer seasons. Additionally, 43.9% (n = 485) of wild boar were found to be infected with A. alata using Alari…
Peripheral motor action of glucagon-like peptide-1 through enteric neuronal receptors
2010
Background Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a proglucagon-derived peptide expressed in the enteroendocrine-L cells of small and large intestine and released in response to meal ingestion. Glucagon-like peptide-1 exerts inhibitory effects on gastrointestinal motility through vagal afferents and central nervous mechanisms; however, no data is available about a direct influence on the gastrointestinal wall. Our aim was to investigate the effects of GLP-1 on the spontaneous and evoked mechanical activity of mouse duodenum and colon and to identify the presence and distribution of GLP-1 receptors (GLP-1R) in the muscle coat. Methods Organ bath recording technique and immunohistochemistry wer…
GLP-2 receptor expression in excitatory and inhibitory enteric neurons and its role in mouse duodenum contractility
2011
Background Glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2), a nutrient-responsive hormone, exerts various actions in the gastrointestinal tract that are mediated by a G-protein coupled receptor called GLP-2R. A little information is available on GLP-2R expression in enteric neurons and nothing on the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC). Methods We investigated presence and distribution of the GLP-2R in the mouse duodenum by immunohistochemistry and the potential motor effects of GLP-2 on the spontaneous and neurally evoked mechanical activity. Key Results The GLP-2R was expressed by the myenteric and submucosal neurons. Labelling was also present in nerve varicosities within the circular muscular layer an…
'TRPing' synaptic ribbon function in the rat pineal gland: neuroendocrine regulation involves the capsaicin receptor TRPV1.
2009
Synaptic ribbons (SRs) are presynaptic structures thought to regulate and facilitate multivesicular release. In the pineal gland, they display a circadian rhythm with higher levels at night paralleling melatonin synthesis. To gain more insight into the processes involved and the possible functions of these structures, a series of experiments were conducted in rodents. We studied the regional distribution of a molecular marker of pineal SRs, the kinesin motor KIF3A in the gland. Respective immunoreactivity was abundant in central regions of the gland where sympathetic fibers were less dense, and vice versa, revealing that intercellular communication between adjacent pinealocytes is enhanced …
In vitro effects of estradiol, testosterone, and progesterone on 5-methoxyindole content, cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate synthesis, and norepin…
1986
To examine the effects of estradiol, testosterone, or progesterone on cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (AMP) accumulation, 5-methoxyindole levels, and norepinephrine (NE) release by the female guinea pig pineal complex, samples of the deep, intermediate, or superficial portions of the complex were incubated in vitro with varied concentrations of either hormone. Exposure for 10 minutes to physiological amounts of estradiol (10 nM) or to 100 microM NE increased significantly cyclic AMP levels to the same extent in the three pineal regions. A maximal effect on cyclic AMP accumulation was observed at 100-nM concentrations of estradiol, with a tendency to return to basal levels at 1-10 micro…
Relaxation induced by N-terminal fragments of chromogranin A in mouse gastric preparations.
2007
Abstract A definitive role for chromogranin A (CGA)-derived fragments in the control of the gastrointestinal smooth muscle contractility has not been yet established. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate, in vitro , the effects of the recombinant vasostatin 1–78 (VS-1), CGA 7–57 and CGA 47–66 on the mouse gastric mechanical activity, recording the changes of intraluminal pressure. VS-1, CGA 7–57 and CGA 47–66 produced concentration-dependent relaxations. Mouse anti-vasostatin-1 monoclonal antibody 5A8, recognising the region 53–57, abolished the relaxation induced by VS-1, indicating the specificity of the effect. The relaxation was significantly reduced by tetrodotoxin (TTX), b…
Monitoring heart rate derived indices and DC-potential of the brain over a 12-week endurance training period in recreational runners
2015
Purpose: The present study examined the agreement between HR-derived indices obtained over different recording situations (morning upon waking, in the lab, and during nocturnal measurements). Changes in DC-potential were examined following a high-intensity training (HIT) week by comparing them to a control week. Moreover, the relationship between adaptation to endurance training and the changes of morning HR-derived indices were examined. Methods: Eighteen subjects performed all testing and measurements (10 men, age 36.4 ± 6.1 yr; height 178.3 ± 5.2 cm; weight 77.8 ± 6.2 kg; VO2max 55.7 ± 6.0 ml/kg/min; 8 women, age 34.1 ± 7.5 yr; height 166.8 ± 6.7 cm; weight 61.7 ± 7.5 kg; VO2max 47.1 ± 4…

2017
